Calgary and Edmonton survived the the small market purge in large part due to the fact they played in and won Championships in the 80's...Winnipeg and Quebec did not although Winnipeg might have won in 90 had they held on to upset Edmonton
91...this was really the end of the Oilers dynasty era ...they still had Mess, Kurri ,Lowe, Simpson, Tikkanen, Fuhr ,Graves etc..but by 91 without Gretzky(and age and injuries) the other teams had caught up to them BUT it was still a hell of a run ...still the best run in the last 21yrs (although the Bowman led Wings had a great run in the 2000's) ...the win over Calgary in the playoffs that yr was really the last big moment of that era . by 92 the team would be nothing like the team from 90
Aaannd, the Flames missed the playoffs, never won a series again until 2004 and Risebrough got canned in 1995 after several major player losses along the way. Losing Fletcher and replacing him with an inexperienced Risebrough, only 38 at the time, was a really stupid move by Flames ownership.
Flames really had a shot at having a team that could have dominated for a number of years...couldnt or didnt want to hang on to their core players after winning the cup

@ldhorricks Even the few they hung to couldn't guide a team to a series win since '89.

hockey is a business, and unfortunately the more of a business it becomes, the less of a game it becomes.

@canucker20 It's been that way ever since Gretzky got traded to L.A. in '88.

"Can the smaller teams...survive 10 years from now?"
Now, THAT was prophetic, back in 1991.

@AlbertaGamer Calgary had barely survived early last decade.I still remember the rally downtown to save the Flames 4 years before their Red Mile run.
