  • They're NOT Teaching Me This In School!-.-

  • dont do the dolly zoom if you are trying to make a serious film or short film...too many student films do this and it's just crap it's a cool effect but just dont do it

  • @GOrockets11

I agree with you to some point. But there are a lot of talented students who can pull it off quite nicely. All the kids on here being like OMG they don't teach me this. Thats because your teacher probably knows that your incapable of understanding its true effect, and if they were to teach it to you, you would just abuse the shit out of it.

  • @ShelterDogs You've missed the point entirely. My comment was not about using one camera angle or shot length over another, but rather the concept that camera placement should be motivated by the content or story-not production value.

  • "Using different angles will make your video more dynamic and dramatic"

Not necessarily, some of the most dramatic shots in cinema are very long. This video gives the impression that shooting with lots of camera angles will make a project "better" in some way. Content should guide camera placement.

  • @SalilSundresh Your last five words are what everyone should remember. Upvoted!

  • @SalilSundresh Okay. So don't use different angles then. Make every shot long and have it dynamic and dramatic that way. Some of you listen to this stuff and take it so literally. I'm sure the guy in the video already knows that about long shots. Maybe he shouldn't have suggested it at all?

  • The zolly is also in the lord of the rings twice

  • @Talliehoe5 yep isn't the lord of the rings the best movie!!!

  • Does anyone know a great way to add special effectS?

  • @ohdudethatsfunny If your to lazy to google it, you will be way to lazy to learn it

  • It was cool until the music in the end

  • I remember I first saw that Zolly zoom effect in 'Jaws' the movie, when Rob Schneider is sitting on the beach and he see's the comotion in the water. It's also in Michael Jacksons video 'Thriller' just when he starts to dance with the zombies on the street, - they're 2 examples that stick in my mind.

  • @genfx303 Maybe you mean Roy Scheider =)

  • @riffbaama - Yeah, that's the guy. I always mix his name up with other actors, rod steiger, rob schneider, roy scheider.... and err... bob shnizzle :-) - (I made that last one up just now... ;-)

  • im doing this

  • Th dolly shot is nice. I been trying to figure out how to get more angles to get a better look in my videos.

  • It's more commonly known as the 'trombone shot'. I've also seen it referred to as 'shallow focus' or 'dolly zoom'.

  • Thank you =) Now I can tell my camera man what I want him to do since he hasn't taken the class I have.

  • dam i knew the zolly effect but the climbing just fooled me there..haha

  • very helpful !

  • its not called "Zolly" its called Vertigo because it was invented there thats why its not called Zolly.. its called "Vertigo" i mean thats what SAE teached me

  • @ZottellTV it has a lot of names, really i can think of 5 names for it

  • if you like to see the cinema history watch *BIRTH OF CINEMA* in youtube and enjoy.

  • dude a million thumbs up for this video all of you who voted thumbs down are dumb dumbs

  • Never heard the term "zolly" before. The effect you're referring to is clearly a "dolly zoom".

  • @ziryab92 actually you can't even say it's a dolly zoom, it had many names before this term and many people call it differently so stop sounding like a Know it all.

  • @shaunberry1982 First of all, it wasn't my intention to sound "like a Know i all". With that said, a "dolly zoom" is probably the most common term for describing this kind of in-camera effect. I certainty remember Barry Sonnenfeld describing it as "dolly zoom", as he used the effect on "Get Shorty". I remember hearing it from Goodfellas cinematographer Michael Ballhaus, as well.

  • At my film school the teachers would call it " the Trombone Effect" I guess they were wrong too.

  • T. s. , you are the best...!!

  • This is also known as the dolly zoom effect

  • This video was SOOOOOOOOOOOOO useful thanks a bunch!!!

  • Videomaker where did you get all this great knowledge from??? They aren't teaching me this in school...

  • @amante7777 Experiment. They don't teach creativity in schools.

  • @amante7777 me tooo

  • thank you guys. i hve seen the dolly effect and didnt kno what it was called or how it worked

  • the zolly effect?

  • hi, i like your work so much man. am gona be shorting a movie in a frica and am wondering wether you might want to be part of it. this is a talent you have ther if you don't know it yet and you need to benefit from it. Please reply and this might be your beginning to reall business.

  • that guy has the same last name of my friend, lol

  • thank you for all your vids they have been very helpful but theres just 1 problem... i dont have a video camera/camcorder could you recomend a very good quality video camera that will produce exception videos that records footage on an sd card i would like one of those cameras that have the external mic and the handle that you can sit on your shoulder but my price range is $500-$1100 what would you reccomend?

    yours greatfully: fadeddreemz

  • Any Canon Vixia series camera. I would recommend the HV40.

  • @fadeddreemz : Allthough I'm not the one listening to the name videomaker, if I may respond.

If you don't have experience with a camcorder at all I'd stay away from shoulder-mounted/ENG-style camcorders.

You won't get a shoulder-mounted camcorder between 500 and 1100 dollars (maybe secondhand though, pay attention to operation hours!) and certainly not one that records on solid state media.

I'd say look for a second hand JVC GY-DV500, 5000 or 5001 on ebay (last one does proper 16:9)

  • @fadeddreemz : If you still want to persue your dream of buying a shoulder-mounted camcorder that is offcourse.

Wrist-mounted camcorders are probably in the price range you suggested, allthough not all have the ability to connect extra microphones.

Even though it's been 2 years since you posted your reply to this video it can help to think over what you want to film, because you need different camera's for different needs.

  • Really useful stuff! Thanks.

  • funny i watch this now cuz i just watched goodfellas yesterday. awsome movie

  • Although I find it very difficult when using a Low-Lens, where you rely on a motor to control your zoom as apposed to a hand movement as you would have with a Reflex.

What I get at is the Consumer cameras that use a variable switch to control the speed might have steps which make it difficult to capture these sort of images. Can be done but is rather much a pain in the arse, the out come can be very nice tho.

  • awesome on the zolly tip!

  • at 2:24 the hair is too fake :/

I mean it's hanging down to the ground not down the back

  • Good stuff

  • I've been trying to figure out that zolly shot thing. My friends said that all it requires is zooming in. I just knew that it was more than just that.

  • I didn't know what it was called and was told it's a special lense, i knew that wasn't right either! haha

  • Thanks! I knew most of the stuff but it adds onto it seeing it from different points of view and more.

  • relly nice! thanx

  • third

    just kidding

there are some good angels in here. The action movie was a good example

  • Awesome video! Thank you for teaching me that Zolly effect. I knew it already before but this made it more like "realistic" to me.

  • good zolly scene in jaws too
