  • You should do your Mudra more slowly, also on the last step on the Mudra when you put your hand up and forward, you first bring your hands up to your face, THEN turn it, not just putting it up like that.

Your kibadachi's are too short, and when doing your punches jerk your hips for more power, and loosen up a bit, your too stiff, and one last thing, Wansu is the second kata, a yellow belt kata, Tykyoko each is the first, a yellow striped kata, but your good, just need more improvement ^^

  • bow with you're head up when you start the kata, then at the end bow with it down.

  • Very good performance. Nice and strong movements.

  • haha that was good :3 wunsu is my favorite kata and I know up to gopei so far other than parts of other blackbelt karas, but still this was good. did you forget the dump after the dragon fist though?

  • @roberto6886

First off I would like to see you upload a video of you doing this kata. LOL Do you know anything about the person in the video?

  • Pretty rough. I've been in a Shuri Karate student & instructor for 26 years and I can say with confidence that you need to slow down and "learn" the kata. You are doing little more than dancing....

  • can u re upload that but do it slower

  • the light can be better... but overall i like the kata...

  • too rigid loosen up, relax.

  • This is the begining kata of our system, take your time and look at your stances, then do it very slow . The hidden moves in the kata are very nice, you will find them when you are ready....or when you think about the kata when you do kumite (third level, with opponents). I wish you good luck, keep on training.

  • One must crawl before one may walk - and even when we walk - can we run? When running like humans, we must learn to adapt the likeness of the tiger, the dragon and the snake. I admire his try, and he might have learned much from comments - but hopefully more from his sensei.

  • My response was not about the performance of this kata, but a critique that told him that his stances needed to be lower and to "lock out'' for power. It is my personal opinion that such advice is beginning karate and not for mature students. Keep the stances level to generate power, but power on what plane. Keeping the stance low suggest that the fight stays low. If that is the case, why continue to strike? Strikes from low stances are slow...

  • And do not allow a person to transfer power. If you don't believe me, look at any type of jiyu kumite (traditional or mma). Nobody maintains static stances and operates on one plane.

That type of thinking is Japanese, and does not reflect the life protections principles of the kata.

  • so fast. don't be in a hurry.

  • Your movements and form are for the most part correct. You should now focus on getting you stances as low as possible...they are way to high. Also your head is bobbing ALOT up and down as move...this should not happen. You should remain fluid and on one level. Preferably as low as you can get. Also more power...need to lock out every single movement. Kiai on body drop. Other than that...good video. Keep training.

  • Why should the stancs be low? Why should he remain on one level? Why lock out every single movement?

  • Because one of the main things to recognise shuri-ryu by, is exceptionately low stances in katas. One should remain on one level, because the kata goes on more fluently, it looks sharper, and one looses energy which should be used to focus on the opponent - in wobbeling up and down. Finally in focusing on the kata in parts, makes the kata greater. I may stand corrected by more lerned karateka than myself - but that would be my consideration.

  • i dis agree i didn't see his head bobbing very much, and his power was decent however i believe you are right he could be a little lower in his stance and it would probably give him more power, however i think if he feels the most comfortable there and is getting the power he wants it shouldn't matter

  • Well that was a nice dance... what belt are you?...offence

  • A comment on the post relating to the kiba and neko in wansu, O, sensei sent a memo to change the stance into neko @1985-87 i have that letter but forgot the date. Still can be with kiba. About the kata your toes keep leaving the ground and you slide your foot out on reverse punch. Incorrect. You need to trust hip forward while piviting towards attacker making you foot slide forward. Be sure not to move the foot your hip is the one doing it. lock the hip.

  • i got my black belt in shuri ryu a month ago =P.

    what rank are u?

  • Not bad need more light though.

  • great job! i had to learn wansu too. got my orange belt 2 weeks ago ^.^ don't forget to breathe when you do your forms. we're taught to imagine we are in combat. the form isn't done right untill you do it untill you're outta breath. i don't know much about this stuff but we're told to keeyai [dunno how to spell it lol] on the powerfull hits like the back fists. i like to imagine myself as a waterfall: smooth and flowing yet powerfull. well good luck and keep up the karate!

