On this date in 1963 {Feb. 16th} "South Street" entered Billboard's Hot Top 100; eventually it peaked at No. 3 and spent 13 weeks in the Top 100
Ranked 47th on Billboard's Year-End Hot 100 Singles of 1963 chart
Was the last of three straight records by the Orlons to make Billboard's Top 10; started with "The Wah Watusi" {#2}, then "Don't Hung Up {#4}, and finally "South Street {#3}...
I saw the Orlons in person! They were such a fun group and this song was so hot! It was a Dick Clark tour with many acts, but when the Orlons came out, the crowd went crazy!
Oh! Wow! I remember this song from when I was a little kid! I didn't know who sang it then and since then, it's been one of the songs just in my head. Thanks!
Co-opted by Cerritos Auto Square for their advertising jingle. I imagine they must have gotten all their copyright-infringement ducks in a row before it began to air.
I love this song! I used to shop on South Street back in the day! The sales guy at my favorite shoe store was the sharpest, coolest dresser I ever saw. I was wishing that he could teach me to be that stylish. I thought he was a genius!
@RaananVolesPianist The term was around for a long time before the late 1960s and Woodstock. It's jazz slang from the 1940s, and goes along with the use of "hip" to mean "not square" or "in the know" and the word "hipster". There's an entire wikipedia article on the word's origins. Fascinating stuff, go read it.
@RaananVolesPianist I was also curious about the term "hippie" being used in 1962. The terms hipster and hippie derive from the word hip, whose origins are unknown. The term hipster was coined by Harry Gibson in 1940. "Hippy Hippy Shake" was a hit song in Australia for Chan Romero in 1959. The Beatles covered it live in 1963. It's on their "Live at the BBC" album.
SOUTH STREET what a megahit by the one and only ORLONS . 1962 forever for this doo wop rocknroll historian who lived those years. what a group what a song what a string of megahit songs. thanks Orlons. TOMK
This record is rumored to be a landmark recording in the U.S. It is said to be the FIRST recording where the bass drum was also miked as opposed to just one overhead mike on the drums. That is why the bass drum is so prominant in the over all sound. The Orlons were from Philadelphia, PA. I loved this song back in the 60's.
It's a shame South St. isn't this hip now. Basically,it's an outdoor mall overrun with tourists, loud fucking kids who should be in school and mediocre food(save for Jim's Steaks).
You'll be about an hour away from south street, take 422 all the way east till it dead ends on 76, then veer right once you hit the city, to get on 676, then take the first exit and bang a right till you hit South. Easy as pie, just don't park until you've hit atleast 13th, none of the good stuff happens until 7th or so.
Also, make sure you check out 4th and 5th streets, and Bainbridge, most tourists don't realize they're part of the whole "South Street" district too.
I noe that. When was he on dowop shop??? Anyway my dad had showed me pictures of his family and he pointed him out and showed me this video and I was like oh. he married my aunt. LOL
one of my favorite dance songs ruined by terrible sound on this post.

I was always intrigued by the line "Where do all the hippies meet." In 1962?

Do you by any chance have "Don't Hang Up"?
travis7310 2 years ago
"Don't Hang Up" is the B-side of that 45, so the answers to that would have to be "yes"!
