Oh, lastly... GM, Ford + Chrysler offered a bazillion options. Offered, mind you. But, their cars tended to come with virtually nothing extra. Often, floormats, trim, gauges and an AM radio optional. And not just on a Chevette. That's why Honda boasted that the Civic had standard mats, cloth seats + a radio. T'was a BIG deal indeed!
i still think all you make is economy cars ,,and the luxurious 810?..really?..you cant be for real..i am sure alot of caddy and lincoln buyers then hurried to the datsun dealership to trade in the big cars for this thing...everything he talked about here like it is something has been on american cars for 20 years before this came out ,,and some american cars had fuel injection back in the 50's ...those early 70's datsuns and toyotas were pretty bad actually
Um... they *are* serious. With reason. The 810 became the Maxima. That's a nice car, and provided Buick-level appointments and equipment. Not fit for an executive, but certainly appealing to a practical salaried professional who was worried about gas crises and needed to parallel park.
Trade in? Yeah. You're forgetting what American cars were at the time. Citation. Volare. Versailles. Cimmaron. Chevette. Escort. Corinthian leather. Pushrod motors. Baroque horrors. Veneer luxury.
@Manimal347 in no way shape or form is this thing anywere near buick status in the 70's ..so datsun add's a few novelty's to a cheap econo car of the 70's and all of a sudden it becomes a legendary car in the middle class luxury car nitch?..no way ..this is just a cheap econo car and no bigger then a maverick at the time..they did not mention a/c so i wonder if it ever came with a/c and if it did it probably killed the motor to run a/c
Buick-status? Hmm... dunno. Most the Cressidas I've seen are driven by grizzled old folks. Read, Buick and Lincoln buyers. The 810/Maxima competed with the Cressida at the time. GM heavily downsized their cars around the advent of Japanese near-luxury exports, and some people defected.
@Manimal347 gm down sized in 77 and 78 ..there is no way this crappy datsun for 1978 is in the same league
as a buick pontiac or olds..and this will aslo include mercury ..i dont care what this car is compared to ..it was stated as a luxury car..and i pissed myself laffing at that ...a dash full of idiot lites and a remote trunk release and all of a sudden its in the same field as actual luxury cars ???..no way in hell .i guess you never rode in a 78 lincoln town car
i owned an 82 datsun 810 maxima and it had plenty of luxury. i bought it in 2001 and it still drives today w/ 351k on the clock and origonal motor and trans. (low maintenance) i can definetely tell you its a comfortable car because i spend 4 hours behind the wheel every day doing lots of interstate driving. unlike your precious 78 towncar, the 810 cruises down the highway beautifully at 85mph with plenty of passing power. btw, the straight 6 in that car is silky smooth.
@cheffington999 i'm sorry to hear you own a 82 datson ..[unlike my 78 towncar?]..there is no way a 82 datson will out cruise a 70's era lincoln or caddy or a big chrysler of the day ...no way ..imagine sitting on the most comfortable couch you ever sat on then enclosing that in a big car..thats a luxury car of the 70's ..no econo car form datson, or toyota will ever compare to that of this era ...a 82 datson is just a glorified , inclosed golf cart of the day
@390merc65 I do agree with you about old jap cars being golfcarts, but this isnt (it weighs 3400 lbs)You would be surprised how well it cruises. It has an interior noise dba of 67 at 60mph. it tacks around 1900 @ 60mph. it has the smoothest inline6 engine and is one of the few japanese cars with rear drive. and unlike american cruisers that were out of steam @ 75, the datsun maxima can top out @115. with this car, you just hang the needle at 80, put it in cruise and make miles!
@cheffington999 67 dec was when it was new,but that was 30 years ago ..and there isnt to many rear wheel drive jap cars around today ..american cars out by 75?..i can tell by what you say you have never owned , or road in a older full size american luxury car,,the needle might stop at 75, but believe me..they go way past that with 6 full size adults and a trunk full of luggage and the a/c on all at the same time without breaking a sweat
@390merc65 75 is an exaggeration, but once your doing 70, there isnt much passing power. i have owned plenty of full sized american cars (ford ltd, olds 88). they got 12 mpg and the wheel vibrated @ 70!! also, my commute is 160 miles there and back and both the ltd and 88 broke down too often and that was when they were only about 10 years old. a luxury car isnt very luxurious when it breaks down often. who cares that a full sized car seats six!! when i commute i drive with me, myself, and i!!
@cheffington999 something must be wrong if you run out of power at 70..the 70's cars are no power house's but they do ok ..and 12 mpg is bad..a lincoln will do 18 ..i have owned a 69 merc with a 390 it will do 18..also a 71 marquis brougham 429 also did 18 .a 65 merc montclair 390 17.1/2 my 90 grand marquis will do 26.5 .my 77 f150 with a watered down 351 4wd will do 13 .and all had real good luck with all of them ..why didnt i ever brake down ??..but todays gas sucks big time
@cheffington999 the datson might be better then the other imports of the day ,,but no way can they out ride a big american ride as a lincoln, caddy or chrysler of the 70's ..
