Thanks so much for posting this. I was eating mint chocolate around my macbook (never ever again) and the sweet sticky mint filling seeped into two of my keys. I lost response from those keys in the next two days.

Today I was able to remove the keys, clean the keyboard and the keys with warm water (very carefully) and regained 100% response. Thanks again.

I honestly would not recommend this because if you take your key off in the wrong way, it'll be damn near impossible to put back on. My old mac is missing it's C key lol

this was extremely helpful...my ` key and escape key was stickydue to some cola spillage and i was all "aghhhh!!!" and i saw this video and carefully removed the keys and cleaned them then i was all "yayy!!!"

word to those who wish to attempt this the escape key was fucking hard as balls due to its size

i used a sharp knife and my sisters tweezers....now they feel awesome again =)

what i always do is i shut my mb down then close it, turn it over and slap it carefully

after that i open it again and wipe the dirt from the screen that fell out of the keyboard.

Don't do this. I followed these instructions and broke one of the keys (not the cap -- the actual underlying hardware). Apple had to replace my entire upper case.

A better method is to pop off the key cap with a stiff guitar pick with a rounded tip. That way you don't have to mess with the underlying scissor mechanism at all. (I used a Dunlop Ultex 1.14mm pick.)

@capoeira4u They key caps themselves should be the same, BUT the new MacBook Air keys apparently have a coating on them that makes them easier to see in low light because they don't have backlighting. The light form the screen reflects off them more than the keys on the MacBook Pros (seeing as they have backlighting). They should be exactly the same otherwise. Just be prepared to have them slightly less visible in low light if you swap them for the older MBA or MBP keys.

@TalesOfWar Actually I've been trying to take my MBA 11" buttons off but it's totally stuck. It's not easy as the video shows at all. I did call Apple and they told me that the keyboard replacement requires changing the entire unibody case. And I read on some other web that the MBA keyboard, unlike MBP, are permanently attached to the case. I don't know if this is true?

I tried this on my MacBook Pro (2010 unibody) and I broke the bit of plastic that hooks into the metal on the computer. The Genius bar replaced the whole key for me.

Definitely not as easy as it looks in the video.

@Eleft I'm sure it happens on accident fairly frequently because the Genius pulled out a box full of keyboards to every model they sell. Accidental damage is not covered under the warranty though (I said it fell off while I was typing) and they will definitely notice liquid damage.

Ok, I cleaned my keys a couple days ago because i spit pop on them. they all worked fine until after i was done working on my delete key. i first broke on of the prongs off on the macbook itself to hold the mechanism for the key in place. it still worked after i did this, but then after about 5 mins it stopped working all together. im typing this on a different key board because i can't delete ANYTHING. its all my fault i understand, but what can i do to fix it? its not a hardware issue.