  • The kata is good for a beginner. Keep practising using the advise provided.

As a Shuri-ryu Nidan, this is my favorite of all the kyu katas other than Empi-sho. Slow down, lower the stances and remember, it's not a dance, it's a fight! Also, I was always taught not to look at the floor when bowing - leaves you exposed for an attack.

  • very good, you seem to have got this one down. I hope for more tutorials though.

  • Watch your stances. Most of your kibas are shiko. That sets you up for less hip movement on the reverse punch.

One of the highlights of the kata is to show a lot of power when moving from the morote shuto/neko to the reverse punch.

Push your rear knee into the back of your front knee on your shadow stance.

    Train hard.

  • Thank you.

  • Nice so what you going to do with the kata?

Any techniques as a two man drill?

  • You have the movements down pat...that is good! The advice is good here too...don't lift your feet, slide them along the ground with only the ball of the foot touching the floor--easy to do on hardwood like this. Also remember your breathing! Exhale on those strikes. And on your strikes, keep relaxed throughout the technique and tense at the very end...think whiplash. The amount of time you have spent practicing shows in your kata. Good job, keep at it. :) From a fellow Shuri karateka.

  • Thank you^^

  • In the opening movement you raised your heels but you should slide your feet on the floor:)

  • Nice. i was looking for a video of the wansu i know, and you do the same one as me. good job, it would probably look better if you werent constricted in jeans.

  • lol yeah deffinately.Thank you^_^

  • Hey, nice vid. Only think you lack fluency in your moves - especially you slow down in the last part. That being said I cannot do it, being white belt for graduation in a month :-)

    Best regards

    Christian

  • There is a World Federation of Karate with high level teachers on its committee... it is worty try to investigate the particular stands, and other movements that the Federation accepts as valid so this will help if you ever want to compete on international turnaments of tratitional karate styles.

  • thanks

  • are you wokring on Anaku?

  • alittle bit.I only know the first few movemnts so far.Ive been focousing on my requirments for my next belt and also we have a physical fitness test coming up in about 3-4 weeks that Ive been working for.

  • Do you have any information such as history or important things about Anaku? The dojo I train at, Lee's Cardio and Kick Box, is doing a summer camp and I've been put in charge of teaching Anaku. I was asked to get learn everything about it, and the Shuri-Ryu website only shows so much.

Good job on Wansu. I saw a couple things that my dojo would get on us about though.

  • great to see this on youtube.

Glad to see the Kosho Brothers represent.

  • Not enough people know that Robert Trias was the first person to teach karate in the USA. He was one of the pioneers of martial arts in america.

  • Who're your guys' teachers?

I am a black belt in Shuri-Ryu under Shihan Joseph Walker, one of Grand Master Trias's head students.

  • I am a san kyu (Third degree brown belt) in Shuri-Ryu. Looks pretty good so far and I see you use the neko-dachi for the scans. That's how Hanshi Bowles and O Sensei Trias-Kelley instruct it. Little surprise since Hanshi Bowles is your sensei.

My most recent kata is Bassai(Passai) Dai, which is Defeating the Giant Enemy's Circle. My last kata before testing for the black belt is Go Pei Sho , Tearing Peacock Form.

  • Yes, that is pretty much the Wansu I render. Good job and keep up the standards. When you reach dan levels you will go back and take this kata apart (bunkai) and find that there is alot more than block and punch.

  • Thank you about ancient history of Wansu. We really don't know who is creator, but I would like to know this Wansu version teacher in close history. For example: Who taught this kata to your Mr. Bowles in Okinawa?

  • Oh that would have been Grand master Trias that taught him this. And Grand master Robert Trias opened the first Karate Dojo in Phoenix Arizona in 1946.

  • Thank you again! And now the final stage please: Do you know who taught Mr. Trias in Okinawa?

