It was nice to see a shot of the late Queen Mother singing the hymn at 2:19. She more than perhaps anyone in the Royal Family embodied the meaning of this hymn--that of steadfast service to one's country and to God. And now her daughter The Queen is following in her mother's footsteps.
I know that Organist that played at this Wedding. He was a very good Organist too. After he retired, he and his wife came out to Australia and lived out here.
@organisten I am not British, I'm American, my parents were Italian. The reason why a hymn such as this makes one feel proud is that it recalls to mind the special things unique to one's nation that makes one proud of it. In this case it may be the determined resolve with which the British people confronted the Nazi scourge, alone at first. Granted no nation is perfect but a hymn is an appeal to the sou to call up "the better angels of our of our nation".
We sang this great anthem this morning at the Remembrance service. Very poignant, very proper. We shall remember them, we MUST remember them... for if not us, who?
How wonderful is the English cathedral choral tradition of men and boy trebles. The boys are all prodigious talents, I understand, who are trained in the cathedral school and sing the service almost every day of the week.
Not sure why it would make you "proud to be British" - Britain is mentioned nowhere in the lyrics!
At heart, this isn't a patriotic song - it's a Christian hymn about longing for that "other country", the Kingdom whose "ways are ways of faithfulness, and all her paths are peace."
@demonliberal Just because it doesn't explicitly mention the word Britain doesn't mean it is not a patriotic British song, which it is (British composer, British written lyrics). The first and second verses refer to the UK and it's fallen soldiers and then the third refers to heaven.
@niallsi hhhmmm, lol, this song has nothing to do with the Queen but all the british soldiers who died in WW1, English, Scottish, welsh and Irish. So well done on your intelligence level for disregarding the many people who fought for your freedom today.
@2468HOTROD Do not bring down our country down to the abyss where you reside in solitary and disregard our dignity with haste only an unwise fool would proclaim. If you choose to open your mouth with so little respect then you sir, are alone in your unforgiving wisdom.

@Newienew he must have been a good organist; after all, most organists do not need a capital letter.
