I couldn't care less about noise. I'm really only after the price, smoothness and coolness of airflow, and something I can fit in my garage. I've had so many problems with my airbrush compressor I got for like $70. Low working psi, moisture trap didn't work, there was an unsteady airflow, it was horrible. This sounds like something for me.
Does anyone recommend any brands in particular? Something not really expensive?
so does this mean that I can use my big compressors that I use for my tools to airbrush with? If I want a really low psi for detail will it be able to give me that psi eg 10 psi?
Hello I have a brand new airbrush compressor and airbrush gun, just bought it Model TC20 Power1/5 HP, Air Exhaust 1/8"BSP/NPT, Air Delivery 23-25 L/MIN my problem is it keeps turning off after a few seconds. I have never used one before and have only seen tutorials on youtube. I followed instructions on assembly which were vague at best. I did adjust the pressure nozzle. Any suggestions?
@GreenEyedTattedGurl The air compressor is turning off because the tank is full. durp...if its not full and is turning off then there should be a nob somewhere next to the gauge that u can set what psi it will turn off at. at least my 30gal one does. don't know about smaller ones. check the owners handbook.
how big is your tank? i've aquaired a workforce compressor, the manual specifies to pour oil inside the machine because it comes from fabric without it, to prevent spoiling it in stores.
there are compressor with a kind of termostat but for your pressure, if it reaches a certain level, it automatlically turns off the engine so the tank dont overfill and explode (luckyly they come with a pressure safety device).

Just to clear things up a little. The size fittings on most air compressors is actually ¼in npt it measures close to ½in. air brushes and their accessories usually use 1/8 in npt fittings. So if your at the hardware store looking for parts thats what youll need.
I've been planning to become more serious with airbrushing after buying a Badger Renegade R1V. It's my first gravity-feed airbrush. Unfortunately, my neglected hobby compressor can't generate enough pressure. There's no shop that can fix it. Fortunately, I've found one Lotus brand compressor. (Appx. US$200) It's small enough with a fair size tank. But I'll be studying overseas in mid-2010. Is it really worth buying a semi-pro compressor for a short use?
i just bought a iwata pro lite compreser from dick blick where i ive they have a scrach and dent room origanal price was 320.99 i got it for 60.00 bucks the only thing rong was a short in the power cord easy fix man that thing is so quiet u cant even tell its running sweet
The compressor will still be needed to fill the Tank. Or you can have it filled for you at some town station. Keep in mind Big tanks are heavy. The tank on the video is small one ~24 liter designed for only ~8 bar storage pressure.
@DoubleX31 Wow that's funny Maybe you can tell Cambell Hausfield that or even Sears! Hmmm Oh yeah right maybe yer just used to the Badger which IS the 1/8" fitting or an iwata which is 1/4".
Standard fittings on a full size compressor is 3/8".
i just brought a little clarke wiz air thig & a airmaster 116psi air compressor & wat I DONT EVEN USE THE DAMM LITTLE THING! this is because it cnt push the paint fro my airbrush lol
so if u are a uk er want to by a compressor from machien mart (PLEEEEEEZ DO NOT LET THEM RIP U OFF TRYING TOGET U TO BY THEIR SHIT JST BY A AIR MASTER COMPRESSOR WITH A REASONABLY SZD TANK!!!! p.s they wil try 2 get u to think that the regulator on the airmaster compressors are crap as well bt THEY R NOT O.K LOL
Yes billy, i too bought a wiz air and it really is only sufficient for *some* airbrushes (not mine). After reading a lot of forums on the web, a lot of people who get into airbrushing run into the same problem - they want a small, quiet compressor and imagine it will be 'good enough' because they are a beginner, so they buy something like the wiz and find it really can't do what they need it to do, to get used to airbrushing, with their airbrush. I have now ordered a 1hp machine
water in the tank, you will need to drain the tank of it, compressing air on cold days can case some water.... easy fix turn the air compresser on let it build it and then look at the bottom undo the drain plug and watch the water flow out JOB DONE
Me I have a 60 gal. 5 HP 140PSI oil compressor, and it works great I can paint with my HVLP gun for over 30 min. before the compressor kicks on cause the pressure drops below 90 PSI, of course I spray at only 15 PSI with my HVLP gun,and 20 PSI with airbrush , Bigger is better when it comes to air compressors and painting. Also you will need an adapter to hook ur nylon hose from ur airbrush to the standard quick disconnect which comes on most compressors, A good regulator is a must as well
Compressors that require oil are slighly quiter then oil less compressors, the both are about equilly priced, but oil less compressors tend to last longer with constant use as they stay cooler and have fewer moving parts. IMO you can never have to big of an air compressor, but then again im a car guy and have tons or airtools to I need a big compressor with a high CFM rating. If your just starting out a 3-5 gallon is ideal. If your planning to get heavy into it, Look into a 20 or 30 gallon.
Airbrush compressors are good because they provide constant air. With normal compressors, tank size,HP, and CFM rate matter big time, if you dont want down time, The compressor you have in the vid is good for starting out, but getting into detailed work that requires alot of time, you will want something bigger, so you dont have downtime waiting for it to fill back up, if pressure goes to far down, will result in bad paint flow, and maybe ruin hours of work.
hi, i just got my first badger renegade "rage" airbrush...my prob is, it has no instructions on how much PSI to use...pls help!!!...by the way, why do air regulators cost so freakin much!??!?!?! HEEELPP!!
You can buy a cheap regulator from home depot or harbor freight for usually under $10, and maybe $2 or $3 for the fittings to connect it to the compressor.
lewisadrian seems to be pretty ignorant on more than one level. You're right dancer4lyfe713, a compressor isn't essential. You can buy air in a tin. I've even seen a car tyre used to supply an airbrush with air.
is your craftsman air compressor oiled or oilless? i just bought a cambell huasfeld 2 gal for 47$, on sale from 129$!, but its oil-less. what do you prefer?
First, no airbrush hose use "half inch" connector. They are all 1/4". It is NPT threads in the US and likely BSP threads from Europe or Japan.
Second, why would anyone use a loud, oilless air-tools compressor for air brush? Yes, super quiet (<50 dBA) airbrush compressors are expensive, upward of $600-700. But most of the name brand airbrush manufacturers, Iwata etc., market small compressors that are quiet, reliable and have more than enough power for 1 to 2 airbrushes at $100-300.
First, some of us use hvlp guns for clear coating and other applications and the smaller units will not provide enough CFM and/or PSI for doing this.
Second, when used constantly, on and off, for an extended amount of time, the smaller units tend to heat up and wear rapidly, sometimes burning out completely
what should i get a 2hp 4gallon 110 psi comppressor or a 2hp 2 gallon 100 psi compressor i need a tank that fills up with air fast and i wouldnt need to stop and wait for the air to fill up agian
This is crap; the power has no meaning. Most compressors show the peak (start-up) horse-power. If you're going to buy a compressor look for the FAD (Free Air Delivery); Two stage compressors will ALWAYS deliver more air over single stages & more pressure is given out too.
Oilless compressors suck aswell, they are loud and break-down more easily. (Compaired to oil filled, two stage, belt driven compressors that are much quieter & last for ever.)
Stop the noise. Yes those oil free compressors are loud. If your just airbrushing, buy a airbrush compressor. You can get one for less than 120 bucks. Check for deals at Dick Blick art supply, or Michaels Arts and crafts. If you are a stater at airbrushing keep it small. If you use alot of air, buy a Ingersoll Rand. Or Quincy air compressors. Check your airbrush specs before buying air compressor
