This game is back in reprint, I picked up the copies from Barnes and Noble a month ago, and I've had a solid group going for awhile, Built up my own campaign too, still set in the Calixis sector but takes place shortly after the end of the Sabbat World crusade in the Gaunt's Ghosts novels. The acolytes are hunting down remaining Blood Pact officers who fled to the Calixis sector after the war and are trying to setup shot there.
Brilliant game- my only problem is my acolytes are greedy little bastards. They sell everything they can get their hands on, including things they are told to destroy, and they try to loot EVERY. SINGLE. CORPSE. Luckily, this game is A LOT less forgiving than other games, as you can have the Inquisitor vent them out an airlock, or give them an explosive collar. Fun times, and this solves most problems for me...
I've been playing it for almost a year now and I'm also a Game Master. Dark Heresy is a great game if you A. like the Warhammer 40k minitures and B. are a fan of high gore and viceral violence. There are still some kinks in the system and the puplishers didn't do as much research as they should have (pictures and illustrations are misslabeled or used twice to reference completely different things) It should also be noted that in a recent poll, DH is the second highest selling rpg next to D&D.
You can use minis but since most of the characters are not the sort that would take to the battlefield it would be hard, the necromancer and old 40K minis is your best bet.
You could use the various Witch Hunter/Daemon Hunter figures, or you could use the fantastic miniatures from Inquisitor, one of their specialist games.
we've been playing WHFRP a lot through the years (ALOT!) and the new version was just pure blizz and then we have "WH40KRPG" or Dark Heresy. Pretty much agree on your thoughts and oppinions about it, I'm a little sad that they dident come out with a Rogue Trader RPG game first out of the three settinsg they stated they'd do, but DH makes a good setting, premis. Still, I'm hopeing that they'll get to the RT game as I'd love to read more about every day planetary life and travel in the 40K univ.
I love how you bring up the fact that the madjority are so entrenched in D&D hit points that they might have a hard time with a slightly more realistic system of progressive damages. That lil' comment says so much about differences in what I'm used to in p'n'p RPGs and what the norm (U.S./D&D) are.
This game looks like a really fun game. the only problem for me is that where i live i would probably be called a nerd (because everyone would compare it to dnd) and i would never be able to find someone else to play with.
Good question, the Handbook is really a players book with some useful setting information for GMs. It contains alot more guns and armour and off shoots of the careers and a brand new one "sister of battle"
My character is a human defector from Seedworld AFG, an Eldar planet. He's a feral psyker who has a unique, canine appearance, from Eldar genetic experimentation. He came to Scintilla as a Puritan affiliate and has gotten followers over the years.
My idea, if you are lone gaming alone, is to grant 500 XP per module and use either the downloadable modules online or a random encounter/terrain chart derived from the back of book one!
No but there was a skirmish game call confrontation that pre-dated Necromunda. The old Rogue Trader book (the first edition of 40K) was half written as an RPG more than a wargame.
Had to agree with the D&D comment. That whole system is terrible (especially the health). I played that many years ago when I was a kid - don't understand why people still play it. There much better stuff out there. :(
Thats treu, I dont think I made myself clear, its the speed that you become injuried that seemed a little odd but I dont mind the system, I just know people who wont like it.
D&D is gay with the health system. "oh look i just took 80 damage, im perfectly fine!" where dark heresy is " AHH, I took 7 wounds to my hand and it melted off and i just fucking lost it!"
true it is alot more realistic, however you can also argue that we left realism behind when we were playing space marines in power armour... I dont mind it but some people will not enjoy it.
Were did you get it from?

@PaintballNova All good RPG shops should sell this book, failing that certain big name book shops stock it.

Wasn't there a Warrhammer 40K RPG prior to Heresy? When I was a kid, I remember reading a sourcebook for it.

Amazing review, i'll be picking up the core rule book today actually. Always been a big fan of 40k, both the system and especially the setting.
Anyway, great review and looking forward to more!

Thanks for the review cptmachine.
I don't quite get your queasiness with the damage system though.
Progressive injury systems are pretty much standard in RPGs nowadays. I believe that most non-D&D roleplayers are used to this sort of thing by now.
