It appears you're tracking the sun manually. I'd use dual linear actuators / axis. They'll do up to 1500 lbs per actuator and you can get a 48" stroke. It's very low duty cycle. Table look up with a programmed offset would be the best way to go with coding the controller.. I had a couple of small HCPV (high concentration PV) arrays . Good size 10-12kW is a very sustainable small ranch / farm array. If you get it tracking you'll need a wind stow circuit.. Good job keep up the good work!!
The only thing I want to know is: how much of the collected sunlight comes out as electricity in the other end? I doubt it can keep up with the multi-junction photovoltaic cells that are available today. I doubt it can't even keep up with the good ol' siliconbased cells.
@TedRobotBuilder Yeah I was noticing that. I only ever worked one power plant, but as learning experiences go I was an information sponge, and the water vapor is usually recycled in the cooling towers (he could power the circulation system directly form the generator too.)
You know, if you superheated a semi-viscus liquid (some type of oil) with a significantly higher boiling point than water, placed a water reservoir on it to heat by Conduction/Convection, you could theoretically set up a situation in which you could maintain a temp over 100C 24/7 for sustainable solar power. The oil would be >100C the whole time, probably spiking up to around 200C mid-day, and would, itself, heat the water continuously.
The evacuated tube collectors I sell @ coastalsolar.ca produce just over 1700w in full sun for a 30tube unit. That's about 6'x8' area. So his overall collector area is 181sqft. Our collector has 48sqft so his is about 3.8X the size. Our evacuated tube units are extremely efficient and no tracker needed. In the same area our's would produce just under 6.5kw. So pushing a 12kw generator assuming losses wouldn't work on his setup.
Also, you have to take into account the efficiency of the steam engine. So even with a good evacuated tube collector setup.... you won't achieve anywhere near the electrical output that you do have in thermal output. To automate it you'd need a water dosing pump that adds the exact amount to turn into steam with temp sensor on output. Hotter temp = more input water, etc. The stirling engine is a better bet but no affordable units out there yet.

Great work! But how about combining a big photovoltaic cell in the focal point (efficiency = 16-20 %) with a efficient water circulation cooling system (with a truck cooler)?
@Terascon when you focus light on a photoV cell the heat deteriorates the cell quickly. 3M has a reflective coating that allows the heat portion to not be reflected. it did increase the output about 20-30% with solar tracking algorithm.
@garand I see the problem. But I think (hope), that a strong and permanent stream of cooling water over the frontside and the backside of the photovoltaic cell (then encased in a flat closed glass container and coated with synthetic resin) could keep the temperature low enough (under 212 F) to prevent the deterioration of the cell. The warmed-up water could then be cooled down in a car or truck cooler (closed cooling system).
In the video they talk about some special modifications to the mirror array.
I do know that if a person uses "regular mirror" or second surface mirrors that you loose a tiny bit if efficiency due to the light being bounced THROUGH the glass 2 times and also the type and color of the glass used in the mirrors.
What would work better is first surface mirror like the big companies use.
Good luck finding that type of mirrored glass.
Also the elements tend to remove the coating unless they are coated

Why don't you aim the light source directly at the rotators of the turbine you want to turn instead of wasting all the lights potential energy transforming the energy into steam and pressure and torque and other mechanical forms first. It would be way more efficient.
Area looks like ~35 m^2 and the insolation is at very best 1000 W/m^2. So the collected thermal power is 35 kW. I doubt that he can *generate* 12 kW from 35 kW since his efficiency would be +30%. The efficiency of this system is likely to be half - 6 kW for a 1000 W/m^2 of insolation and perhaps only 3-4 kW with typical insolation. His generator is very likely oversized. The overall system in still nice.
There are people who are doing this with Stirling engines (stirlingenergyDOTcom). Those at the "stirling energy" website create about 25kW with about the same footprint, however, I suspect the price tag is rough. Steam engine technology seems more accessible somehow, but Stirling would be more tidy. No hot water to worry about. Just a nice dry engine with wires coming out of it.

