We have two traps at work, we bought back in 2009, and both are still in use, we did not buy the refill solution because we have figured out that in spring and early summer things like meat, vinegar mix and a little honey or syrup works at catching yellow jackets and european hornets. Right now, August, we are using a small amount of vinegar with syrup/honey to catch both of the above-have caught this summer about 6 dozen yellow jackets and several dozen european hornets.
Yellowjackets in the ground. Bought a reusable WHY trap with high expectations. Caught about 10 paper wasps, top chamber, maybe 6 yellowjackets, over 5 days. Not great results.
I've tried lots of other homemade traps from YouTube and the web, each with even more paltry results. Honey, fruit juice, jam, pop, sugar water... NOTHING.
Late in the yr but I may TRY bacon in a jar. Or just call an exterminator. Already stung.
I've found a better way to use this product. The design of the trap is great - bugs go in - they don't get out. I've found that instead of using the magic potion that comes with the product - these bugs are motivated by sweet - I filled my trap with sweet tea. It's be a little over 24 hours and there must be 60 yellow jackets in there. Amazing!!! Now I'll just wait for the tea to evaporate and the bugs to die. I'm sure anything with sugar in it would work. I haven't gotten any other bugs either.
Useless. Hung it up 5-6 days ago and I watch the wasps fly right past it and hang out in the wall within a foot of it and it has caught none of them.
Just hung mine up - I seem to be infested with paper wasps and have had the exterminator out twice but they come back and keep building more nests. I'm interested to see what I'll catch now I've read the comments. I bought it because the store was sold out of other traps. Once I got to the part in the instructions about emptying the trap I was so over it! It's great it is reusable but I have a terrible phobia linked to wasps/bees/hornets. Oh well. I hope I catch something good!
the written directions in the box said to add some dishwashing liquid. the video doesn't say to do that... I have trapped NOTHING in 3 weeks and the water is almost gone... any tips??
This trap does work-we placed two of them at a location near the picnic area at our park and we had to empty the two every other day they were so loaded with both yellow jackets(over a 1000 or more caught, about several hundred european hornets also caught), throw in some bald face hornets, flies and we removed quite a lot of pests from the picnic grounds-we are putting them up again this summer.
Works pretty well here in Indianapolis. It would great if the trap didn't have to be "recharged" every couple of weeks. I would probably pay more for a 60-day version.
But it's easy to set up and after you place it outside you'll wish it was bigger, because it fills up fast.
After 2 weeks our trap has caught one moth. Very disappointed. My son doesn't want to be outside (he got stung a couple times last summer) because of all the wasps in our yard. Was really hoping this would work!
@myfairlady2511 What have the daytime temps been in your location? Have you seen many wasps, hornets or yellowjacket queens out where you are? Spring weather can be erratic, so for best results the daytime highs need to be at or above 60 degrees Fahrenheit consistently, without chance of frost at night, for the trap to work best. Please give it a little more time... it DOES work!
@WhyRescue High 70s to low 80s (Tennessee). There are so many wasps this year that the local stores are sold out of wasp spray. I bought a refill at the same time I got the trap so I will see what happens over the next couple weeks....
I purchased TWO of these WHY traps @ $15 each and have had NO RESULTS. I have yet to catch anything. I have left a voice message at the phone number listed on the package but no call back. ANY HELP or suggestions ? I even moved the trap after a week in one spot to another spot. still no results. have not caught even ONE wasp or yellow jacket.
First - it does work - you have to be smart with it and forget about the twisty ties, just use string. My question though is: what is the best way to clean it? I am worried that a few of the wasps would be still alive when I open it and also leaving a mess where the attractant will be out in the open and attract bees with no trap. So dropping it in a bucket of water outside to make sure they are dead doesn't seem like a great idea and I ain't going to bring it inside!
@driven2sin Make sure insects are dead before emptying -- to be sure, set it directly in the hot sun for several hours and that should do it. To empty the bottom chamber, unscrew the bottom cap, take the cone out and dump the dead insects into the trash. To empty the top chamber, unscrew the lid and pour the contents into the trash or onto the ground. If it's beyond the two week time period, the scent will no longer be attractive to the insects.
@mang182 It sounds like you have more yellowjackets than paper wasps in your yard. Some people have found our Yellowjacket Trap to work better if they do not have the other species of insects. I'm glad you found it useful.
It's junk! The WHY yellowjacket/wasp trap is a total waste of money. Today when a european wasp landed on the WHY trap I really thought it would work, to my surprise the wasp stood on the trap for about 10 seconds then the wasp just flew away never to return.
So far the only tap that Rescue markets that works is the fly trap. So far the useless trap cost me $14, $4 of gas and 2 hours of my time. For 2$and one hour of time I could have eradicated all my european paper wasps nests.
Since I posted this comment, I have talked to a lot of people who have returned the product. Unfortunately, the WHY product failed to perform. Everyone gave up and used a spray to kill the wasps in the early morning. The spray cost less than two dollars was immediately effective.
The product apparently works only when demonstrated by Rescue personnel, so apparently you work for the Rescue company. In the real world, this product does not work.
@vertdriver I'm sorry we did not respond to you sooner, and that the WHY Trap did not meet your expectations. Many customers have been happy with this product. Our Customer Service Department may have some ideas to help you get better results this year if you would like to give them a call to discuss your experience. (Toll free 1-800-666-6766).
This is a difficult trap to use. I have dropped it a few times, the twisty wire slips out of my hand. I don't know if the watery attractant has mixed with the capsule attractant, although most of the watery attractant spilled into the ground when I dropped it. Also, I didn't know I was supposed to save the cotton wool from the bottom, it went into the trash with the other goop. So then I used a cotton cosmetic pad instead when I had to reload the attractant. It is very annoying to use.
I'm sorry to hear you've had difficulty in setting it up. I hope it worked well for you otherwise in catching the insects. We'd like to hear a follow-up report.
location). This was sprayed by the maintenance here at our apartment complex almost a week ago. Will that have any affect on the trap's effectiveness, either? Thanks for your help!
Thank you for buying our WHY Trap! Hanging it against the railing should not have any negative impact on its effectiveness, nor should the fact that the nest below was sprayed. Let us know what kind of results you get.
Hello, Stephanie. I just bought the WHY Trap today and set it up out on my terrace where we've had a problem with lots of wasps (or hornets or yellowjackets, I can't tell). I have a question though. Where I hung it up, it is leaning against the railing, so it is at a somewhat angled position. Will this affect the effectiveness of the trap? We live in an apartment, so we don't have any trees that we can hang it from. Also, there was a nest under the terrace railing (opposite side of the trap...
Stephanie here. Right now, only the queens are out and the populations are small. If the weather is cool, sometimes a wasp can survive long enough to figure the way back out. When the weather gets warmer as the season progresses, you should have more of a catch in the WHY Trap. We are interested in helping you have a good experience with this product, so please keep in touch with us.
This is very true. The hot sunny days work best and if you have a wooden fence (like around a pool) that is the best since they are chomping on your fence all summer using it to make their nest. I wish there was a way to seal wood with something that keeps them away or kills them
Stephanie did a good job but so far the WHY TRAP has done a terrible job. One wasp captured, one wasp escaped. Total wasps caught and deceased = 0. Number of wasps caught and killed in my house today = 1.

I have had two traps up for many days now and one of them caught a moth. That's it.
I am taking them back to Lowe's and demanding a refund.

The other yellow jacket trap they sell works way better, it caught tons of them in my backyard.
