The US doesn't really count anyway. They recruited Wernher von Braun, the man who created the V2 missile that bombed the UK and could have Nuked America, to help them in the space race. He was the creator of the SATURN 5 rocket that put the first Americans on the moon. The USA would have achieved nothing without the help of Nazi scientists and technology. Anyway if NAZI Germany had won the war we may already be on mars by now. Sad but true.
@PlaneAU Actually, Adolf Hitler had very little interest in the space program aside from using it to attack his enemies. He had more of an interest in the concentration camps, and world domination. I find it difficult to believe that after he dominated the rest of the world, he would have continued the space program, beyond building satellites to watch the activity going on, on the surface.
Technically the pod races were not a space race. They were held on a planet, not it space. That planet may not have been Earth, and the film as a whole may have had stuff happen in space, but the pod races were down on the planet.
Why even compare the two? The USSR paved the way of space travel by sending the first things into space, Which is an amazing feat! But the U.S. just happened to beat them to the moon which was not staged. All in all they are both great space programs which you can't even compare. It's like trying to compare Coke and Pepsi. There is no winner.
USSR did pretty much everything first, (barring the moon landing that was said to be staged), and they still have a decent space program so.....the answer is obvious USSR would win over NASA any day.
I don't get why there are soo many dislikes I love brad and Liam woto is amazing ! And they are such nice and funny people !! It was great meeting them last weekend wish I had talked to you lot more but was kinda nervous ! :/
ohh... come on! Everyone know that USA and USSR is a hidden allies... And wtf! Kennedy is direct evidence. Cold war is just a spectacle to maintain the illusion of separation..
During the space race, the US started research to create a pen which could write in space. After millions of dollars was spend, they have finally developed the pen. The Russians used a pencil.
@themanclaw2 That may be so but it is because of these technologies that NASA is so profitable of an organization. Every penny spent on NASA has a $1 return from future patents, and other great things. I won't say NASA is perfect but they're not as bad as what the ignorant keeps claiming them to be. Also this video sucks.
@themanclaw2 The pen was not developed by NASA. It was developed for scuba divers to write underwater. NASA spent no money developing it. At first NASA used pencils, but when the leads broke they floated around and caused a safety hazard. So NASA used the scuba diving pen. Source: Mythbusters
@themanclaw2 Why is it that people still believe this? NASA and the USSR both used grease pencils in space, until Fisher Pen company sold them the so-called space-[ens. After which, both parties used it.
@themanclaw2 This is not only a very old and overused joke.. but it is also inaccurate. A pencil would be very dangerous in space, a piece of lead could break and poke someones eye out with the zero-gravity. A company (can't remember the name right now) made a space utensil which both parties used, and also marketed to the public as a space pen. They sold in great numbers.
@themanclaw2 In the late 1960s, NASA tried to write in space but couldn't. They decided to work with science to create a pen that could write upside down, in zero gravity, on walls, etc. After spending $4.3 million, they finally achieved their goal. The Russians used a pencil.
@themanclaw2 but a pencil is a potent killer in microgravity. it will break and then the graphite will float around in microgravity and maybe someone inhales it and then that small tip goes in the body and chokes the astronaut or maybe goes in a circuit board and ruin it, so I would say russians were dumb to use a pencil, i mean nothing against russia or russians but then if they really used a pencil, it was foolish of them

@themanclaw2 You know that's incorrect? Small bits of graphite would have ruined the onboard circuits. Nice to know clichés never die, regardless of their truthfulness.
@themanclaw2 The problem with a pencil is when it breaks in micro-gravity the microscopic graphite fragments will fly in your eyes, your lungs, your computer, and everywhere else.
I don't have watch this video know the answer is obvious the USSR is the winner. They launched the first object into space, the first living thing, the first human and the first female. And they also were the first who putted a object in orbit arround the moon and also placed the first man-made object on the moon.
@Nielsblog The United States had the first dedicated scientific satellite, the first communications satellite, the first weather satellite, the first PILOTED human spacecraft, the first true orbital rendezvous, the first space docking, the first Mars flybys/orbiters/landers, the first humans in deep space, the first humans on another celestial body, the first probes to the outer solar system, and the first objects to reach escape velocity of the Sun.
@Nielsblog It dosent matter how far along your are in the race, it matters who crosses the finish line first. Also the only reason the USSR had such good progress was due to their barbaric and unsafe methods.
The US doesn't really count anyway. They recruited Wernher von Braun, the man who created the V2 missile that bombed the UK and could have Nuked America, to help them in the space race.