That's great! Now add a condenser to recapture the water from the steam output and recirculate with a pump connected mechanically to the axel of your turbine/generator or electrically from the output. This will conserve water and increase your power output. As for how to aim the panels to track the sun automatically, there are cheap solutions out there that can operate off of the electrical feed with minimum usage of power.. do a little research. I can supply my design block diagram..
So far so good! Develope you scavging system to take the steam blow off to another chamber (condenser) to provide a continous loope to the boiler to reuse the water over and over.
use oil in a closed system, that is what they use in the powerplants in the deserts, boils faster, and absorbe more heat I think. you need to fix a closed system first, ofc. lowering the boiling point should give way more pressure, increasing the heat absorbtion would also do that, and add that to a closed system and you got alot of power I think. A parabot instead of 100 mirrors to adjust is also a good idea. perfect focus vs the one you got now. and only one large mirror to adjust
I am designing a heliostat mirror system for my home's use that will use 750 square feet of mirror mounted on my garage roof South of the house about 25 feet to focus additional sunlight on my 576 square feet of flat plate hot water collectors mounted up on the South facing house roof.
The trick is trying to aim these using a computer and getting them to point where I want them and then track the sun all day and extend the available time of collection.
Close that loop and condense/use the water and vastly improve the system. Still very impressive to turn a 12KV generator which is about all the electricity you will need.
Great project. it looks like 16m2 or 170 sft, if it is at noon of a good solar radiation day, we can guess about 1000 w/m2, so max power out would be about 3 kw, because all efficiency factors to consider. That is good for a house. Practical problems, mirror cleaning, sun tracking, wind on the structure, electronic power modulation, some energy storage to make a smooth energy flow.

IF you are building something that just heats the water but it stays below the boiling point , then no as it is just a water heater and there is no pressure other than from the circulation pump.
If you are building something that makes steam , then the boiler needs to be certified by an engineer AND you need to have a boiler's license to run it .
Below 15PSI steam pressure you need a "C" class low pressure boiler's license.
Above that you need a "B" class high pressure license .
Neat idea. Need a computerized tracking and focusing system to make it viable. otherwise might spend two days focusing it. And closed loop is the way to go. Steam is old school though. I think the next breakthrough will be along these lines will be with a chemical process like what happens in a solar panel. Takes the headache associated with mechanical systems out of the equation.
Were you thinking of a chemical system in general that reacts with the available wavelengths of sunlight or were you thinking along the lines of pumping something different through the system as a more efficient heat transfer medium or "phase change material" of some sort?
There is a guy in my city that has been experimenting with those materials and has access to a chemical engineer to colaborate with him on it.
They have not come up with a really cost effective solution YET.

Siemens does something like what you are suggesting, but seems to only serve the coal/diesel/nuclear companies. What a pity.
In my free time I used to work on a steam tug boat of 1924; it made use of a condensor that provided a vacuum to pull the last cylinder, which as you mentioned improved the efficiency.
Respect for the alignment of all that seperate mirrors to concentrate the light to the boiler, a challenge itself.
If people with this kind of applications get results as shown, just imagine the potential power use from the sun, if more money is invested in development of solar energy.
Another thing I have heard about is when the feed piping is run up into the dish receiver , people have used a different way to preheat the cooler water a bit before it gets to the focal point or receiver.
They put ONE pipe INSIDE of the other !!

You run the cooler water around the outside and the super hot water down the middle or perhaps it would work better the other other way around ??
Either way you would have the piping itself insulated from the ambient air.
A clever person could install a geothermal ground loop system without the compressor and just use circulation pumps.
You could then take the used steam and condensate it via a heat exchanger with the cold ground water from the ground loops.
That heat is then stored in the ground 4 your heating purposes in the winter and then just pump the ground heat back out into a water 2 air exchanger 2 heat your house and probably your garage also.
@2009mechanic I wan't to make a thing like this really badly exept I don't understand how you get water back into the boiler. Don't you waste a bunch of energy pushing against the pressure and also, because you seem to know a lot, does a radiator style boiler work better than just a tank of water.

There is a company in Turkey that makes Photo Voltaic Thermal (PVT) panels that incorporate copper tubing affixed to a flat plate which the solar cells are mounted.
This keeps the solar cells MUCH cooler thereby GREATLY increasing their efficiency.
Heat is bad for PV cells just like any electronics device.
The extra hot water heat generated by the dark PV cells is then used elsewhere.

