  • I was homschooled all the way through high school. I was actively involved my church youth group's A/V team and worship team. I developed close relationship through that. Even so, there were some social skills I had to build when I got to college. But, personally, this small factor is far outweighed by the many positives homeschooling has. There are pros and cons to everything. The key is seeing where the pros outweigh the cons.

  • i've been to public school all my life, and it did'nt really help me that much. i have against the public school system but, it is a GOVERMENT school where they brainwash kids to be GOVERNMENT DEPENDENT.

  • i agree, i wish i was homeschool, although in Proverbs 22:6 train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.

  • :D Homeschooled and proud! :)

  • As a homeschooling mom I am finding that everything you have presented to be totally true. My kids are very social and anyone who meets them are totally surprised to learn they have not every been to a public school.

  • People also don't realize that being home schooled doesn't mean it's what ever your parents give you to do for school work. I was home schooled through a school registered by the state of Florida, which means that school gives the school work and the set minimum requirements for promotion, and I had to also go there to do all state mandatory test such as FCAT. You learn everything and more in Home school but I do admit it's pretty lonely.

  • I have a bit of trouble believing some of this. Though I'm not putting down your research and I have not done any research on it.

  • @133caboose I'm sorry you are having problems with it. All these facts are from research studies done. I have been homeschooling my own children and own a large HS group, as well for years now, and I can see it every time I look at them. Most graduate at age 15/16 and then go onto college to have their associates by age 18....HS children are taught how to learn, build upon and retain, not how to memorize, test and dump the information.like public school children.

  • @133caboose Perhaps you should do some research yourself. Facts are, it's not home schooled students who are bringing guns to schools and going on murderous rampages. They aren't the ones filling the jails and prisons with thieves, junkies, prostitutes, child molesters, and murders. In fact, the vast majority of criminals were educated in public schools. You don't find home educated students in gangs, on drugs, on welfare. You find them volunteering, apprenticing, & acing college entrance exams.

  • @lbhowner2

My comment was placed so long ago...look I go to a public school. The people you're referring to are a very small percentage. It's not like every single public school kid are killing people. Besides most of those children attend an inner city school. It's also based on the parents own ethic, and the child's own personality. Not everyone's going to react the same way in the same environment. Also I wouldn't be surprised if your children were a small percentage.

  • Thanks! this video gave me an idea of how I should make my presentation for this same class at WGU. Plus I am planning on homeschooling my daughter, so the topic fit well. Yes home school children are socialized and when they get to college level, they are usually more intelligent and level headed than their peers. They are usually more behaved as well.

  • home shcool rocks :)

  • I went to public school, and never had any friends there. I was all alone in a huge school with plenty of kids all around me. Why? I was from New York and had a thick New York accent, and we moved to the Midwest. I was made fun of, and ostracized in every way possible. I'm sorry you feel so alone - but there are plenty of kids in public school that feel the same way. When you reach your 20's, none of it will matter anyhow! I homeschool my kids and we all love it. I'm sorry for your situation.

  • Socialization? My youngest is already in a professional theater (not exactly a shrinking violet). My oldest wants to be a filmmaker and has been accepted to two film schools. They are 13 and 15! They can look an adult in the eye and talk about everything from CERN's latest ATLAS project to the newest exhibit at the Art Institute. When I was in high school, I was so shy I could barely put two words together. Lots of public school kids have no social skills at all. It's wrong to generalize!

  • I for one love school and love getting up everyday and having to interact with people I may or may not like on a daily basis. I don't care if people say there are more benefits to homeschooling because fuck that I am never being homeschooled. There is nothing wrong with being homeschooled but there is also nothing wrong with being public schooled.

  • @112yourface Your argument would be more persuasive if you didnt have to use offensive language to make your point. The only thing I took away from your comment is that you need to learn a wider vocabulary to be able to better make your point.

  • Does anyone else find it odd that the primary argument used to defeat home schooling is the argument of "social inadequacy"? There is no disputing the ability of these children to perform any task of which they are inclined. At numerous workplaces you have the social cliques that get along together and are the best of buddies while they are running the company into the ground whereas the so-called "socially inept weirdo" is actually keeping the company afloat. I speak from experience.

