  • one of my favorite dance songs ruined by terrible sound on this post.

  • one of my favorite songs when I was very little!! grew up in Philly

  • I saw the Orlons in person! They were such a fun group and this song was so hot! It was a Dick Clark tour with many acts, but when the Orlons came out, the crowd went crazy!

  • Oh! Wow! I remember this song from when I was a little kid! I didn't know who sang it then and since then, it's been one of the songs just in my head. Thanks!

  • Next time put in a CD...fool.

  • sounds horrible..maybe its that lighting rod lol

  • @ITALIANJRZYGUYNNJ LOLOLOLOL

  • @TrollinOnMyFace :) WOW SOMEONE ELSE THEN ME KNOWS THE MEANING OF TROLL!! COOL! LOL

  • @ITALIANJRZYGUYNNJ the song is still good, but the quality of the audio is bad. thats what i mean. so yes i agree with you, its the lightning rod lol

  • @TrollinOnMyFace IVE NEVER SEEN THAT BEFORE....LOL

  • @TrollinOnMyFace it is bad audio

  • Co-opted by Cerritos Auto Square for their advertising jingle. I imagine they must have gotten all their copyright-infringement ducks in a row before it began to air.

  • Sounds like it was recorded in the bathroom of a Chevron station.

  • The sound quality is terrible!!!

  • I have this very 45 rpm record from the day! Love it!!!

  • I love this song! I used to shop on South Street back in the day! The sales guy at my favorite shoe store was the sharpest, coolest dresser I ever saw. I was wishing that he could teach me to be that stylish. I thought he was a genius!

  • I was always intrigued by the line "Where do all the hippies meet." In 1962?

  • @RaananVolesPianist The term was around for a long time before the late 1960s and Woodstock. It's jazz slang from the 1940s, and goes along with the use of "hip" to mean "not square" or "in the know" and the word "hipster". There's an entire wikipedia article on the word's origins. Fascinating stuff, go read it.

  • @billd66 Hip is also defined as - being keenly aware of or interested in the newest developments and styles.

  • @stevieplez2

    That is sooo unhip

  • @steveknows62 I f you are too young to remember oldies then SHUT IT UP ! LOL

  • @RaananVolesPianist I was also curious about the term "hippie" being used in 1962. The terms hipster and hippie derive from the word hip, whose origins are unknown. The term hipster was coined by Harry Gibson in 1940. "Hippy Hippy Shake" was a hit song in Australia for Chan Romero in 1959. The Beatles covered it live in 1963. It's on their "Live at the BBC" album.

  • @Jefgg

Harry was hep when it was hip to be hep.

  • There won't be a South Street if they keep "meeting" there.

  • Rosetta Hightower iz my 1st cuz..Jett n Zendell Hightower r brothers..peace & love.

  • SOUTH STREET what a megahit by the one and only ORLONS . 1962 forever for this doo wop rocknroll historian who lived those years. what a group what a song what a string of megahit songs. thanks Orlons. TOMK

  • VERY TINNEY

  • This was the first 45 I bought...I was 11 years old in Detroit at SS Kresge for .99 cents and I still have it....

  • The man who said oh baby is my Uncle. My dad's uncle because his aunt married him! But he is still my uncle

  • This record is rumored to be a landmark recording in the U.S. It is said to be the FIRST recording where the bass drum was also miked as opposed to just one overhead mike on the drums. That is why the bass drum is so prominant in the over all sound. The Orlons were from Philadelphia, PA. I loved this song back in the 60's.

  • Philly doo-wop festival. in August at Penn's Landing. The line up looks like old home week. I'm so gonna be there!

  • Do you by any chance have "Don't Hang Up"?

  • "Don't Hang Up" is the B-side of that 45, so the answers to that would have to be "yes"!

  • Ah, just learnt this song from my supervisor when we had dinner at South Street! A wonderful memory!

  • It's a shame South St. isn't this hip now. Basically,it's an outdoor mall overrun with tourists, loud fucking kids who should be in school and mediocre food(save for Jim's Steaks).

  • What city is South STreet in? I'm clueless, but I LOVE the song.

  • Hi,Frater09. South Street is in Philadelphia.

  • Thanks. I appreciate it. I will be in Philly this summer, actually Spring City, outside of Philly.

If I asked someone where "South Street' is will they know what I'm talking about, or can you give me some better directions.

  • You'll be about an hour away from south street, take 422 all the way east till it dead ends on 76, then veer right once you hit the city, to get on 676, then take the first exit and bang a right till you hit South. Easy as pie, just don't park until you've hit atleast 13th, none of the good stuff happens until 7th or so.

Also, make sure you check out 4th and 5th streets, and Bainbridge, most tourists don't realize they're part of the whole "South Street" district too.

  • There is a South St. in Orlando, Florida.

  • They are in Philadelphia. The man singing is my uncle

  • @EmmyModal562

I always loved that deep bass singer on the Orlons songs.

  • @EmmyModal562 Are you sure? He sounds like my uncle.

And this sound is so bad, it might be Uncle Fudd!

  • @fntime

    Maybe he just got around.

  • @EmmyModal562

I sang bass in "Little Mo' and The Dynaflo's" doo wop group. I modeled my voice to your uncle's! Thank you and him for the inspiration! :)

  • @EmmyModal562 just saw a PBS special that had The Orlons on it. Was one of

them your uncele. can you ask who did the FAR OUT SAX on theirs recordings

  • Philadelphia. The man who sang Oh Baby in the song is my uncle. My dad's uncle because his aunt married him. His name is Steven Caldwell . lolzz

  • He was on the dowop shop on wcbsfm in new york with don k . reid and he said thats his frog voice [ he can also sing normaly of course ] .

  • I noe that. When was he on dowop shop??? Anyway my dad had showed me pictures of his family and he pointed him out and showed me this video and I was like oh. he married my aunt. LOL

  • the stores right off of south street are still true to the original spirit (or so i hear, i'm a little young to judge that)

  • fantastic cool !!

  • I have the LP with this song on it.

  • The flip side was "Them Terrible Boots"!

  • what a tune. nice one! thank you!

  • I have this 45..hahaha..fun stuff...diggin in the (parents) crates...:)
