@badmax func_areaportalwindow is a brush entity available in all Source games. It creates an areaportal that automatically closes as the camera moves away, fading a second, opaque brush in to fill the gap.
@cmbasnett please make tutorials about "areaportalwindow" because i heared its diffrent than "areaportal" but if its the same and i dont have to mess with it functions let me know. thx alot
what if my map has a house front of it is the door which no one can go out and huge glass window, and used "areaportalwindow" with them and on the top of the house (roof) there is a huge glass window also used with it "areaportalwindow" and im sure that the house is completely sealed with no leaks..do you think it will work properly?? or the roof must be non glass material?
@AAAZ2A I think I got it at a place called FPS Banana, but if I remember it has changed its name to Games Banana or something along those lines. It has loads of skins you can download.
Hi. Thanks for the tutorial, that was really helpful. I just have one question- What is the difference between the hint brush and the area portal brush? They both control what is rendered beyond the players point of view. Also, under what circumstances should I use hint over area portal/area portal over hint? Just a little confused since there are to entities which do the same thing.
@nsahler That depends, really. If there is a lot of stuff within those houses, then you should seal the structure EXTERNALLY with area portals. Do not seal interior rooms with area portals unless the room is large and has no link to the 'outdoors'. I can't explain why with such limited characters. If you want me to explain, send me a PM. A good rules of thumb for area portals is to not have too many visible area portals at one time, again if you want an explanation as to why PM me!
@cmbasnett Nah I think i got the idea :D thanks! basically if there is a lot of "activity" (props, etc.) in an area, confine it to that area with the portals, right?
Yea. This means that the area does not properly seal off two distinct areas from each other. Check that you've sealed off the doorway properly and that the geometry that is supposed to seal off these two areas is solid (not brush entities).
At 2:37 HOW in HELL did you do to place that texture in there with one keyboard strike ???? That would really save me some time trying to learn something about this wonderful tool.
Hum I have some problems trying to tell the real difference between "area portal" and "Skip-hint" tools.
Also Is there a Command or something in-game or in hammer that tells the PC "resources" in use while adding stuff to the map ???
@willownimph OH I thought that there was a way of pointing the mouse at a corner or something and by presing a keyboard shortcut a texture would fill the space (door, window, whatever) with a desired brush.
Thanks! But I was wondering if you can make an areaportal that opens with a door. So if the door is shut, it won't render anything behind it. Like an anti-lag room.