By increasing the temperature of the steam, he would be raising the theoretical carnot thermodynamic efficiency limit. A superheater can be a copper tube that passes through the focal point of an auxilliary solar dish, or just the interior of the boiler. Basically, he looked over a lot of crucial technical details and could have done a better job : \.

This IS what I am designing and building for the receiver at the focal point of the dish .
My thinking was it would be better to circulate a smaller amount of water through the copper coiled receiver to better heat it and convert to higher temperature steam ?
Perhaps should I just build the Sterling engine with a refrigerant ??
@2009mechanic Heating less water would in turn cause less heat to be lost and faster heating. However, you will need a water feed system that will drip water into the tube at exactly the same rate as it is used. This is very do-able if you recycle the steam from the output, condense it by pre-heating the water that enters you home's water heater for example. A stirling engine is a good alternative, but you will need to use a REALLY reliable cooling system and a robust engine design.
Did you though about closed circuit of water? In that case, you need to add an compressor and condenser. Moreover, you could add regenerator. It won't loose any water and you can gain higher power due to higher efficiency.
I don't know if anyone is still responding to this video, but here it goes anyway....
Why not run a 2,000 watt burner (like the large one off a stove) for a heat source for the boiler? You wouldn't have to depend on the sun then. If it can handle that saw like it shows in the video then it should also be able to power a burner. There ya go, you will also then have KIND OF a perpetual machine then too ; )

A 12 kW generator dosn't mean it produce 12 kW of electric power.
Sun produce 1 kW by square meter. To get 12 kW you need at least 12 square meters.
Modern Steam engine efficiency: 40%. (clearly in this video it's not a modern steam engine... ) the efficiency is between 6% and 20$.
All this to say that he need a pannel of 200 square meters or 2152.782 ft² to produce 12 kW.

In the video they talk about some special modifications to the mirror array.
I do know that if a person uses "regular mirror" or second surface mirrors that you loose a tiny bit if efficiency due to the light being bounced THROUGH the glass 2 times and also the type and color of the glass used in the mirrors.
What would work better is first surface mirror like the big companies use.
Good luck finding that type of mirrored glass.
Also the elements tend to remove the coating unless they are coated

While the Federal Government and many politicians publicly support such experiments I have been threatened with jail, subjected to six years of IRS audits, entailing weeks of going over even the smallest of personal expenses and then fined for writing off such R&D work. and for two years the finds for using money I earned for such R&D have amounted to over 90% of my adjusted gross income…. Why don't you aim the light source directly at the rotators of the turbine you want to turn instead of wasting all the lights potential energy transforming the energy into steam and pressure and torque and other mechanical forms first. It would be way more efficient.

Area looks like ~35 m^2 and the insolation is at very best 1000 W/m^2. So the collected thermal power is 35 kW. I doubt that he can *generate* 12 kW from 35 kW since his efficiency would be +30%. The efficiency of this system is likely to be half - 6 kW for a 1000 W/m^2 of insolation and perhaps only 3-4 kW with typical insolation. His generator is very likely oversized. The overall system in still nice.

There are people who are doing this with Stirling engines (stirlingenergyDOTcom). Those at the "stirling energy" website create about 25kW with about the same footprint, however, I suspect the price tag is rough. Steam engine technology seems more accessible somehow, but Stirling would be more tidy. No hot water to worry about. Just a nice dry engine with wires coming out of it.

That's great! Now add a condenser to recapture the water from the steam output and recirculate with a pump connected mechanically to the axel of your turbine/generator or electrically from the output. This will conserve water and increase your power output. As for how to aim the panels to track the sun automatically, there are cheap solutions out there that can operate off of the electrical feed with minimum usage of power.. do a little research. I can supply my design block diagram..

