This song has nothing to do with a girl. Bono wrote this song about his struggles with his father over the years. He sings that he is a man now, and not a child. But, he can still see his own shadow in the eyes of his father. He's afraid to become his father, but he's forever a part of who he is. It's a beautiful song about the father-son dynamic.

well, in fairness, he wrote it after a failed kite-flying attempt with his daughters who gave up, wanting to go home and play computer games. it was only when he showed it to the edge that edge pointed it out, basically sayin' "whether you realise it or not, this is about your da". it took on a new meaning for bono then and he now says it's about letting go of anyone you were close to... "could be a lover, could be a father, could be a friend" (loose quote)
