  • this is the best!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • The absular BEST!

  • Yep, it's Merle alright. I have the original album (vinyl) and it says "Special ghost appearance by Merle Haggard." It also says "I would like to thank Emmylou Harris and Merle haggard for helping make a dream come true. Because this was the last album recorded in Columbia Studio B, I would like to dedicate it to all the great artists, musicians, producers and engineers, past and present - especially Lou Bradley and Charlie Bradley who made Studio B a part of Country Music history."

  • John Anderson has a great voice, and this is a great song. 'Nuff said.

  • This is weird, my Grandmother introduced me to John, because I look just like him in this picture. We look alike, both play guitar and well gosh he's talented. Only difference is I play Thrash Metal so.

  • this is a shitty version of a good song.

  • @godfugitive well, i happen to think that John has a good voice and does a good job, i'm grateful, i'm also grateful that i don't have to deal with your negative ass on a personal basis. Now, that really would be shitty!

  • @mccurryburg sorry you have no taste - you were born that way, you can't help it.

  • THIS IS MY FAV JOHN ANDERSON SONG - HE JUST MAKES IT WITH HIS WAILING - TAILOR MADE FOR HIM!

  • John is and Lefty was great singers who have a way of singing a song and make you feel it in your soul

  • John has the voice for a sad song and for a happy song, not all singers can do both equally as well as Lefty and John,

  • Wonder how the Hag is doing these days. I'm too young to see my heroes fade. Damn time!!!

  • John has that ability to make great songs even greater. He has the most unique (natural) style of any country male artist ever. And there are some REAL good ones as you all know. But John's country comes from the heart.

  • GOOD SONG WHO EVER SING IT

  • Been listening to John since the 70's and still get just as much enjoyment with his music now as I did then.

  • Merle is on of my favorites, so I had to mention him. By the way, his (Merle's) newest album is awesome!

  • no one ever mentions that Merle sings in this how awesome is that

  • @ANNEAVES No one really needs to mention it. It's only people like us who would appreciate it anyhow. It's kind of like the old saying...If I have to explain it, you wouldn't understand! To most Merle fans, it is very obvious it's "the Hag" singing that part in this song!

  • @tjdinfl It isnt Hag singing, it is Anderson doing an imitation. You can find the video on one of John Anderson's video releases where he does it live and talks about it.

  • @Rcksaltnnails You are wrong, friend; it is the one and only Merle Ronald Haggard doing the part in this song. I appreciate your enthusiasm though.

  • @tjdinfl Really? I have the double CD in front of me right now. None of the songs on this double CD are old recordings. They are rerecordings done by John Anderson and RIGHT ON THE CREDITS FOR THIS SONG it credits a "ghost" singing of Merle Haggard BY JOHN ANDERSON! TY for YOUR enthusiasm.

  • @ANNEAVES if somebody wouldn't recognize Merle singin in here, that person probably wouldn't have enough good taste anyway to look up a John ANderson video...and who doesn't know that or hears that, well does it make sense to explain something ;-)

  • he's the greatest wish he would come to billings

  • john anderson has always and will forever be the best county artist the world will ever see in my opinion. i sure would like to find some of his older music, like haunted house, mountain high valley low, the price of a thin silver dime...

  • John Anderson TRULY is AWESOME! I would like to see him do a re-record of the OLDER songs! Like.....Eye of a hurricane, and red Georgia clay, and Lonely is another state.

  • Is Josh Turner's-"Long Black Train" based from this song?

    They sound similar.

  • john is truly the most under estimated country artist that has ever come through. he has a voice that has yet to be repeated and a style that you wont see in todays music world.

  • @dbletrble1971

I have to agree. I've been listening to John David Anderson for years now and I can never get enough of his music.

  • I love you john!

  • Truly a fantastic song.. many artists have sung this song, but John Andersons is by far my favorite. Masterful songwriting. Anderson puts his magic with it to make it truly an art.

  • Another great version ..

.. of a truly great song.

  • Can it get any better than The Hag and JA together - man alive- I know all the words to every thing BOTH of them ever sang- OMG just gives me the shivers to hear these voices- man alive-

  • JOHN ANDERSON IS ONE OF THE GREATEST COUNTRY SINGERS THERE WILL EVER BE.

  • @dianaw1000 Johnny Cash pisses on this version. This sounds like Christmas cake in comparison, full of sugar.

  • @dianaw1000 You got that right my friend. Fo' Sho'!

  • Many have tried but this the best cover of a great Lefty song.

  • check out my version guys cheers

  • I love this man's voice- I know every word to every song- he is so true to his songs-

  • I met John in a dingy bar in a no name town. I was 19yrs old. No REAL country singer has the a more original voice in country music than John. Im 50 now and I still have my autograped (albums). Not a week goes by that I dont still want to hear that TWANG. These new country singers are bland and all sound the same.

  • Great version!

  • Just bought the CD "The List" from Rosanne Cash!!! Great version of the song on that!!!

  • best version yet

  • One of my favorite versions of this song, especially with the Hag helping

  • This version is also very good, thank you!

  • Anything with the Hag in it is #1 to me.

  • Lefty is the BEST

  • lefty is still the best, but i like this version also, john andersons voice fits the song well

  • love this man!

  • starr522 you are right.I was born to this music.everybody has their own voice and version. This is good and I like it.

  • great version of this song. he is a good singer

  • This ain't about who sounds best! Listen to the song, get a grip on the meaning. Look up the song and all the singers, pick your favorite, and enjoy.

  • I kindly disagree. The Johnny Cash version should be the best. His voice brought a great somber tone to the song. John Anderson's voice is almost to high pitched and joyful for this song.

  • Daryle Singletary, listen to his version and I think everyone would agree that his is the best. That whole CD he did years ago is amazing.

  • Great version!

  • Damn that was one good looking cowboy!

  • oh man thanks for posting, had this cassette years ago

  • random pic of merle

  • i love this version

  • Listen to Mick Jagger and the Chieftains version and Bobby Bare's

All awesome - but Mick's will give you cold chills

Also Hank Williams III did a chilling version on the Three Hanks CD

  • awesome song

  • i prefer the country gentlemen's version. it's much slower and more haunting. their harmonies are amazing. but i do lover some merle and john.

  • @maggiebowman

Which version by them Maggie? The early one with John Duffy on those high lead vocals, or the latter one with Charlie singing lead? Either is amazing and probably the best version of this song I ever heard.

  • This is pure country-love it.......

  • john still did great on this song . just got his own touch to it

  • DAVID ALLEN COES IS BEST

  • Johnny Cash's is the second, this is the 3rd

  • @iamtyler1000 who's the first?

  • David Allan Coe's

  • @lilrayone i agree 100% but i cant find that version online anywhere

  • May I say that I think all of the versions are great. You know why? Because it s a great, well written, soulful song. Without a great song, the artist hasn t got a chance.

  • i used to have a version of this song that was a duet with a man and a woman and it was the best i'd ever heard but don't remember who done it but this version is pretty good

  • merle nails the first chorus

  • i think this is the best version of this song

  • johnny cash is second

  • badass tune!

  • This is the best version of this song, allthough Johnny's version is good as well.
