@721areece Not sure on that one, I've known about this song for about 10 years. I finally decided to learn it and got it down solid in about 4 hours. What makes it so hard is the tempo. Practicing pentatonic modes like crazy makes it alot easier.
Some of the most impressive playing I've ever seen! This is one of Jaco's best recorded solos no doubt.. Hey man the action on that bass looks ultra low, can you detail the nature of how the bass is set up to achieve that? Much appreciated - totally in awe of what I've just seen here
@SpagsJippy Thanks, the way I set the action is, I like a slight bow in the neck, about the thickness of a credit card around the 5th & 7th fret markers. On the bridge, I lower the string saddles to the point where the strings just barely start to buzz, then raise them back up about a half a turn. And then of course make sure your intonation is dialed in and you're ready to go.
ok sry about questions. one more thing. first of all i don't realy care about looks, like you i'd prefer sound and also use roto but do they just cause cosmetic/aesthetic damage on a fretless or more than that such as bad/damaging wear to the fingerboard and is epoxying a must or can you play safely using rotos without epoxying.
one more thing whilst i'm here lol. what do you use to get your sound on this vid
@71m3w4573r Just cosmetic damage is all, as far as damaging the board to the point of strings buzzing or anything, no. You can play without epoxy on bare wood but it would be kind of muddy sounding. The epoxy just gives a harder surface that gives better sustain and brighter tone. All I did for this video was just plugged straight into the amp behind me, it's an old Fender BXR 300C.
also are you getting that sound with flat wound or are you using roto's? i'm new to fretless in fact still in the process of sanding and epoxying at the mo and wondered what the sound diff from roto's to flat wound would be
@71m3w4573r I've always used Rotos. The only bass I've ever used flat wounds on was a stand up bass. Rotos are brighter and louder, flats are dull and thumpy sounding. The only draw back with Rotos are, they are a bit abrasive on the board and for that reason some people don't use them. But if you're not concerned with looks like me, then you're good. All I care about is the sound quality, looks always come second.
Becoming faster depends on how you practice. I've been playing for almost 30 years and I'm still learning. Practice the modes and make up your own exercises, always making sure they are accurate, making your hands do what you want them to without thinking about it. Kind of like riding a bike, if you were to think about all the little things you were doing at the same time your brain would fry. lol It's all about muscle memory, making everything streamlined and efficient.
Excellent! Without a doubt the best cover I've seen for this tune.
What advice would you give to improve two finger picking speed? I play close to the bridge and I've been working on playing bass more lightly on bass (finger picking and fretting hand). Other than practicing your butt off, is there anything else to keep in mind? After hearing this cover, its quite obvious you are the person I need to ask.
Incredible work and excellent articulation. I've subscribed!