  • I disagree with the solution of homeschool kids getting together for dances, etc. Homeschool kids lack vast social skills and simply getting more kids together who also lack those skills doesn't build those skills.

  • @danielc0307 I laugh at this and find you have not been to a Homeschool group event. HS kids have also been shown in empirical studies to have better social skills, more polite, better manners and are emotionally more prepared for the adult world. Please look at the research or attend an event. You will find all sorts in any environment..from shy to outgoing, from awkward to easy going, but EVERY study shows how HSed children have an advantage in academics, socialization, and in everyday life.

  • @celticvixn I'm still not sure. I went to school with a few kids that HS'd K-8 then came to our high school. It was pretty painful to see the differences. Just curious... Is there a tax break if you home school?

  • @danielc0307 no tax breaks. No financial benefit. And just because you knew those few kids, does not mean all HSed kids are like that. Out of the over 2 million kids HSed , there are all kinds! Does this mean that I can blame public school for the rude, foul mouthed 6 year old that lives down the street from me? Each child is different and depends on what they were exposed to, and how they were raised. It takes all types to make up public, private, magnet and homeschool kids.

  • @celticvixn totally agree with you!!! :)

  • @danielc0307 Homeschooled kids are just like every other kid. For every 'awkward' HS kid, I can point out 10 awkward public schoolers! Some homeschoolers are very outgoing - just like the kids in public school. Some are shy and reticent - just like kids in public school! Try not to generalize too much. We are all different, and that difference is what makes life fun!

  • @danielc0307 Home schooled kids lack social skills?? My 2 sons are home schooled & they have no problem with socialising or social skills whatsoever! School isnt the only place to socialise! Blimey what would the world do without schools!!!

  • I was homeschooled through 8th grade. This year (I'm a Freshman) I am going to a private school, and when I told my teachers I was homeschooled they couldn't believe it because I'm so socially normal.

  • thanks,_for_this.I'm_in_6th_grade_and_about_to_be_home-schooled.I_needed_this_boost_of_hope.__:)

  • @JonnyForsberg You profile shows you are 17. 8th grade?

  • Both of my boys have been homeschooled, my oldest went into government school for fourth grade. He is an A student and went on to win school spellling bee and represent county. He's also been in baseball and since he was 4 years old and has many friends from that. We were part of a homeschool group and enjoyed many field trips and park days with the many friends we made there and even though we are currently attending govt school, we still love our home school friends! And homeschooling!

  • @JonnyForsberg I'm sorry to hear this. I have found tho that you are not the norm in homeschooling communities...I have to question if YOU have even tried to go out and join anything or tried to make friends. It's up to you what you want to make of your life. I hope that you try to just get out there and see that there are LOTS of great kids who are home schooled and would love to make a new friend.

  • I'm homeschooled, and I love getting together with my homeschooled friends. The only difference between us and the public-schoolers is that we get to bring guns and knives to school! On recess on Wednessdays, my Dad takes me to the gun club and we shoot a round of Skeet. (Oh, by the way, I also socialize with the other hunters and shooters there, too.)

  • @Eefstingflyboy Hmm... I seem to notice that your spelling, grammer, punctuation, and articulation as far as I can tell, are impeccable. I wonder why?

  • *smile* This was based on my research paper. I found that home educated children exceeded public school children in social skills, academics and are even sought after by Ivy league colleges. I was amazed at just how much better off (a lot) of home school kids were!

  • @celticvixn I believe it. My older son who is now in 5th grade govt school is being dummed down and made to wait for others to catch up. He has been placed with a boy who has a bad attitude and doesnt want to excel and now is rubbing off on my dear son. I am trying to teach him to be a leader when it comes to attitudes and his teachers tell me he is, but I am again contemplating home school. Learn to be an adult from an adult...usually works! Great video!

  • @celticvixn I think the majority of home schooled children exceed school levels on my findings.I agree with what you are saying! My 10 year old is working at ks3 when this is aimed at 11-14 year olds!

  • Thanks for sharing this is great. I should show this to the moms who ask me "Don't you worry about your childs socialization?" While we are both waiting on our children to finish there gymnastics class. LOL!
