Why are americans all so defencive about the way they pronounce it? Its a Japanese Name, but Americans are always ITS HOW WE SAY IT IN THE USA. We don't pronounce Canon like Cay-non because that's not how our accents work! Why doe British people say aluminium like alu-miinium. If it were spelt Nick-on, more North Americans would pronounce it like the Japanese do. It's not because of some american pride thing that you're making it out to be.

Why does Nikon dedicate an external function button to Image Quality? The last three bodies that I have purchased I set to RAW and never changed it. Am I missing something or do other photogs change this setting frequently enough to dedicate an external button without having to navigate the menu's to change it? When I am in the field, I do not look at a scene or object and decide that maybe I should change this shot to jpg medium.

No Offense, please pronounce the word NIKON by (nee-kon) not (ny-kon). Japanese made the brand and called it NIKON (nee-kon), it's a brand name so it's a bit messy to pronounce it so strangely. It's like pronouncing the brand APPLE (ahh-pol) to (ahy-pol). A little respect for the manufacturers themselves. BTW nice review on the new NIKON D4, you always have the nicest reviews for DSLR. either he's in a very large room or he's a giant. not sure its worth the upgrade if you haven't taken sufficient number of pictures with your d3 or d3s. second, its more of a consideration for professionals. me, i will hold on to my d7000.
I use Canon but i admit both are good but nikon is specialized on lenses and glass and optics and nikon have better lenses than canon and both are for photography and both have pros and cons so why fight about that i use canon because on budget but if i haved more money and more experience i will switch to Nikon but for now Canon and Those L series Lens are trmendous
Anyone buying a D4 will really need to be taking a lot of video to justify it. As a stills camera it's not really what most photographers would need. The D800 may be more appropriate for most with good G class lenses.
The only reason to get this camera is if you are a pro sports shooter. Wait til the d800 comes out or buy the d3x instead if you're a landscape or architecture photographer.
@JaredPolin Yes I need a D4. My D3s was just a toy to get a hands on demo how to use it and play around. Like you amateurs got to start somewhere, just like preparation for a big exam. Also why should I keep my D3s? It's just going to lose its value when the D4 comes out.Reinvesting it in a D4 I get my moneys worth from my D3s.
I was wondering with the new xqd cards, presumably they have been made for stability of data. And so they have a much larger capacity, and to increase photographs in buffering.
Have you ever had a problem with 1 of your 2 CF cards corrupting in the card, either mid-shoot or when your trying to load photographs onto your computer?
PS Ive never had a problem with SD, or my old canon that shot CF.
Which can be dodgy with only 1 card, but most shoots i switch cards from one to another.
@rorrt Yes, once and it's very unpleasant! Few years ago I was paid to photograph a wedding dinner reception and after the shoot I ejected the cf, one of its pin broke-off and was stuck inside the cf. I didn't know it then so i inserted it into the cf card reader and that's when I discovered the problem. Luckily no photos was lost.

@JaredPolin I have a question about selling the D3s. If I wanted to sell mine to upgrade with only 10,000 actuations and is in great condition/shape with no damage. It looks like it came off the shelf from a camera shop and smells new. Whats the base price I should start at? I posted an ad and many people were offering me $3000-$3200 CAD. I was told that Nikon pro bodies don't lose their value until a new body is released. Is this true?
Well If you are getting the D4 for video, I'm sure Canon 1DX would be a wiser choice:) They got better lenses too with faster+quiteer AF. Yes, I know, I was a NIKON shooter. But I love the D4 body design. XQD sucks. Hardly anyone bends pins on a CF card.
Great review Jared!! As far as the Nikon goes, not impressed enough to invest 6k for incremental upgrades. I Have many Nikon bodies and some a great advances over the previous model, like, one I own the D2Xs and the huge jump to D3s, that was a massive jump in technology but I still use the D2Xs heck I even use my D-200 still and also F4. Don't get me wrong, I am sure it is an outstanding Camera, the D4 and I would get it if I was a pro sports shooter, concert shooter, or night creeper.

Jared, you did an w.o.w. preview and low iso sens. is MUST for every pro.3D tracking,wireless,joysticks etc give another dimension in photography and Nikon knows how to cope with the megapixel myth, introducing a PRO Hi-end camera with 16 mp (more than enough for me. Thank God too for 16mp. I shoot RAW too and I want to see the speed that Qxd card saves RAW images in 10fps (FX mode). I 've seen all your videos and I believe Lilly will love this "masterpiece" D4 too...Thanks for everything!

