Chinese culture is traditionally very respective of animals, as you can see with Buddhism and Taoism rooted in the traditional culture. The problem these days is that the government basically got rid of their former ideologies in favour of a totalitarian government that was nearly a cult of personality. Recently, the Chinese government let capitalism in abruptly and the lack of moral standards made many greedy power hungry businessmen, and the government's focus is too anthropocentric IMO.

China is way more humane to animals than America. Compare the amount of meat consumed in China to the amount Americans consume. Furthermore, China is not wasteful and eat every part of the animals.

I've seen time and again nations that have been abused by war, militant governments, or just plain starvation and poverty simply have no compassion left over for animals. Their own lives are worth so little, how can their animals be treated any differently. Animal rights are unfortunately a luxury of rich nations.
