Just a shame that Sam died when he did. It would've been interesting to see if his career survived the mid-60's British Invasion (many of his contemporaries careers didn't). No doubt he would have continued to make great records, but that doesn't mean the public would have kept buying them (see Roy Orbison).
I still have my 'Best of Sam Cooke" album with jacket intact and in good shape. He was one of the few who completed for the record dollar in Canada in the summer of 1964 against the Beatles and held his own. A great talent.
@kenimisoncanada yeah beatles great as they were took away our rock and roll. they took us back to pop. they used rock and roll to further their careers and then pulled the rug out with the later stuff.
@bobwills66 Gay means happy . Im pretty sure every person with JUST enough sense can look that up I dont know wtf YOURE talking about but none of that makes sense. Either way back in the day GAY MEANT HAPPY but our recent generations changed it into something completely different. He was saying everyone was HAPPY BCUZ THEY WERE DANCING. and douche does mean short shower (just think about it, when a woman douches sfter sex, she washes out her "private area" i learned that thanx to health class.)
I BEEN LOOKN FOR SAM COOKS VERSION OF WHEREVER I LAY MY HAT ! CAN ANYONE HELP ME WITH THIS ? FOR CRYN OUT LOUD, DONT TELL ME HE NEVER DID IT !!?? GOD FORBID !
my little brother was dancing to this the other day but immediately stopped when he heard "where the people are so gay" and his big fat grin turned into a very stern look in an instant... I LOL'd SO HARD!!
why do I have to live in this crappy generation, I'd give anything to go back to 1960 and cruise around in a nice car, meet a nice girl, get a 5 cent coke, good times, and Im only 14
18 year old college freshmen here, i grew up with all the oldies: the mamas and the papas, the beatles, the who, everly brothers, the monkees, all motown, and much more. im glad my parents were good musical influences on me
@shirayasha You and the 15 yr old who commented just below fill me with renewed hope for the younger generation. You realize as too few do that new music is fine but it's an evolution that wouldn't have happened without the likes of Sinatra, Elvis, The Beatles, Motown, James Brown, and all the greats we enjoy from the past. People who limit themselves to only what's hip now are really missing a lot of good music.
This and Chain Gang were the first Sam Cooke records I bought as 12 and 13 year old in NY Sam was it!!! He could cross the racial divide but was still almost a messiah to black people after he was shot dead in Chicago his massive funeral procession was as if for a Lincoln or Martin Luther King Jr it was something that is almost forgotten now Sam Cooke was a giant Peace Brother
@cannoir No. "Gay" was a common term for homosexuals 35 years before this song. And "douchebag" was a teen insult in the 50s. I think gay in this song was intentional double entendre- especially paired with a verse about an "Old queen." "Old Queen" was a fighting term at least 65 years before this song came out. either the lyricist was unusually innocent, or was having a laugh.
@frank02111 If I remember rightly BOTH versions of this song (Sam and Rod) appear in the film Inner Space. I think this one is better but they're both good.
i know i think more people are dumb these days because of the music they listen to. popular music these days is all about stupid things and kids think that thats whats important. this type of music isnt just about sex and drugs and dancing. i mean theres dancing of course but its not about rave parties. this music wasnt an advertisement to slack off and do nothing with your life. im 14 and practically none of my friends listen to good music.

@NoMasTomas33 I was born in 95' too, i crank sam cooke (anything 50's actually) in my truck and have a ducktail hair cut, definatly wish they"d play this stuff at school dances and stuff!
Love it, love it, love it! I always laugh at the part about the fellow in blue jeans dancin' with the "older queen." Not sure if it means what I think, but I get a kick over my mental visual. This song is so happy and free spirited, showing Sam's versatility as a writer and performer, as he has been known to sing in support of equal rights. I think he's simply one of the best of the very best and we're blessed to have had him.
Fantastic. He could sing just any type of song (You send me, A change is gonna come) and with such talent. When I hear today's singers, I'd like to be deaf. Thank you Mr. Cooke !
