How to capture your screen using QuickTime X.mov

Once it has recorded my screen and i play the recording, all it plays is a white and grey checkered pattern with no sound.

how do you record the whole screen, including file and edit, and so on?

The sound comes from clicking on the little white arrow on the screen that pops up. What I'm wondering is if i can use it to capture game application screens, Portal, Team Fortress, Starcraft, Diablo, things like that. When i try it just gives me a black screen. Is there either a way to set it to record applications or set those screens to be max screen size instead of full screen?
