I lived in an apartment off of Halsted & East Ohio till I was about 5 years old. Even for being so young, I still remember my parents would not drive down Halsted past Division because there were kids from Cabrini that would play in the middle of the street and throw rocks at passing cars.
The true problem I believe is the stigmatism (or common belief) that people below the poverty line are lazy or unintelligent.
I've met homeless and poor people on the street that are extremely intelligent and I believe if given the chance would work extremely hard to make a living. The reasons they don't is because of a failed government welfare system that restricts those who work minimum wage jobs to gain any advancement in their job. Thus, they find no real reason to work extremely hard for little money with no hope of gaining a better lifestyle.
Furthermore, while some of the people in this video may appear "thugish or ruthless," it's apparent that they are still human demonstrated by the second half of the video. They come to together during time of crisis, and still feel sorrow when there is a death of a friend or family. I can't speak for all of those who are in gangs, but I feel that there are many who would leave if they were given an opportunity as stated above.
Most (if not all) hate seeing their friends and family die due to gang violence. Leaving a gang however, usually isn't easy, especially if your blood-related entire family is involved. Some of them are abandoned from their family, and thus they turn to those who offer them safe comfort and protection for their allegiance and commitment. For some, it's the only lifestyle they know and a way of life for them. They know it's hell, but they feel they are stuck with it.
Some of the nicest people I know are ex-gangbangers. Again, it's a stigmatism amongst the middle/upper class that believe those who are in gangs have no feelings or shame in what they do. While some may say that they don't, it's on a facade they put up because they think they'll appear weak if they say they feel sorry for their actions. I've never met a guy who said they were happy to sell drugs to kids, or put a bullet in someones head they've never met (Military or Gangster).
Sorry for the rant. I'm white, born and raised in Chicago, and I love this city (the good, the bad, and the ugly.) I've never been in a gang so I'll never experience those who are what they go through. The only insight I have is from those who were.

I lived in an apartment off of Halsted & East Ohio till I was about 5 years old. Even for being so young, I still remember my parents would not drive down Halsted past Division because there were kids from Cabrini that would play in the middle of the street and throw rocks at passing cars.
The true problem I believe is the stigmatism (or common belief) that people below the poverty line are lazy or unintelligent.

I've met homeless and poor people on the street that are extremely intelligent and I believe if given the chance would work extremely hard to make a living. The reasons they don't is because of a failed government welfare system that restricts those who work minimum wage jobs to gain any advancement in their job. Thus, they find no real reason to work extremely hard for little money with no hope of gaining a better lifestyle.

Furthermore, while some of the people in this video may appear "thugish or ruthless," it's apparent that they are still human demonstrated by the second half of the video. They come to together during time of crisis, and still feel sorrow when there is a death of a friend or family. I can't speak for all of those who are in gangs, but I feel that there are many who would leave if they were given an opportunity as stated above.

Most (if not all) hate seeing their friends and family die due to gang violence. Leaving a gang however, usually isn't easy, especially if your blood-related entire family is involved. Some of them are abandoned from their family, and thus they turn to those who offer them safe comfort and protection for their allegiance and commitment. For some, it's the only lifestyle they know and a way of life for them. They know it's hell, but they feel they are stuck with it.

Some of the nicest people I know are ex-gangbangers. Again, it's a stigmatism amongst the middle/upper class that believe those who are in gangs have no feelings or shame in what they do. While some may say that they don't, it's on a facade they put up because they think they'll appear weak if they say they feel sorry for their actions. I've never met a guy who said they were happy to sell drugs to kids, or put a bullet in someones head they've never met (Military or Gangster).