@Manimal347 sorry if you cant handle parking a car and not use parking assist ..see..back then ..ppl actually knew how to drive a large rear wheel drive american car.,,we didnt need parking assist ..the only assist back then was power brakes and steering ,and navigation came in the form of a map
No, dude, just no. Perhaps you live in a small community, or a car-friendly one, but I grew up near a big city. A Tercel made great sense for somebody who needed to park the thing on the street. On another note, 70's Japanese Buicks? Yeah, Cressida. It's almost as big as GM faux-lux of the mid 80's, plus so much tech. Yes, 4-speed auto, fuel injection, and the Supra motor! Oh, it could even handle, too. '82 Rabbit friend is mulling over buying the '79 he just saw.
@Manimal347 i am guessing you are brought up in a household of imports ,,and missed out on some good cars from the 60's and 70's..and you cant be serious about talking of some of these cars ,,some are out of production for over 30 years ..if pushrod engines are so bad.explain to me how ford made a 400 hp motor back in the 50's..they were the first to do that..name me a few toyota's or honda's or nissans that are stock that make 400 hp or more.???.oh.the escort is in production for 30 years now
There were great US cars in the 60's. We were world standard with our Lincolns and Cadillacs. Then, you must know what happened. I've actually ridden in some 70's cars, US + import, but I can merely cite experience from elders. The shudders at the word "citation." My parents 80,00 miles Chevette with myriad repairs. Their 110,000 mile Sunbird. My friends '82 Rabbit and '74 BMW 2002 that are a blast to be in. Oh, and my Granpa bought US last with Volare. Never started in rain. Ever!
@Manimal347 speaking of bmw..my buddys 82 was an expensive piece of unreliable shit to fix all the time back in the late 90's..alternator's, clutch , exhaust , ..the list goe's on and on .and thats a car that was about 10 years old at the time..i have a feeling you get your info only from other ppl ....anything you find to bitch about on american cars..i know i can also find something to bitch about as well .just cuzz it might be foreign made doesnt mean they are all built by god himself
@Manimal347 and speaking of bmw..why is it that the mustang outruns the bmw 5 serie's i think it is..pollutes less..gets better mpg's , faster in the 1/4 will out stop it ..oh..and the bmw is..are you ready for this..$25,000 more..you pay more for the over rated., over priced bmw and you get smoked by some kid in a new stang ..i guess if you buy a bmw .you at least have the prestige of bragging rights that well..you bought a bmw at least ..
Respond to this video... Well, yes, 390. I'm discussing Datsun-era cars. America's nadir. We make good cars now, but not then. As for pushrods? Heavy motor = lower fuel economy plus low revs. Older design. Also, gross vs. SAE. Same pushrods hit nadir w/ 4.3L 85HP Buick motor in 80's. Horsepower in the late 70's? Hah! Even the Corvette was emasculated. Also, Jap. automakers have gentlemen's agreement not to crack 300hp to avoid 70's pony car HP wars. Escort? I mean US Escort, '81-90!
Did you know the 810 is as big as a late 70s chevrolet Nova, my friend pulled his up to one and they where allmost the same size Nova is slighty bigger.
They probably spent more on the last two seconds of state of the art computer animation than they did in the whole rest of the commercial. I was looking for that piece of animation for about four years.
I actually saw a Datsun 810 wagon (around a 1979-80) just a couple weeks ago and it appeared to be well maintained, this was located in SE Washington State
@jakesaintsrow123 They ruined the 1979 model. It turned into a bloated Luxury two door and nothing sporty about it. I am not a troll. I only speak the truth.
@TheLizardKing1967 I definitely agree that the 1977-78 models were better looking than the 1979-80 models but I still thought the original 810's were one of the nicest looking Japanese cars of the era, did they compete with the Mercury, Buick and Oldsmobile compacts of the era?

@jakesaintsrow123 We sold the 810 for the same price we'd paid for it, 900 dollar. I got a gutless 1982 200SX hatchback. Nice and clean, handled well enough. That was my last car, as I left the country after that.
Oh Yeah! Thanks for sharing Man ! :D ....I had an 81 Tercel ! Loved it...I have always Loved these Older datsuns...Toyota's...All Older Jap cars! I still have my 1978 Plymouth Horizon! @jakesaintsrow123 I didn't measure, but although the 200SX was a standard and the 810 auto, the 810 felt faster. The 810 was kind of old and ratty by that point, the 200SX was much nicer looking and feeling cause it was newer and had been cared for.
When I was a kid my folks drove an 810. Bulletproof imo. No powersteering though :-)

@jakesaintsrow123 I didn't measure, but although the 200SX was a standard and the 810 auto, the 810 felt faster. The 810 was kind of old and ratty by that point, the 200SX was much nicer looking and feeling cause it was newer and had been cared for.
