I haven't played SF4 online in like 6 months. I'm still at around 3000 GP in CM so that should tell you how much time I spend online. I do play ST HD remix more often though as I find it way faster than SF4. I'm not that good at SF4 TBH, mainly because I hardly practice. I made these videos because I like Gouken and love exploring options with him. Maybe I'll take SSF4 a bit more seriously if they fixed some of the issues with SF4.
Go to my first Gouken combo video (dummy Seth) and click on the video response which is a championship match replay. Watch the ending. Gouken's can travel fast thanks to his EX demon flip, so you'd be surprised how many times you can punish fireball spammers. All these combos are a lot more common than you may think.
Great Combos but man that damage scaling is really killing your damage output. So the idea in a real match would be to keep my combos 3 - 9 hits long, right?
That's tight. It is indeed optimal to lower combos in certain circumstances but not others. Lemme explain: if I happen to catch my opponent with, say charge FB and I'm in the air with an EX demon flip, then I have to propel him in the air to get the opportunity to place my ultra. The only way to do that is to combo some more, so this is an example of a situation where I must combo MORE. Now if I have a full ultra and I catch my opponent with a focus attack, then I should just send my ultra
cont'd: because if I actually try to get fancy and instead of sending the ultra, I decide to dash forward, s.HP, EX palm, EX cancel, ultra, then the damage will be the same as just a simple ultra after the focus attack without all that unnecessary stuff that opens up a chance for mistakes in which case my opponent has the chance to get me back. Get it? You have to use your judgment . Search for mustain21 and watch his SF4 fight vs Abel. He had to combo his opponent to be able to throw the ultra.
I see what you were talking about in the video you mentioned. I understand if the long combo string insures you landing the knockout hit better that than letting your opponent get up and make a comeback. So it's about the situation.
Exactly, it's 100% situational. And with online lag, certain things that are normally safe aren't anymore. Example; if you're playing an opponent with a 3 bar connection, and you got him with an EX palm in the corner, don't even bother throwing a HP fireball then ultra; just go directly for the ultra. I can't tell you how many times I whiffed because of input lag when I never ever miss offline. Having to change your strategy because of online lag is sad but necessary.
Well thanx man for the advice, I really want to improve my Gouken. He was the charcter I was looking most forward to in SF4 and I'm gonna keep trying to improve my Skills.
I hear ya. I bought SF4 JUST to learn Gouken. Too bad he isn't as strong a character as his story would have you believe. No wonder why he's mid-tier. He has some pretty tough match-ups.
Well being Mid-Tier is a good thing. But yeah my problems are when I face anyone with a command throw and not having a normal dragon punch to reverse with all that leaves you with are EX Hurricane Kicks or mindgames. One thing I would suggest them do in Super SF4 is shortan the height of his Hurricane Kicks but keep the damage so that he doesn't get punished as easy for a mistake.
I think Hori Real Arcade Pro 3 for PS3 can now be preordered from amazon. It'll run for like $110. I can't use a home arcade stick to save my life. a cabinet maybe, but not the actual stick. There's a certain way you're supposed to place your fingers on the buttons (the most optimal way) but I still haven't figured out how. Found a video here on youtube that teaches you how so maybe I need to sit down and watch it.
They're much easier than you think. None of these combos require links; you just need to input what you see with accuracy and good timing. Just try them on your own, and I'm sure you'll be able to do them. Ask away if you need help.
Yeah, all of them. My friends keep telling me that I need to switch to stick but I haven't had the chance to do that, especially since I don't play much anymore. I somehow find it easier to do on a controller, but the truth is; if you wanna get good at this or any other fighting game, you need to learn how to use a stick.
That's what i hear from alot of people. And it's true. On controller i can't even activate Ultras! But on stick i can to Gouken's back throw into ultra
It's really a matter of what you're used to. I played on PS controller a lot, even in certain competitions. If I was planning on getting better at SF4, then I certainly would permanently switch to stick. But since I have more important things to focus on in my life, making the switch is unnecessary, especially if you factor in the actual cost of a decent stick.
I'm not really too good on the Ps3 controller, if anything i'm better on the Xbox360. And yeah, i agree on the cost thing.. my friend spent up to about $50 on a stick, than about $100 more to mod it (I think, could've been more)
I don't use a PS3 controller either. I purchased a PS to PS usb adapter and it works on my PS3. I'm able to connect my old PS and PS2 controllers to the PS3. They work really well. Way better than the sixaxis IMO.
In my video of Gouken combo, i tried to avoid the best i can that they wont be repetitive, you have alot of the same stuff in this video, only a few minor things change. They are alright but not impressive..Good work though :)
In the video description, I specifically wrote: "Others liked what they saw and wanted more. That's why I made this video. You may find some combos small or unimpressive, but I was just trying to show you what works and what doesn't. Overall, this video will give you some inspiration if you want to learn to use Gouken."
I still don't play: I promised to make another combo video, and I keep my promises. Plus as you said, not many people use Gouken so if I retire, I need to make sure I pass on my knowledge to as many people as possible. Thanks for the comment.
i though u dont play Street fighter 4 nomore, but anyway nice to see u back with the new combos video. i really like it, not much ppl online use gouken, and those combos really impressed me. good video, keep it up
