It's nice to see that even when she was obviously not happy in the video, there were flashes of that lovely smile. I'm glad she defected when she did or she may have become even more unhappy.
"small and round'ish" if you want per-word translation.
We haven't been infested yet by your political correctness obsession. If you're chubby, you're chubby. If you're skinny, you're skinny. Nothing wrong with it, so why hide it under complicated excusing phrases such as "weight challenged" No you are not challenged, you are beautiful and....chubby! :)
There are a couple of girls, Raluca Vinatoru, and Mariana Oboroceanu, who were very promising indeed, but their trainer(not Nadia) had a fight with Octavian Belu and they werent allowed to train at Deva. Very sad, They never got the chance to shine:( Most of the girls end up with career-ending injuries, so never go on to represent their country at World Championships and Olympics, unfortunately:(
of course his conceptions on height aren't totally accurate. You can't always judge how tall a person is by the height they are when they're a child. I was a tall child, but I'm only 5'3 now. You have to have a certain percentage of body fat in order to menstruate, and the rigour these kids go through can often delay the onset. Of course, this was made 21 years ago..
By giving the chance to all kids to practice gymnastics ,selecting competent gymnastic coaches and ,providing good facilities gymnastics teams triumph and everybody is happy. And no one is hurt in
the process. In other countries, kids who are not selec-
ted for gymnastics are put to misery by not
being given a chance. The coaches are paid
peanuts ,don't have the money to open their own gym (with few exceptions) and take
I just think the government only have limited funds, and so are being expeditious, and choosing to invest in kids who are MORE likely to make it as gymnasts seems common sense to me. What is the point in wasting resources(both financial and human) on a kid who isnt going to make the grade. As the narrator says, the top clubs in Romania arent providing leisure facilities: its about achievement, and making the national team.
their private gymnastics clubs in Romania things will change drastically . Those coaches that get to teach levels 1,2,3 won't be concerned if the kids are exceptionally talented. NOW when they get to select gymnasts for the teams they will be picky and get the best ones .They will make money ,and the gymnasts that come back home from the Olympics will bring lots of medals just like it has been always in Romania.
It's not about whether the kids will be able to give something back to the government of Romania, the issue is about letting kids enjoy it whether it is for recreational purposes or for serious competitions. So it's more important to develop self esteem and allow kids to have fun in gymnastics, medals are not everything. Also, gymnasts that are full of medals are many times very unhappy
In Deva, which is what the girls are being tested for, its certainly NOT about leisure and recreational gymnastics: the focus is on achievemet. Maybe there are recreational gymnastics centres in Romania, but this programme is about the girls who are aiming for competitive gymnastics, and representing their country.
I think romanian clubs should teach everyone that wants to learn instead of saying to those that are not chosen they can't practice that sport.
It's cruel to say something like that to a kid. In the U.S. as long as you can pay you can begin a sport, talent is not a factor unless you want to be in a team.
In Romania as far as i know the training taxes are paid by the state and not by the gymnast...And if u don't have skills or discipline it's a waste of time and money to continue..
I think it's a difference in mentality between Romania and USA. In USA it's "no child left behind", in Romania it's "every man/child for himself" :))) we don't like to be politically correct-if someones dumb or slow or fat we tell him-that's the only way he can correct the bad state that he is in. In second grade my teacher said to me that I am dumb 'cause I didn't ever do my homeworks. I didn't do 'em after that either but I learnd hard and in tests I proved her wrong :>
I don't let anyone disrespect me. As far as the teacher is concerned I let her know how I felt about her and her teaching methods prior and after the event :) So what if it is considered verbal abuse? It's not the case to pay a fine if you say ur opinion about someone.
That is correct. The government will pay all the training fees for the gymnast. Thats why the selection process is so austere: its also pretty accurate when you think about the Romanian gymnasts who have been so brilliant over the years: its obviously a strategy which works.
You dont understand the difference in the mentality between a Romanian child and a USA one. Its not cruel at all, it would be more cruel to keep the child in a sport its obviously not suited to.
romanian clubs teach almost everyone. this was exclusively about deva club. over there only the best kids were and are selected. there is the place were the national team trains. they cannot admit everybody, because the state pays for everything. so, obviously, there are limited places. which is why many parents want there children in there. they will sleep, eat, go to school, train, in deva and the parents don't have to pay for anything. it is like a scholarship. not everybody can get it.
it all depends. i know that in romania, parents hand over their children and expect them to be made into champions. if their children are starved, beaten, or yelled at, it's worth it. gymnasts like cojacar, milo, and marinescu have spoken out about the abuse, but nobody seems to care. luckily, belu is no longer involved.
It's nice to see that even when she was obviously not happy in the video, there were flashes of that lovely smile. I'm glad she defected when she did or she may have become even more unhappy.

The Romanians turn out unbelievably tough girls. Nadia was a perfect example. I am sure Bart Connor walks the line every day.

I still think you develop the talent through continous practice. Saying to little kids they have no talent breaks their heart. Kids don't understand
that, they must be given a chance.
don't think anyone no matter how old you are would
want to be told that. Being an education student
in the U.S. I have been taught it's important to
reinforce the positive in kids and not be blunt with
kids.

If your teacher said that to you then that is considered verbal abuse. Don't let any
teacher or authority figure disrespect you
like that. If the Romanian gov.doesn't help people through sports then
it is best to not rely on them for anything
at all.

Here in the western world verbal abuse is not tolerated by any authority figure less from a teacher.
