Yep, it's Merle alright. I have the original album (vinyl) and it says "Special ghost appearance by Merle Haggard." It also says "I would like to thank Emmylou Harris and Merle haggard for helping make a dream come true. Because this was the last album recorded in Columbia Studio B, I would like to dedicate it to all the great artists, musicians, producers and engineers, past and present - especially Lou Bradley and Charlie Bradley who made Studio B a part of Country Music history."
This is weird, my Grandmother introduced me to John, because I look just like him in this picture. We look alike, both play guitar and well gosh he's talented. Only difference is I play Thrash Metal so.
@godfugitive well, i happen to think that John has a good voice and does a good job, i'm grateful, i'm also grateful that i don't have to deal with your negative ass on a personal basis. Now, that really would be shitty!
John has that ability to make great songs even greater. He has the most unique (natural) style of any country male artist ever. And there are some REAL good ones as you all know. But John's country comes from the heart.
@ANNEAVES No one really needs to mention it. It's only people like us who would appreciate it anyhow. It's kind of like the old saying...If I have to explain it, you wouldn't understand! To most Merle fans, it is very obvious it's "the Hag" singing that part in this song!
@tjdinfl It isnt Hag singing, it is Anderson doing an imitation. You can find the video on one of John Anderson's video releases where he does it live and talks about it.
@tjdinfl Really? I have the double CD in front of me right now. None of the songs on this double CD are old recordings. They are rerecordings done by John Anderson and RIGHT ON THE CREDITS FOR THIS SONG it credits a "ghost" singing of Merle Haggard BY JOHN ANDERSON! TY for YOUR enthusiasm.
@Rcksaltnnails We aren't talking about the double CD you have in front of you; we are talking about the version featured in this video (from WILD and BLUE). In this original from 1982, it was Merle Haggard who did the part. I have known this since its inception in 1982. You can see a review of this album if you google "John Anderson, Wild and Blue". Towards the bottom of the 1st pg, you can see a review of the album at ultimatewang(dot)com.
@ANNEAVES if somebody wouldn't recognize Merle singin in here, that person probably wouldn't have enough good taste anyway to look up a John ANderson video...and who doesn't know that or hears that, well does it make sense to explain something ;-)
john anderson has always and will forever be the best county artist the world will ever see in my opinion. i sure would like to find some of his older music, like haunted house, mountain high valley low, the price of a thin silver dime...
John Anderson TRULY is AWESOME! I would like to see him do a re-record of the OLDER songs! Like.....Eye of a hurricane, and red Georgia clay, and Lonely is another state.
john is truly the most under estimated country artist that has ever come through. he has a voice that has yet to be repeated and a style that you wont see in todays music world.
Truly a fantastic song.. many artists have sung this song, but John Andersons is by far my favorite. Masterful songwriting. Anderson puts his magic with it to make it truly an art.
Can it get any better than The Hag and JA together - man alive- I know all the words to every thing BOTH of them ever sang- OMG just gives me the shivers to hear these voices- man alive-
I met John in a dingy bar in a no name town. I was 19yrs old. No REAL country singer has the a more original voice in country music than John. Im 50 now and I still have my autograped (albums). Not a week goes by that I dont still want to hear that TWANG. These new country singers are bland and all sound the same.
I kindly disagree. The Johnny Cash version should be the best. His voice brought a great somber tone to the song. John Anderson's voice is almost to high pitched and joyful for this song.
Which version by them Maggie? The early one with John Duffy on those high lead vocals, or the latter one with Charlie singing lead? Either is amazing and probably the best version of this song I ever heard.
May I say that I think all of the versions are great. You know why? Because it s a great, well written, soulful song. Without a great song, the artist hasn t got a chance.
i used to have a version of this song that was a duet with a man and a woman and it was the best i'd ever heard but don't remember who done it but this version is pretty good
this is the best!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

John is and Lefty was great singers who have a way of singing a song and make you feel it in your soul

John has the voice for a sad song and for a happy song, not all singers can do both equally as well as Lefty and John,
