I heard that if a tourniquet is used on a limb, in most cases, that limb will be lost and must be amputated. It was explained that releasing the tourniquet would release 'dead blood' into the body, which would then endanger the heart, potentially causing death. Therefore, if a tourniquet is applied, it can not be released again, and the limb will be lost. It must be used only as a lst resort therefore, and when an artery has been severed. Is this correct?

@brgzz As long as the tourniquet is removed in time person should be fine. Even at the first sight of blood a hasty tourniquet can be applied and after assessing the wound it can be either removed and replaced with some form of pressure dressing or a changed to a deliberate tourniquet. If a major artery is severed it can take only 3 minutes to bleed out

.After the tourniquet is applied the injured person has hours to be treated by a medical professional in which case the bleeding can be controlled and the tourniquet can be removed safely. This is why it is effective to mark down the time the tourniquet was applied.
