  • 33 people could not master the roll

  • great video.

  • wow i can do a roll with a paddle but not with my hands... maybe because i don't get enough water resistance or stuff but i'm already leaning back with my head coming out last. no idea why i ain't able to come up

  • This video is great. I rolled my kayak for the first time today. I did it once, but couldn't do it again. I guess I need to figure out a method and stick to it. I was leaning forward with my nose on the skirt, but the majority of these guys were leaning back. I'll have to try that to see if it makes a difference. dagger approach 9.0

  • Very cool, thanks for sharing.

  • Great video i found this extremely useful!!!

  • i just bought a kayak and was worried i would go underwater and drown but now i know the technique to get back and it looks quite simple

  • @criso1994 practice. a lot, it sooo much harder to get down then you think, but once you get it its easy. especially practice if your white water kayaking.

  • @criso1994

You might still want to practice it a few times in a calm area with someone nearby. You don't want to be in a dangerous spot and realize it wasn't as effortless as originally anticipated.

  • Cool. I have to master that this summer, best vid ive seen on the subject, Thanks.

  • sick :)

  • You must really hate your shoulder!

  • The angle (from setup on top of the water with the paddle to your side) is the front blade, side towards you should be just over the water with the outside edge of that blade in the water. give it a go and see how much it helps.

  • Just remember to feather (angle) the paddle so that when you sweep the paddle out and away from the kayak the paddle stays on top of the water.

  • i can how its useful skill to know but it would just make me sick doing that over and over... hell its making sick just watching this guy do it!

  • As an added bonus it also gets water up your nose!

  • great video, i really appreciate you posting it. I was wondering if you considered filming from behind the paddler? i believe that would give a more accurate representation the first person experience (especially for those of us who may have difficulty with this particular move). thanks again.

  • that is a really awesome video

cool to see the underwater side of things you know

  • Awesome video! I'm taking pool classes and we worked on snaps and braces this week, next week is the sweep roll, I will be watching this all week, trust me! Great job on the video, I can almost smell the pool chlorine..or is that from last night class, maybe I didn't wash my hair enough :-)

  • great stuff mate by the way where did u get your water camera??? thanks alot

  • fantastic camera on the kayak following the kayaker under water and the movements. thanks, great video idea.

  • Thx man this helps out ALOT and the high def is just an amazing teaching tool thanks again!

  • The underwater views really take the mystery out of what goes on during the roll, very helpful. Thanks

  • The underwater views are insane, makes me want get in my kayak and start rollin'

  • I prefer the C to C roll. It protects your head from the rocks and brings you up in position to take a solid stroke.

  • What's the difference between c to c and sweep? *looks baffled*

That guy musta been dizzy at the end of that... But, it looks so much fun! I get to have a go tomorrow again, yay!

  • the c to c is basically the sweep roll broken up into 2 steps. instead of going horizontal and then vertical with you paddle with respect to the water line, the sweep roll cuts across at an angle.

  • c to c you come out to almost a 90 degree angle with your paddle and boat then flick your hips and push on paddle, sweep you start to sweep the blade across the surface from a position almost parallel to the boat and roll your hips at the same time.

  • omg! it makes me so disorientated!!

  • i guess you have to use your ab muscles..makes me feel better about kayaking

  • for all u guys tring to learn to roll. the first thing u gotta do is get comfortable under the water. i know that sounds tough for some people. but i know that i can stay under the water for 2mins and 12 seconds and still have enough time to pull off a hand roll. its all practise and building ur confidance! trust me, get a buddy and just sit under the water all day rescuing each other. it'll pay off, once ur comfortable under the water u wont panic and forget your movements or pop ur deck.

  • Never a truer word spoken....... 2 mins 12 seconds?????? Thats bloody impressive.

  • I SECOND THAT COMMENT...you are right..I cannot roll and am learning braces,,high and low and will master them and my rescues before doing anything near a roll. I want my braces down so good that they are my first instinct and think that is the smart way to progress to rolling. I read a book that talks about separation of the lower and upper body and a light went off in my head regarding braces..that is the key and great tip...

  • Your right to get your braces right first

A roll is just a high brace gone wrong

  • I always say high braces are a waste of energy and much harder than rolls. I always skip high braces when teaching these things. High braces are also more prone to cause injuries. I'd rather get a little wetter doing a roll than busting a shoulder trying to keep my head out of the water :)

But then again I only deal with sea kayakers so rolls aren't as potentially dangerous as for white water paddlers.

  • No, I agree with you and paddle white water exclusively.

Really, in a whitewater situation if you can't get your low brace down in time, your high brace is probably too weak to do anything but hurt your shoulders (potentially).

Just set up and roll with your impetus, it works much better and you are less likely to hurt yourself.

  • In the river, a high brace is not a waste.Minimising time with head down exposed to river bed is kind of interesting to us. But, learning and using are two different thiings.

  • the only problem with this role is that the power is only featured half way throgh...if you put power from start to end...people will find it alot easier...i think anyway

  • It looks so much easier on video, when your actully underwater it's panic time, so don't think watching this video alone means you can go out and do it, trust me get some lessons.

  • Dont go scaring ppl. Yeah its harder than it seems but there is no need for 'panic time' unless you in the buseater or something monstrous.

  • Where can you get a camera to fit on a kayak or helmet so that when you roll or do waves and get thrown round it doesnt get wet? Im tryin to make some vids for my club and one of these would be a huge assest.

  • i feel well happy i just mastered it 2 nyt i cnt wait for the summer thanks for this post its helped

  • Thanks for the post!

  • Kajak Roll is on the "to do list" in this winter. Very helpful, but I hope I can remember this when I am under water ;-)

  • I have never been in a kayak, but I'll be eventually. thanks for teaching something like this

  • what roll is better c to c or sweep...??

  • sweep is faster, but it can put you in a position to injure your shoulder, the c2c needs a windup and you use your hips more to right the boat and it is slower. honestly i use them both when i paddle.

  • depends on who answers you. i say sweep. quicker, easier to learn, more reliable in current.

  • a sweep roll gets you up faster and protects your face better so I'd have to say it's a little more practical, especially if your whitewater kayaking.

  • depends on your perspective.

sweep is generally considered easier, but c to c keeps your face toward the boat so you can't get bashed in the nose by a rock.

I'm practicing sweep. It's better to have a roll that might maybe get you in trouble than to not have one at all.

  • . . sweetness!!

  • Excelent !!!

  • For people that need to " see " how something is done before they do it, This video is " Prefect " for them ! Thanks for posting, now I got the bug to hit the water again ... Stay wet ~

  • THANKS!!!!!! i'll try!
