I was looking for things from 1956 to put on a dvd for my daughter, shes 22 now. I was born in 56 and wanted to give her something that documented that time. Hoe you dont mind I used one part of your delightful trip on my dvd. It was your footage of Dumbo. I wasnt there until 1959 but they coudnt get me off dumbo. I threw such a fit that the operator just said, " its okay, just leave him on, he'll need a nap soon..lol Try that in todays society. I loved your film and narration.
my favrorite ride in in the park..you could see it in the day, and also at night where all the houses are lighted it was agreat ride....I confess that one day, I spent one night on Tom Sawers island and spent the night on the island and the next day I was cleared it was a big deal if you spent the night6 on tom's island..I camped out by the burning cabin...it was a rite of passage..I will never forget that night..it was great....
wow those films were all so good who knew scotch tape could do so much more than just fix things i watched all of the videos and was hooked the whole time crazy how much disney land has changed since it opened from today thanks yensidnaf for posting all of these amazing films!!!!!
Thank you for posting this. A GREAT video. Oops, wait!! "FILM", it WAS originally a film . The quality is fantastic considering how long ago it was shot. As of 2011 it is 55 YEARS OLD!!! Wow. More than half a CENTURY! Keeping in mind Mr. Barstow did the "voice-over" 39 years later. So let's see: Filmed in 1956, voice-over added 1995. What fun. Is it my imagination or does it seem like those were kicked-back days and life was so much simpler then. Maybe not but it certainly seems that way. (=
I join 'paulatubie' in thanking Frank Rich for bringing this film to our attention. I would have been Danny's age when this was made. Growing up in a suburb of Toronto, we didn't get out to Callifornia, but I have similiar memories of spring break road trips to Florida, where our family took in the delights of American theme parks on our fun packed journey south. Thanks for bringing back the memories.
Thank you so much f..or posting this video, and thanks to frank Rich for directing attention to it in the New York Times. I love Robbins Barstows humor and creativity right up to the end with the tape spelling out "The End". And wife Meg deserves credit for going along with it all...seems she lugged a lot of sandwiches in that magical bag and I'm sure all the changes of hats didn't just float along after the family. It would be cute to hear how the kids did and see before & after pics.
@NewYorkFlavour ---no. no, it wasn't. not unless you were already caucasian. If you were African-American and in most of the rest of the country, as one example, it was anything but like this. or simple. or innocent, frankly. Same if you were Hispanic. Or gay. or on and on.
I didn't even know this movie existed until I read about it in Frank Rich's column in the New York Times. What a classic piece of American nostalgia it is! Thanks, Robbins Barstow, for recording your family's dream vacation so perfectly and capturing a slice of Americana as nostaigic and vanished to us today as "Main Street USA" was to your family back then!
What a wonderful document of Americana in its purest form! Not only Disneyland and other attractions, but the sweet depiction of family life in the 1950s. What a perfect time capsule! Robbins Barstow captured an era at its sunniest in glorious Kodachrome, and it's great that he is sharing this with the world. Thank you!
to dw49dave, and to all Disneyland Dream viewers. Steve Martin saw my grandfather's movie and actually spotted himself in the home movie Disneyland Dream!!! He's only in their a second, but he's the boy in the bowler hat selling pamphlets. Thank you for all your positive responses, my grandfather is extremely honored.
What a fantastic thing to share with the world! My thanks to Robbins and the Barstow family for going through this effort. This is true American history!
Hello, I'm so glad all of you like the video. My name is Suzanna Barstow Cooper. My grandfather, Robbins Barstow was the man who made the video. He is the one narrorating the video. I am so glad that his work is being well appreciated. Robbins is 90 years old and lives in Connecticut. Thank you for watching his home movies.
I enjoyed this piece of history. Great video and narration. What memories this family must of had to of experienced this dream of a lifetime. A great conversational piece eched in their minds.
What a trip back in the time machine! Did you know that it's possible, if not likely, that your son purchased his lariat in Frontierland from the comedian Steve Martin? He started his 'career' at Disneyland when it opened, and spent some of his early days learining how to do rope tricks and helping to sell lariats out of the store there.
Thanks for the love you treated this with. I enjoyed taking this trip with you, to my favorite place on earth.
its amazing seeing how everything changed so much, from catalina island, knotts berry farm, and universal studios, and of course Disneyland... Only 50 years later!

Vintage Disneyland looks so cool! My family went to Disneyworld about 12 years ago, and I remember it mainly as a series of 2 hour line waits. :-(

@helmfer It was long before "Super Sized" meals and everything loaded with high fructose corn syrup.

What a fascinating video, filled with wonderful humanity.
In most shots the entire family is shown in the film. Did someone (perhaps from the local newspaper) accompany the family on this adventure?

@NewYorkFlavour No, this was a few years after the Korean War. Two years after Brown vs. Board of Education. Years before the Civil Rights movement.