  • GrandMaster Trias was taught by Tong Gee Hsing and later Yasohiro Konichi. Other teachers included Hoy yom Ping and James Mitouse and Makato Gima. This Wansu looks quite good for a Hachi kyu. Keep upi the training!

  • And Tong Gee Hsing was a student of Choki Motobu, a master in the Shuri-te style of Kininawan karate-do.

Shuri-Ryu comes from both Shuri-te and Hsing Yi style martial arts.

  • Impressive, it appears pretty cool. But I don't believe that I'm going to learn that by just watching you =)

  • The creater of this Kata is unknown.

What rank are you? Where is Shihan Bowles teaching out of now?

By the way, you must swing from your 45 degree kiba, all the way around and into a zen facing straight ahead when you do the break.

  • lol I just started so Im a white belt but learn fast. And actually no my stances are correct not perfect for nothing is but correct. And its Hanshi Bowles.Oh and 45 degree kiba is a hanbun kiba-dachi.Just thought Id let you know

  • So you have learned some terminology, very nice.

Well you are talking to a Sondan, and no, your stances are far from correct, especially in the break.

There is no correct, there is only perfection. Thinking like that will keep you a hachikyu.

    keep training, and humble yourself.

  • Agreed. Correct == perfect. Your stances are neither. At your level that's nothing to be ashamed of! You know all of the movements, and that's all that could be expected.

  • There are some slight alterations from when I first learned wunsu. Malone-sensei had me originally do kiba-dachi when scanning, but later we changed it to neko-dachi in adherence to how Hanshi Bowles and O Sensei Trias-Kelley instruct it. This is also in compliance to the latest (and final) edition of 'The Pinnacle of Karate'.

Some changes were made to correct back to the original forms of these techniques. And if you watch how the practitioners of Shuri-Te punch today it is identical to ours.

  • not sure on that, one of my instructors was taught by Trias, and i believe he said that that was the way Trias did it, in kiba. I run it out of kiba anyway because neko just looks silly.

by the way the new pinnacle is really hacked up, bad. the original has soooo much more in it. I have both, and i tell ya roberta took alot of stuff out.

I dont really consider anyone a main authority on shuri/shorei today anyway. since Trias died, its like a sea of ronins all claiming to be style head.

  • I don't know about silly, but personally I find the neko makes it easier to pivot than kiba. I was originally taught with kiba, but my sensei instructed us to adjust to how Hanshi Bowles does it. If you prefer to do kiba than go for it. =) I just follow my sensei out of respect. His school so his rules go.

As for the Pinnacle, my sensei has the older version. I may borrow it to compare.

  • Yea you should, it has a wealth of great information. It was originally written as an instructors manual.

I am moving to chicago and opening another school up there. I dont know how many shuri schools are around there, though it would be interesting to find out. I know Shihan Charles Bridgewater used to teach up there.

  • I follow you. I'll ask Malone or Wenger-senseis about it.

  • Daniel-San, glad to see you are still training! I miss you and Sensei S. and our garage workouts! Good luck on your move. Master Keopple should be in the Chicago area.

Remember that Bridgewater broke from Trias and did teach things a little differently. Personally, I like it better (ie: Kiba rather than neko-ashi in Wansu. Either way is correct.

  • If you're talking about Phillip Koeppel, you'll find him (if he's home) at his Peoria, IL dojo. That's about three hours south of Chicago.

  • Thank you! It could be nice if you could find out who taught this version of Wansu in Okinawa.

  • Wunsu Kata (Strong Arm - Dragon Boy Dumping Form)

I bring no evil and bear no weapons.

Creator unknown. It is believed Wansu kata was composed by Okinawan martial artists as a tribute to the Chinese emissary Suppushi Wanshu who was in Okinawa around 1685. There are 38 movements and 11 attacks.

  • A small lineage of teacher would be nice!

  • Well I practice under Hanshi Bowles.Head of Shuri-ryu currently.I train at the world headquarters for Shuri-ryu.I have noticed it is pretty different from other styles.I will ask who orriganted this Kata.
