Got the new Mark 7. Better than the original. All the notes sound good if you know what you're doing. I had it tuned by a professional that knew how to BLEND the keyboard. All the Mark 1's come with their inherent problems. This is a much improved keyboard when tuned well. If you think this sounds like a synth, then go back to your plug in. Nothing sounds like a real Rhodes with tines and tonebars. You can't make a mechanical Rhodes sound like a synth and vice versa. You need real ears.
Maybe anyone will explain to me why from the note n° 51 to upnotes, Rhodes chooses good "brillant metallic" sound and from n°51 to downnotes, Rhodes chooses "neutral" sound ? How to resolve it on my new Rhodes ?
@2245DRUMMER You could've fooled me. I can hear differences between this and the old product run, but I can also detect the similarities.
I for one would go with a vintage model if I knew that these new models ensured there are now spare parts for those older ones. I think that's a reason I picked a Yamaha CP70. It uses regular piano strings.
@CircleCityEric Agreed, I would choose a CP70 over a new rhodes any day. When Roland bought out fender rhodes the product lost so much of what it used to be. These just dont have the attitude the old ones had
@CircleCityEric Yamaha all day everyday over any other brand except for wurlitzer even though Yamaha can simulate those vintage sounds well. I own a Yamaha mox8 (Lesser version of the motif xs8) it's awesome!!
@Pianocarneseur12 You're telling me. I just took delivery of an S90XS yesterday. I'm totally into this thing, and it could help me get past my dislike of using sampled sounds on tape.
@CircleCityEric Haha yup ha Yamaha always works their magic somewhere. The S90 xs looks really cool! i think roland just over does it with their fantom g series imean no one needs a screen that big and most people crack down on Yamaha for that but imean you don't buy it for the screen, you buy it for the sound. And touchscreen i'm not as into as others would be.
@Pianocarneseur12 A touchscreen would be nice, especially after owning a Korg D1600. That might've convinced me to get an M50, but it was between the screen + a joystick and a preferred sound + pitch/mod wheels. Yamaha had the sound and the wheels. LOL!
The only thing missing - so far - is a simulation of the carillon sound from the DX7. I remember hearing it on the Motif XS, but I haven't found it on the 90 yet.
@Pianocarneseur12 Maybe it is. The only other synthesizer I've got which has that sound has it cataloged under pitched percussion. But, our boards may have it logged with pads.
yo that's too much money just to order one man. i gots the try one out hands on before parting with thousands of pounds not that i dont think they're amazing . laters
@bopkick5 nah not yet. sadly im going blind on this one - but iv seen it and have played a suitcase mark1, a stage mark2 and compared to simulated sounds on keyboards, you just cant compare.
no stage piano/synth can compete with the visual presence of a real rhodes even the new ones.
sound wise theres no comparison again - theres just something about the sound of a real rhodes that cant be simulated, maybe its the little bumps and squeeks of the moving parts, i dont know
@bopkick5 Ive tried alot of different digital "rhodes sounds" and got close but im a sucker for the real thing.
I may just be too picky - but playing the real rhodes also has a "feel", the whole keyboard vibrates and shakes under your fingers - when you play hard you can feel each note vibrating through your fingertips!! and having the weight of real hammers is amazing - keyboards usually try to simulate acoustic piano action - but a rhodes is alot different and none have come close.
Sure - I dig you man - yeah ofcourse da real Rhodes is incomparable to even the best of the digital and "plug in" elctric piano sounds . I gigged for years with so called stars like Omar and Dennis Rollins using a 1980 Mark 2 Stage . i still have it but i'm really curious about how these new mark 7's feel and play . i would buy one if i could try one out here in london . but i aint gonna rake out 2 grand on something i never even played . Friend please let me know when you get your Mark 7?
@rhodesta this IS the real thing :-) no digital emulation, there's the real mechanics inside... anyway, i think it's a plastic bomber - the design and build quality is VERY crappy (tested in bern, switzerland...)
@rhodesta Harold Rhodes, the inventor, didn't like the Mark I's and Mark II's. He said the Mark V's were the best Rhodes yet. He was involved early in the Mark VII's. He wanted the Mark VII to be the improved Mark V. Google It.

No warm mids in the tines like an older Fender Rhodes. It's just to clicky and thin toned. Perfect for Mister Rogers make believe theater stuff.
