People on here do realize that almost everything on The Resistance is taking the piss, right? Muse says that themselves. What's funny is they won the Grammy for it (which I'm sure they had an excellent laugh about) If you really want to listen to Muse then listen to another album. The Resistance is just a good laugh plus a symphony and a song called MK Ultra. Anyway, nice video :D As a Muse fan who always found Uprising a bit boring, this was very funny.
Nice man, well done. First time I heard Uprising all these bits were obvious.. if they're going to wear their influences on their sleeve, they should be upfront about it.
You know Blondie is actually touring a mashup of Call Me and Uprising? it's essentially just her lyrics over the instruments, but it fits really well.
It's good to have influences, I like Dr. Who, Blonde and Billy Idol too!
If you want to make medleys be a Dj, but don't call yourself a songwriter.
I blame people who listen to bad radio and buy shitty records.
I really don't understand how someone would want to listen to the same 15 songs a day for 3 months meanwhile getting the CD so they can hear 11 more of the same songs at their dispense when there is so much good music in the world.
@jieuxarmeni Hey! I know you! Yah... this is pretty blatant. plagiarism is faster than creativity... but people always find out. Too bad they're making millions on it.
okay a few months ago a few of my friends took 4 chords in the same progresion and found at least 40 popular songs over the last 15 years. There is nothing! new out there. I still love me some muse though
Its because the majority of songs in western music use the same scale, after the millions of songs that have been written its magical that just 7 notes can creat such variety. There's gonna be similarities but thats becasue the scale has 'sweet spots' :). Tho the 'call me' bit in this song is unmistakable
Man, I totally thought it sounded like Billy Idol and Blondie together as well. Thanks for putting this together or else I would've done the same thing.
The Dr. Who theme is heavily doctored (pardon the pun). It's not in fact that similar to the Muse melody. However, I'd heard a lot of people drawing comparisons so I decided to try and make it work.
Nice work on the sound of this video!!! You know mathematically all melodies have been created. So not surprising now that songs are starting to be more and more similar.
I think that's debatable, and depends on how you define the parameters of a melody. And for the record, I don't think that the measure of a melody - or any aspect of a piece of music - is in it's originality, but instead in it's degree of expression.
Of course, that is something much harder to quantify...
Well that definition is debatable. For instance here is one from the American Heritage Dictionary: "A rhythmically organized sequence of single tones so related to one another as to make up a particular phrase or idea"
They keyword there is rhythm. Incorporating rhythm and subdivisions the number of possible melodies for a given sequence of notes increases exponentially.
Additionally there are of course many other "pitches" outside of the 12 tones of Western Music that can be used in sequence.
However, again - originality for me isn't what gives a piece of music it's value. 12-tone music was an attempt to break free of the restrictions of "tonal music" - creating *very* original melodies - but most of them are not particularly memorable or worthwhile for me.
A measure of a melody is not in its originality but in it's emotional impact - it's ability to evoke a reaction in the listener. And often times it is from *unoriginality* that such impact arises.
For instance, "tonality" can be seen as a musical language built around the tension found in the notes of a V7 chord resolving to a I chord. That idea is very unoriginal, and has been around since far before even the work of J.S. Bach.
However, some would argue that the familiarity of the meaning behind this V7 -> I motion is what gives that progression meaning for us. It is only through the *unoriginality* of this progression that we can evoke this classic emotion of tension-and-release.
Very well phrased - and what a good video too! I like it a lot that you were both able to recognize all the references AND refrain from chasticing Muse for it, although I'm not sure I would take pride in this song ...
@phnord In that case... how many musicians have made a living off of 1 - 4 - 5 progressions and variations? However, You can make it your own. Hell - look at the blues! This piece ( Uprising ) seems more and more like a cut and paste job... and that is not music. If they wanted to make these other pieces their own, they could just add the keynote and put their own spin and I think we would all be fine with it.
Dam right, they're trying something different each album, why should they care if people are too pathetic to realise that they aren't going to want to play the same music for 10 years straight. If these people actually wrote music, they'd realise writing styles changes over time due to influences etc. However I do like this video, it's quite humerous. I back you, this album is great, not their best, but great.
haha it's very true. parts of their song are similar. i caught the "call me" part of the song. i also think that Guiding Light is a little too queen-esque. same with united states of eurasia. what others????
umm, anyone else disappoined that there are a crapload of stolen bits across the album as illustrated by this vid? I'm a HUUUGE Muse fan but its really annoying that they did that
I keep wanting to refine it, and say make the Dr. Who part sound less crappy. However, I've fussed over the whole thing so much that if I keep doing it I'm not going to stop. So I'm leaving it how it is.

Well a melody : a succession of notes forming a distinctive sequence - is that more precise of a parameter =D
I truly agree, for today and times to come, the originality of music will rely on its degree of expression, symbology and lyrics. Wouldn't you say?
Shashanounou 2 years ago
