It is a matter of comfort and, believe it or not, sometimes shoes get "in the way" with comfort, speed, etc. Some play in socks, or drumming shoes; some play with drumming gloves or tape too. There are guitarists who play with tape on certain fingers, wrists, etc (I never could). People with issues with their hands and wrists and such use these little preferences and methods too. Not really a science behind it, but a lot is just comfort.

There is also a Crossroads DVD available at Walmart's website, it's only like $10-$12, and it has bonus tracks not on the TV version.