Uncannily similar to my solarfy rendering...(at 10 seconds).
Except the rendering is in thin air and uses CPV instead of a steam or Stirling engine. Nice to see someone REALLY doing it!
Solar needs an "oil like" company that does it all "under one roof" in order to compete with coming shale oil and tar sands.
We are just about at peak "easy oil" already...
However, THIS IS AWESOME! I didn't know that 143 suns could boil water and cut wood!

use oil in a closed system, that is what they use in the powerplants in the deserts, boils faster, and absorbe more heat I think. you need to fix a closed system first, ofc. lowering the boiling point should give way more pressure, increasing the heat absorbtion would also do that, and add that to a closed system and you got alot of power I think. A parabot instead of 100 mirrors to adjust is also a good idea. perfect focus vs the one you got now. and only one large mirror to adjust

I am designing a heliostat mirror system for my home's use that will use 750 square feet of mirror mounted on my garage roof South of the house about 25 feet to focus additional sunlight on my 576 square feet of flat plate hot water collectors mounted up on the South facing house roof.
The trick is trying to aim these using a computer and getting them to point where I want them and then track the sun all day and extend the available time of collection.
I plan to use 3 speed H2O pumps

Great project. it looks like 16m2 or 170 sft, if it is at noon of a good solar radiation day, we can guess about 1000 w/m2, so max power out would be about 3 kw, because all efficiency factors to consider. That is good for a house. Practical problems, mirror cleaning, sun tracking, wind on the structure, electronic power modulation, some energy storage to make a smooth energy flow.
Lots of work ahead, keep us posted!!!

Sterling cycle engines have not come far enough yet to be effective at the small scale I am talking about .
About the only way I think I could transfer the heat from outside up on a tower is by pump a transfer oil of some kind.
Any ideas of what types of oil would take the temperature extremes and also will not freeze solid at -40 Deg Far.??
I could then use the hot oil to boil water to steam for an indoor steam engine or small scale turbine ??
I'll take any ideas on this.

I am planning on building something similar to this.
I now have 7 of the old C-Band satellite dishes , 3 of them 10 feet and 4 of them 8 feet in diameter.
I plan on putting them in 2 rows so the 3 10' dishes will be in a row and the 4 8' dishes in another row .
Both rows mounted next to each other and put up on a 40' monopole to get them up into the sunlight because of my location.
My biggest problem is that I live in Minnesota so it gets COLD here.
I cannot use water or steam outside

IF you are building something that just heats the water but it stays below the boiling point , then no as it is just a water heater and there is no pressure other than from the circulation pump.
If you are building something that makes steam , then the boiler needs to be certified by an engineer AND you need to have a boiler's license to run it .
Below 15PSI steam pressure you need a "C" class low pressure boiler's license.
Above that you need a "B" class high pressure license .

There are also laws regarding boilers in your states' plumbing codes .
If you go to a high pressure steam turbine then you need an "A" class turbine boiler's license.
Unless you work with this stuff every day at your job , you are not going to just go out and be able to get one.
There are laws regarding that as well and has much to do with the "hours" you are credited for running and maintenancing boilers.
I have my license so I don't need to worry about this solar equipment much.

Neat idea. Need a computerized tracking and focusing system to make it viable. otherwise might spend two days focusing it. And closed loop is the way to go. Steam is old school though. I think the next breakthrough will be along these lines will be with a chemical process like what happens in a solar panel. Takes the headache associated with mechanical systems out of the equation.

Were you thinking of a chemical system in general that reacts with the available wavelengths of sunlight or were you thinking along the lines of pumping something different through the system as a more efficient heat transfer medium or "phase change material" of some sort?
There is a guy in my city that has been experimenting with those materials and has access to a chemical engineer to colaborate with him on it.
They have not come up with a really cost effective solution YET.

It looks like he is running a steam engine but it is an open loop engine.
Mainly he is just heating the water to get live steam and then letting it go.
A waste of water and BTU's from the steam .
Why not make it a closed loop solar boiler just like building heating plants and use a condenser makeup feed water pump running on PV panels too.
It is a very do-able idea.
You will have a more efficient system by reusing the leftover heat after the steam is dead to pre-warm makeup feed water.

In my free time I used to work on a steam tug boat of 1924; it made use of a condensor that provided a vacuum to pull the last cylinder, which as you mentioned improved the efficiency.
Respect for the alignment of all that seperate mirrors to concentrate the light to the boiler, a challenge itself.
If people with this kind of applications get results as shown, just imagine the potential power use from the sun, if more money is invested in development of solar energy.

