The max wedge engines 62-64 used wedge shaped cylinder heads which were common to all chrysler b/rb engines, except they had raised intake runners on the cylinder heads, which required a special intake a la the cross ram. The 62 max wedges were 413ci with a 11.0 and 13.5 compression versions, the 63-64 were 426ci with a 11.0 and 12.5 compression version. Unlike 68 s/s hemi cuda's and darts, these bohemoths could be driven street legally. The 64 GTO sucked balls compared to these cars.
@xXCREEKSTARXx I don't really know. They all sound good to me! The only thing I do know is that you can tell a Hemi in the upper RPM banc when they really start to sing!
@OneBadSuperbird Its pretty easy, wedge and hemi refer to the combustion chamber type.... "Max Wedges" were wedge headed engines with dual carm long or short ram intakes. Usually the ones used for drag racing were short rammed. I dont know much about the american cars but I imagine this is a 426 max wedge????
@DeAdiSSu3 no a max wedge was a engine produced by the Chrysler corp. in the early 60's, it was called the max wedge because it was so wide it would barely fit under the hood of any muscle car of the time, and the intake was of a staggered design placeing the two Thermoquad 4bbl's right over the valve covers.
@TTimpreza That's not what I was talking about, someone said a "wedge" motor means the piston is somehow wedge-shaped, and it's not the piston, it's the combustion chamber shape.
@OneBadSuperbird The 413 and 426 Max-Wedge engines were Mopar's superstock engines of choice before the first Hemi (generation 2) engine was available. They were factory built, high compression engines, with a long ram (predecessor to the tunnel ram) intake manifold, large valves, and cast iron headers with factory exhaust cutouts. The *real* Max Wedge cars and parts fetch huge money if you can even find any these days.
@xXCREEKSTARXx - Its a factory offered 413 or 426 cubic inch Dodge or Plymouth engine (Mopar) built in 1962 and for a few years after. It was built to the max by the factory, thus Maxwedge engine. The wedge separates it from the Hemi engine that Chrysler built. It was a killer Super Stock set up back in the day.
@xXCREEKSTARXx Built from 1962-64, these were mopars race motors before the HEMI took over. These had such big valves the cylinder bores were notched for clearance. They had 11:1 to 12:1 compression ratios. The Engine Block used heavy duty castings, bigger oil passages, and were factory stress-relieved. I also remember a lot of them had a cross-ram dual 4-barrel intake system. Old Max wedge motors were cool! I think they made ~425hp and 480lbs of torque.
@xXCREEKSTARXx Bigger ports, cam,2 4bbl carbs (on a cross ram manifold) huge exaust manifolds. It can really breathe compared to a standard wedge engine.Want even more well then go HEMI.
@xXCREEKSTARXx Max Wedge has a wedge shaped combustion chamber like the 440's as opposed to the Hemi Head. The Max wedge was produced from 1962 to 1965. The performance hemis were manufactured 1964 to 1971
@MrCcc2000 You are right that the Hemi has domed pistons but it is more so the cylinder head it's hemispherical combustion chambers that make a Hemi a Hemi
@xXCREEKSTARXx A Max Wedge is a 440 with 2 4bbl carbs on a criss cross type intake manifold. I think the max wedge was also available on the old 392 hemi but could be wrong. I any case they were kicking major ass in the early 60's. Some say the 64 GTO was the original factory muscle car. I disagree and say the 62 Super Stock Dodge should have that title. Google it for more info. Its the same car the Beach Boys sang about in the song Little old Lady from Pasadena. Google if you never heard it.
@matrox I believe the Max Wedge cars all came with Dual Quads At least the ones with 13.5 compression ... The normal wedge cars would have had the 2 bbls The Max Wedge came in the 413 and 426 CI range . They had stages I,II,III,&IV heads The stage 4 heads were rated the same as a Hemi . These motors were no joke The Max Wedge refers to the combustion chamber in conjunction with the stage heads . The 392 Hemi was a Hemispherical chamber So no Max Wedge for the 392 ...

@airgrabber70gtx Thanks for stopping by It's great to see the younger generation getting into the old Mopars! I'm not sure if that's Mr. Aruba or not in the other lane but it may well be. I think Mr. Aruba Mike Dichicco won the points championship at the Chrysler Classics this year. Not trying to take away from the awsomeness that is a factory S/S car, but the driver redlighted on that first run, and appeared to lose as veiwed in the second angle. At least he lost to another Mopar. Looks like a 65 Dodge S/S. I love these cars. It blows my mind that the factories actually built these cars.

Sure, the Quick 16 cars are qucker and faster and put on a great show too but there's a certain magic to the Hemi and Max Wedge cars!
