Dont't take any heed of this guy!! Expert he is not. If you have a genuine interest find a proper teacher - even look else where on u Tube as there are many excelent pipers whe would serve well as a role models.

Best way is probably to join your local band however if you find this joker is a pipe teacher there as he claims then my advice would skip that band.

The GHB is a great instrument when played well and truly awful when not!

i'm only a beginner (well past this stage tho), but for other beginner who have some use for this excercise, don't lift your fingers that high... it will allow u to play faster in the future

he's just lifting them high to show more clearly what fingers need to be lifted and put back in place

Wow jonjeny. Those insults are such a great way to get more people to want to learn the pipes. Personally, I'm glad you play the pipes, and I encourage you to spend more time playing them. In fact, I'd call it a great service to Humanity, considering what filth comes out of your mouth otherwise.

Just started my bagpipes in my army cadet corp finnally got my very own bagpipes lent out to me. Know the scale by heart but it's the grace notes, burls, and trippletts that i don't get very well.

His chanter sounds better then mine lol, mines just an $80 pipers choice while the pipes are over a grand.

I got my chanter through my Army Cadet corps pipe and drums band it's like an $80 pipers choice practice chanter, but there's some from McCallum bagpipes that are pretty good though im unsure about the price I've only been looking at the bagpipes for when i get enought money to buy my own set.

Ok, heres the thing. I live in colombia, no bagpipe instructors here. Bought a Mcallum practice chanter, got my first lesson book with instructional cd. NO GOOD! I need a freakin neurotic instructor that will yell at me when I do something wrong... LOL! No but really... I need a way to learn the right way, what should i do people?

There are teachers who teach over the internet using skype, I think, and you could contact one of them and get lessons with them from your computer. You'd just need a webcam first, though.

I love how a "bagpipe instructor" like this guy shows the "right" way to play bagpipes by demonstrating some of the poorest finger posture I've ever seen as a bagpiper. Please stop "teaching" people on Youtube. For the sake of this instrument, let them find a qualified instructor with whom they can meet personally. Our ultimate goal is to produce quality music, you can't do that just by watching "instructional" videos such as this one.

It's almost impossible to self-learn, and even if you do, you won't be all that great. My advice is to get a live instructor; this instrument is one of the hardest out there.
