I guess I'm doing pretty well, but I'm on year 2 of studying. My best advice is just listen as much as possible. And it helps if it's something you like. Try to find vids with japanese subs, and just go through and repeat what they say. Eventually you'll be rolling off things like "yoroshiku onegaishimasu" with ease, and good pronunciation :D. This is yet another example as to how far Japan has got americanized in quite a wrong way. People here in Japan are getting more and more aware of the traditional racial slurs in the US, which they think is so popular over the states as to not offense any minorities. I'm Canadian and I live in Japan, a Gaijin if you will, and as such, I fail to see why people are getting so riled up about this commercial being offensive toward Gaijin. This is yet another example as to how far Japan has got americanized in quite a wrong way. People here in Japan are getting more and more aware of the traditional racial slurs in the US, which they think is so popular over the states as to not offense any minorities. Ironically enough, Mcdonalds was the first in Japan to dare do this silly counterback toward its own home country.

One joke that would be missed by non-japanese speakers is at 1:05 when he says "tonari no kyaku wa yoku kaki kuu kyaku da". This is a well known tongue twister. Mr. James at first faltered out this sentence but for the second time he is like "oh i got it" and read out the sentense so smoothly.

If Macdonalds were to do this in the UK, showing a Japanese stereotype struggling to learn English with terrible pronunciation it would be genuinely shocking.
