Justification is simple.  The amount of casualties if Japan was invaded would have been atrocious on both sides. Also, considering Japan started WW2 long before the official date in history books, the atrocities committed, and the mentality of the Japanese soldier, what would you do? They declined to surrender and were warned prior to the first bomb, then prior to the second bomb, and finally, they surrendered. As for the casualties, well, remember, politicians make war, civilians suffer.

The atom bomb SAVED more lives than killed (because the US planned out further invasions of Japanese ground in case the bomb was not deployed). 9/11 did not. Actually, the deaths caused to civilians by the bombing of Nagasaki and Hiroshima far outweighed the countless deaths on civilians and allies if the war was to continue. This was not a simple way of 'getting back at Japan', it was a way of getting the message across that America is advanced and has the power to stop them. Japan just realized this and chose peace over another nuclear fission weapon developed during the Manhattan Project... Good choice if you ask me.
