Saving Private Ryan was also historically accurate. It was based off of a newspaper article on Remembrance Day(Armistice or Veterans day in other countries). The rules in the US were if you owned a farm one son could stay back and work it of draft age. If that son died they would recall one sent to war. One families tragedy was both were killed but due to communication problems during war they didn't find that out til the team sent to retrieve him came back with the news.

You may find to version of the film. The "Director's Cut" takes about 3 1/2 hours. The original cut is named "The Original Uncut version", taking about 5 hours. The uncuted version got quite more jokes and "cool" scenes than the Director's Cut (at least at the german filmversion.. )

@MasterMagoo Hab das Buch auch gelesen. Ich finde man kann beides nicht miteinander Vergleichen.. ist wie Herr der Ringe. Im Buch steht viel mehr und es ist viel ausführlicher aber der Film ist trodtzdem gut.

Ja es soll auf keinen der Eindruck entstehen, dass der Film schlecht sei. Der ist wirklich gut. Aber das unermessliche Leid und diese total widerliche Atmosphäre, wie im Buch dargestellt, kann der Film nicht mal ansatzweise hergeben. Auch übertreibt der Film an einigen Stellen - und untertreibt wiederum an anderen. Stichwort: Schiffbrüchige, Waboverfolgung, Schimmel etc.

Got to say this is one of if not THE best War Film on Earth! Finally got Das Boot the Directors Cut on DVD and although I'm British the English dub in my opinion completley ruins the movie so I switch in to German 5:1 and love it! Er ok it helps when I speak fluent so no need for subtitles Either!
