Is it possible for someone whose not hard of hearing to learn how to sign like someone whose naturally hard of hearing or deaf? Or is it just like any other second language; you will never become as good as you are with your natural language?
@TheMadzymoo depends how dedicated to it you are and how often it's used. ASL has it's own grammar structure, syntax, idioms, etc etc. I've seen people who become deaf at a relatively young age such as 18 or 20 learn it then and become quite fluent signers. But these people have a big motivator to learn and use it. If you've ever seen any CODA's, they sign just like deaf people usually. It's all how much you put into it and how much you involve yourself.
michael moores video was about insurance companies denying care. She was just one story and its great to hear that she is thriving with her CI.
I am an asl major right now and I understand that one of the options was looking into interacting with the deaf community but its the same as deaf parents wanting a deaf child because they share that bond of deafness and ASL. its the same for hearing parents, sharing a common bond. everyone is different. CI was right for her. Not everyone
Yes i agree i think you should at least talk to others with the C.I. so then ud have an option of wat it could do an cant do because sometimes C.Is dont really work that well and you could possibly die if surgery goes wrong i can only hear from my left ear i cant use hearing aid so they suggested C.I btu i say no because id lose rest my hearing i lvoe me jus way i am no C.I or hearing aid can fix it
FYI... to this guy and whom ever else reads this post . Annette is my little sister and has made and continues to make great progress with speech thanks to her Cochlear implants . Tony
Maybe I misunderstand. I apologize for my ignorance but, your view is the SHOULD NOT get the implant, or she should be introduced to the deaf community AND get the implants?
There have transcript on right side of video clip that you can click then read it. By the way, Important for Deaf Community educate to a parents with deaf child as anyone can be knowledge by how much benefit to be part of deaf community while have a implants or not!
His hypocrisy! Always saying how ignorant and "unenlightened" everyone else is...he just ignorantly charges in and "fixes" things for people without a deeper knowledge or an attempt to understand a different community and bigger picture. And he'll prob'ly never know it.
When I was a small child, my family doctor recommended my parents to send me to oral residential schools away from my great friends. That doctor was only pediatrist. I think there should be law forbidden them to talk about anything other than their work. They're too arogant thinking they know everything, but in truth they're idiot.
I like what Michael Moore does because he tries to tell people what problems we have here in US. I think he doesn't understand that what he sees is a "fix" for a problem (getting an implant) is NOT the only choice and that hearing families with a Deaf child need to know all the information and not just listen to the doctors. It is wrong that doctors are on a pedastal and people listen to them like they know everything. I think the focus of M.M. movie is good: insurance for all
I, myself never like Michael Moore, His attitude is suck. He maybe have good point but not need to insult America people. He just want attention himself. I feel like I want spill my drink on his trouser. Never like him.
Amen! It's one thing to know there are problems...all cultures and countries have them. It's another thing to grab attention by, essentially, loud name-calling. Change the world thru positive work!

I think Michael Moore is... uh, it's about a word:
having an attention about the medicine, not only about
deaf community. I am sure he not thinking about deaf
community, I don't know if I am not known well
about him. But, it's very interesting. Thank you
for sharing about CI.
