He can mess up his chords temporarily if he does that, and have a really raspy encore or rest of show. Though he usually goes all the way there is a risk especially if you have not performed the song in a while.

This was the first show after 9/11. At Notre Dame on Oct. 10, 2001. It wa sa bit subdued, but all the more pwerful a perfomrance for that. Especailly at a time when lots of bands were cancelling shows out of fear of Muslim terrorists.

I love this version!!! Bono's subtle vocals make this a very touching rendition of the song. A lot of the Bad performances between 1997-2001 have this style to it and I think it was a very special, unappreciated era!!

You were right. I checked 7 different lyrics sites and they all say "Could". If you listen to the way he pauses after he says it, it's pretty clear he's saying "If I could, through myself, set your spirit free"...which makes perfect sense. He also doesn't say "to" before "set your spirit free", and I've heard numerous versions of this song. You were right the first time.

In any case, phenomenal song. Probably their best, and my personal favorite of theirs.
