I can say with great confidence and from personal experience that doing this kind of dancing is better than any anti depressant for boosting your mood.
Thank you MaynardCat! What an amazing dance & equally amazing group of dancers! Do you happen to know if they are a company? I'd love to see other stuff by them.
If everyone still did those dances today all of the fitness centers would have to go out of business. They make it look so easy but just try to do it.
I would really like to know the name of the group that did that and if they have any other videos, they are superior.
A dance, popular in the 1920s is interpreted by TV studio dancers in the '50s. And, now, that performance is over 50 years old. If we interpret the term "oral history" as being "non-textural history", then clips like this are becoming a modern version of oral history. Thanks, MaynardCat.
Awesome and how fun to watch! There is a scene in the movie Don't Knock the Rock where they do a very long Charleston; the music is very much the same and the dancing is near-identical!
@75capriceconvertible Yes, but that whole performance from "DKTR" is not a charleston performance but a 1920s performance. Only one couple is doing the charleston in that routine. The rest are doing several different 1920s dances, like the black bottom, varsity drag, and the raccoon. great video though. i love it.
@thelonelyslayer point taken, I understand what you mean. It's kind of like generic terms for things; i.e. all tissues are "Kleenex" and all puddings are called "Jello" - as with dance styles from the 40s, they are all referred to as 'Big Band' and from the 50s all referred to as "jive" even if it's a Lindy Hop or West Coast Swing. Still all are very enjoyable!
@75capriceconvertible but the Charleston in itself is both the name of both a paritcular song and dance. the other dances showcased in the "DKTR" video are completely different and are accompanied by completely different songs of the same name. ha. The Charleston song isn't even used in the routine. But i do get what you're trying to say. Either way, i really do love that video. It's so fun to watch.

They call it Black Bottom
A new twister
It's sure got 'em
And oh, sister
You shake your hips and do a raggedy trot -
Hot!
Old fellows with lumbago
And young fellows, away they go
They jump right in and give it all that they've got!

Why is it called varsity drag if the whole song was the black bottom?
