  • So grateful for this posting. Very very beautiful

  • Dravidian culture existed all the way up to present day Afghanistan. There was no such thing as South Indian those days because the carnatic culture covered entire Indian Subcontinent. Now it has been pushed into the South of India.

  • i think what you are saying is completely wrong. there is no mid-eastern influence on indian music. if at all there is some minor persian influence. the format for hindustani till the late 17th century was Dhrupad. tansen was a dhrupad singer. dhrupad is very similiar in structure to ragam-tanam -pallavi in format. the present day khyal music was developed more in the 18th century especially under the mughal ruler mohd. shsh rangeeele. so stop posting these wierd stories about dravidian etc.

  • the traditional format for carnatic music was also ragam-tanam-pallavi in its glory days. not this useless kriti singing that we indulge in nowdays. its meaningless and unappealing.this kriti singing nonsense also came only in the 20th and 19th century. what with the trinity(dikshitar, thyagaraja and syama sastri) being just less than 2 centuries old. allmost all kritis are composed by them.

  • Well, i wont claim to know history with 100%. But i can only say what i feel based on talking to alot of people and reading alot of texts.

Take the tabla for instance. It is a very recent drum that was created during the islamic rule of India.

  • You are taling something nobody in this world has proven, I mean I know you want be proud of , so you are in the imagination. There was no such thing, dravidian and Aryan, Aryan Invasion is not a theory, it's a hypothesis, in fact Vedas were parts of India, it is a theory, and Indian Music comes from that time, as I said Hindustani music got changed during 1200 AD and after because Islamic influence, that's it. Don't be an idiot

  • What am i proud of? Nothing! I simply point out what i have heard. You are correct. I cant prove anything but neither can you.

Vedas is a very complicated issue. Many theories about who created, when it was created, where it was created, ho wit was created. But at the end of the day nobody knows. There are even priests in India who say the ancient Indian writings originate on an ancient continent called Lemuria (which is supposed to be under the sea now)

  • Come on, don't stretch now. What are you saying now is totally a different issue and it is controversy. But hinduntani and carnatic music were and are parts of Vedas, this is known from the books. Hindustani music changed during Mughal times, this is also proven. Don't argue on this issue. You can argue on Aryan Invasion, but there is no proof for this, all most all logical proofs say vedas were created in India, anyway still you can argue if you want,

  • but there is no way to say hindustani music was created from southern element and islamic melody. This is too funny and give me a single reference to support this if you can.

  • one should also note that south india's premiere dance form, Bharatanatyam's theory comes directly from rishi bharath's natyashastra which going by aryan theory was an aryan invader. while i agree genetically there are some differences between north and south india, i think the aryan invasion as a single epochal event in history is very wierd. that being said, definitely the shakas, the yeuchi's the yavanas(greeks) the persians, afghans etc did come into india in waves.

  • The aryan invasion theory' is controversial.

  • he tried to skeap like a Thambi, sir if u don't mind little will be nice ok ? :) :) funny.

but he said in north india, no solo portion for instruments but i did it and i saw it too, may be it was not tradition and people changed it to make it a difference

  • Hindustani music was created by taking elements of Carnatic south Indian structure and the melody of Islamic middle eastern music.

  • Nope, Hindustani classical music directly comes from Music of Veda, if you go through the texts you will find. Simple example is raag malkauns. During Mughal, hindustani music got a different shape because of Muslim influence, but it was not created by south indian and islamic melody. Carnatic music is not older than Hindustani music, both have their roots in Veda and Other Poorans.

  • Hindustani music is a product of invaders into India. The origins of the vedas are not known. If you look at ancient Dravidian culture they have been around much much longer. India was a land of dark skinned people like africa. All these fair skinned people are descendants of invaders. The invaders took the mathematics and structure (diluted it) and combined it with melodies from the middleast. That is how you get Hindustani music.

  • In any case, if you said Hindustani music sounds better and more soulful than carnatic and islamic melody, then i would have agreed. :)

  • Does anybody know the raaga at 4:38, after the women is done talking?

  • So many beautiful smiles!

  • absolutely captivating...

there is a lot to learn from these 4 videos

  • great

  • what was that violin-like instrument? it was BEAUTIFUL!!!

  • its called the Sarangi. its the bowed string instrument of indian music.

  • its called Sarangi! on Sarangi is the great Ustad Sultan Khan

  • @TaalPanchamSawari :Yes! Of the 'Piya Basanti' fame.

  • I believe it is called surangi. It is in the string class along with Sitar.

  • Yes so beautiful. The western violin is a derivation of an Indian instrument, can't remember which though. As is the celtic bagpipes which is basically a shenai with pigs bladder ... hehehe. It's not surprising really. In polynesia many words are rooted in sanskrit and of course so is Latin, Greek, Hebrew English. The sanskrit word "namah" has similar meaning as the english "name". Why even Brahma and Shiva is etched into the chants of ancient polynesia. India.

  • thats not right. the carnatic violin came to india through the british, and was adapted to carnatic music by baluswamy dikshitar, brother of the great muthuswamy dikshitar.