AF question in the dark. How does AF work under pitch darkness? I know D4 and other latest models have better ISO capabilities but if it can't see anything in pitch darkness, how does it focus??

As one of those that do, I know we reach a critical point in our craft where the tools we use limit our creative abilities. I really can't stand what Nikon has been doing lately, SB-910 was released two weeks after I got SB-900, it's like Nikon fixed its mistake "overheating" by producing a newer product !!! both speedlights have 98% same features, it's just the thermal protection that was improved, and now we got this !!! can't Nikon give its fan something better than Canon, because it seems Nikon copies some of Canon's features! am I right or I'm not getting the whole image ?
Decouple the "AF-on" and the "shutter" buttons with the A5 activation setting and you will never need a AF-C and AF-S switch. SO AF / M focusing switch is enough!
Just sold my NEX-FS100, the world of DSLR's are getting more interesting. I knew Nikon would be the first since the 5D to offer a formidable video solution. They simply don't have the same politics as Canon (i.e. XF Camcorder vs EOS). Way to go Nikon, love the 3 mode crop feature, it's like having 3 lenses in one!!! Very handy. Wish they added a 1.3x crop too. Can't wait to see Canon's response... 5D Mark III?
The ethernet capabilities will get SO much use in the olympics, methinks, since they can setup thirty cameras that all snap at the same time, imagine awesome goal images, 360° !! Just imagine all the things they can do with that.

The card change is no help - so far San Disk and Lexus have said they have no plans to make them!
Also battery issue makes using D3 series and D4 together a major PITA.

Well If you are getting the D4 for video, I'm sure Canon 1DX would be a wiser choice:) They got better lenses too with faster+quiteer AF. Yes, I know, I was a NIKON shooter. But I love the D4 body design. XQD sucks. Hardly anyone bends pins on a CF card.

The D7000 has the same resolution and is a lot cheaper and easier to handle. If you want to get something new, focus on the lens, not the camera

Great review Jared!! As far as the Nikon goes, not impressed enough to invest 6k for incremental upgrades. I Have many Nikon bodies and some a great advances over the previous model, like, one I own the D2Xs and the huge jump to D3s, that was a massive jump in technology but I still use the D2Xs heck I even use my D-200 still and also F4. Don't get me wrong, I am sure it is an outstanding Camera, the D4 and I would get it if I was a pro sports shooter, concert shooter, or night creeper.

Jared, you did an w.o.w. preview and low iso sens. is MUST for every pro.3D tracking,wireless,joysticks etc give another dimension in photography and Nikon knows how to cope with the megapixel myth, introducing a PRO Hi-end camera with 16 mp (more than enough for me. Thank God too for 16mp. I shoot RAW too and I want to see the speed that Qxd card saves RAW images in 10fps (FX mode). I 've seen all your videos and I believe Lilly will love this "masterpiece" D4 too...Thanks for everything!

Thank you for this review... you are always spot on with your reviews and I'm glad you had the chance to feel out the D4... I have mine pre-ordered through Adorama and am expecting it in February. AF question in the dark. How does AF work under pitch darkness? I know D4 and other latest models have better ISO capabilities but if it can't see anything in pitch darkness, how does it focus??

Thanks J, nice job. For those that seem not to understand. Many photographers consider themselves artist. As one of those that do, I know we reach a critical point in our craft where the tools we use limit our creative abilities. That in itself is why artist seek out even the most minute advantage, to enable us to take it to the next level regardless of how minute the next level is. An inch can be a mile ! I really can't stand what Nikon has been doing lately, SB-910 was released two weeks after I got SB-900, it's like Nikon fixed its mistake "overheating" by producing a newer product !!! both speedlights have 98% same features, it's just the thermal protection that was improved, and now we got this !!! can't Nikon give its fan something better than Canon, because it seems Nikon copies some of Canon's features! am I right or I'm not getting the whole image ?

Decouple the "AF-on" and the "shutter" buttons with the A5 activation setting and you will never need a AF-C and AF-S switch. SO AF / M focusing switch is enough!

Just sold my NEX-FS100, the world of DSLR's are getting more interesting. I knew Nikon would be the first since the 5D to offer a formidable video solution. They simply don't have the same politics as Canon (i.e. XF Camcorder vs EOS). Way to go Nikon, love the 3 mode crop feature, it's like having 3 lenses in one!!! Very handy. Wish they added a 1.3x crop too. Can't wait to see Canon's response... 5D Mark III?

The ethernet capabilities will get SO much use in the olympics, methinks, since they can setup thirty cameras that all snap at the same time, imagine awesome goal images, 360° !! Just imagine all the things they can do with that.