In my area we have a lot of guys interested in the old steam engine stuff.
They actually have "threshing Days" and they fire everything up .
The public can walk around and watch the old stuff and it still runs great.
On the steam boat ; what is the condenser cooled by?
It is ambient air pushed through the condenser with a fan or is it a water to water exchanger using river water to condense the steam with.
I am trying to figure out how to accomplish this at home and the extra heat??

Another thing I have heard about is when the feed piping is run up into the dish receiver , people have used a different way to preheat the cooler water a bit before it gets to the focal point or receiver.
They put ONE pipe INSIDE of the other !!
Heat exchanger!
You run the cooler water around the outside and the super hot water down the middle or perhaps it would work better the other other way around ??
Either way you would have the piping itself insulated from the ambient air.

A clever person could install a geothermal ground loop system without the compressor and just use circulation pumps.
You could then take the used steam and condensate it via a heat exchanger with the cold ground water from the ground loops.
That heat is then stored in the ground 4 your heating purposes in the winter and then just pump the ground heat back out into a water 2 air exchanger 2 heat your house and probably your garage also.
Install solar PV panels and batteries 4power

You WANT to heat water in volume inside a sealed container to contain the heat and pressure.
This is basic boiler theory.
The cold water is fed back into the boiler using a condensate pump.
Same as a home heating system like low pressure steam.
Hot water boiler heat (not steam) on the other hand uses a circulation pump to force the water through the system.
4 solar use PV panels with battery backup 4 pump power.

Yes it would require some real planning and some engineering.
Most of what you need to know is already in books or on the internet if you look for it .
I have been planning mine for 3 years now.
Much of the time was spent looking for the materials that I wanted for making it work .
Think low budget.
If I can keep the cost of the whole project below $10,000 over say a 5 year period then I'm doing good.
Once mine is up and running , it doesn't cost me anything for the energy at that point.

This video was a very good start for the author's point of view.
I am just thinking about HOW to recover as much of the heat from the sunlight as possible and either use it or store it somehow.
You do have to figure in your efficiencies and also losses .
That is why I intend on using solar PV panels with storage batteries for the electrical part of it to run the necessary pumps and controls.
Utilizing both types of solar just makes more sense and also makes it more green.

This comment doesn't have much to do with this video.
There is a company in Turkey that makes Photo Voltaic Thermal (PVT) panels that incorporate copper tubing affixed to a flat plate which the solar cells are mounted.
This keeps the solar cells MUCH cooler thereby GREATLY increasing their efficiency.
Heat is bad for PV cells just like any electronics device.
The extra hot water heat generated by the dark PV cells is then used elsewhere.
Efficiency is about 70% conversion rate !!

@2009mechanic Not to mention the fact that he's using wet steam. He can dramatically increase efficiency if he used a superheater. By increasing the temperature of the steam, he would be raising the theoretical carnot thermodynamic efficiency limit. A superheater can be a copper tube that passes through the focal point of an auxilliary solar dish, or just the interior of the boiler. Basically, he looked over a lot of crucial technical details and could have done a better job : \.

Would it be more efficient to use a coiled copper tube collector or receiver at the focal point instead of the tank heating the water in volume ?
This IS what I am designing and building for the receiver at the focal point of the dish .
My thinking was it would be better to circulate a smaller amount of water through the copper coiled receiver to better heat it and convert to higher temperature steam ?
Perhaps should I just build the Sterling engine with a refrigerant ??

@2009mechanic Heating less water would in turn cause less heat to be lost and faster heating. However, you will need a water feed system that will drip water into the tube at exactly the same rate as it is used. This is very do-able if you recycle the steam from the output, condense it by pre-heating the water that enters you home's water heater for example. A stirling engine is a good alternative, but you will need to use a REALLY reliable cooling system and a robust engine design.

Did you though about closed circuit of water? In that case, you need to add an compressor and condenser. Moreover, you could add regenerator. It won't loose any water and you can gain higher power due to higher efficiency.

Why not run a 2,000 watt burner (like the large one off a stove) for a heat source for the boiler? You wouldn't have to depend on the sun then. If it can handle that saw like it shows in the video then it should also be able to power a burner. There ya go, you will also then have KIND OF a perpetual machine then too ; )
