@Jeffyboy849 :) Nidan is my kata. I was an orange belt for a year because of finding a new school that I actually liked, and I can do nidan like there is no tomorrow
@Jeffyboy849 and! a lot of the moves are very different. My friend brent does shorin ryu and we do the katas almost 100% similiar. :) people always mess up, no one is perfect. Or maybe his sensei taught it to him that way..
actually the only person i've seen do it semmetrical was george dillman. and i imagine seiyu oyata as well, though ive never seen it. dillman also stays in a horse stance when doing his gedan barai, and doesn't go into zenkutsu.
in the end i don't think it really matters much you know what i mean, its still the same kata, done with an individuals personal preference (the sensei) i dont believe the kata are as sacred as some, they were created with techniques, to teach those techniques. and they still serve that purpose.
Sorry my friend.. he is correct. there's no gedan barai to left as the first move in Shorin Ryu.. And u must know Itosu s Kata practiced unchanged in Shorin ryu.. Just see any Kobayashi style.. I think it's same on other Shorin systems like Matsubayashi or Okinawa Karate.. Thnks
I will look into it. Just something about his kata does not seem right to me. I am not one to slam others unless I see something poorly executed. Thanks for the heads up! OSU!
Yea it was different for me too. I was taught that the first two heads were open hand, with a kia at the end (closed hand third block). Some of the directions were diff too. I was taught Shorin Ryu.
That was a different Pinan Nidan than what I was taught. For instance, I was taught that the series of 3 headblocks and 3 punches should all be at the same speed. I was taught using Wado-ru though.
Lineage is dentokan?

There are many different versions of pinan/heian kata. The orginal version by Itosu had downward block on both sides of the body.

how do you know this? just asking.

Why wouldn't it? When you look at all the pinan/heian kata, the opening moves are symmetrical.
I also know this because of various books and research papers say so.

This guy is sloppy. His movements are not well executed and he missed a gedan barai.

this is a learning video, and he's not sloppy
