I have a bar I go to in Paris TN called R.J's and I always have to play this song while I'm there. Just fits the atmosphere. But in my head I sing Down on Brewer Street. It's like our mini Beale Street. Thank you Seger for keeping it soulful brother.
I've lived with this song for (I can't believe!!) 35 years and it's as fabulous today as it was in 1976. From one of the all time classic albums. Totally brilliant.
It amazes me to some extent the different world that existed on Main Street Ann Arbor, MI in the 60, 70 and 80's. Like Gun'n'Roses of the 80's L.A. and how different that city was then. My dad and uncles and cousin used to infest these old clubs on Main St. How have times changed.
i remember back in the mid-70's I "snooped" for Christmas presents for the first time in my life. I found a shoe box with 3 tapes in it...yes they were 8 tracks. Kiss Rock and Roll Over, Boston Dont look Back and Bob Segar and the Silver bullet Band. Each Christmas eve we were allowed to open one gift and I went strait for the shoe box. I held it up to my ear and said "It sounds like a Bob Segar tape. I got my ass whipped. Thanks Mom and Dad for turning me on to the good shit!!
Truly one of my favorite artists. Im only 17 and this is my kind of music from growning up to it from my parents. Bob Seger is just an amazing signer and composer. No one will ever be as good as him or anyone else from the old days. Music now a days is fake and ridiculous.
The soundtrack too my youth. 1983 and 84, southern Indiana,. me and my friends, my best friend and his sister (Who was the first girl I ever kissed) . Hanging out, cruising, killing time and being young. those were the days, and this was the music.
my middle brother literally wore this album out the summer before he died. it's the eve of his death 1977 ... and this was his favorite song. i'll always remember. it moved him. so ... in honor of...
thank's audui4you this song meke me so sad, for the message, and fatlard5776 is great your comment, without words for this song, thank's god and youtube we can enjoy this music.
something about this song just transports you back to a time and place that was high school, hanging out with your friends, knocking down a few cold beers on a summer night....it's as if this song takes me there every time I hear it. Bob Seger just does that with his music.
You must have had a decent DJ, I asked a DJ to play this from Seger one night , and he told me he never heard of it , he just got done plying old time rock n roll, Go figure?
This reminds me of a topless bar where I worked as a disc jockey in the 80's in San Diego. It was on Main Street outside the 32nd. Street Naval Base called The Cop Out.
I had a crush on one of the dancers and would walk her to the door when she was done work then watch her walk up the street on her way home.
It's 2011. I may not have been born when this was released but the likeability of music like this never fades, and it says a lot when you can write a songs that make people feel the same way they felt decades ago.
I remember the place and the time where I met Mainstreet girl, Sault. Ste. Marie Michigan.....with a black and white tiled floor.....going back soon.......memories and so divine........thank you!!!
really diggin dis song, used to live on a street called mainstreet! takes me back to dem times!! classic shit rite here!! j-rok frum 3rd block!! we got next!!!
Main St. Your main obsession. The road that is the main point of your life where your mind always ends up walking through. The girl you think about all the time. You don't know why because honestly, she really isn't your type and you know it. But you're in love with her anyways. And it'll never happen.
have you ever loved without telling, ever felt the wind cross your face and no breeze was even blowin' .....you may have been down on mainstreet my friend.
my mainstreet in the seventies & eighties was rue st Catherine in Montreal there was many little club downtown and so many long lovely dancers ahhhhh.... ....the good old days whish i was youg again... Bob's best for me
Ever have a song that symbolizes a moment or special time in your life? Well, for me this song is the anthem for slow summer evenings sitting in front of our firehouse watching the people drift by. So many nights I've done that as a volunteer firefighter, and for some reason this song just sticks in my mind that way.

i used to hear back in my country when i was little (El Salvador) didn't know what it was saying.... felt in love with the song.... and now i hear and understand the melody... and i still love it... "music is the international language"
I first heard this song in my Geography class, believe it or not. My teacher would often play music for us in class, and he has a great taste in music. I wasn't looking forward to entering his class because a lot of people told me he was an ass. But I liked his class. I discovered a lot of other great classic songs I might have never heard otherwise, like "Moondance" by Van Morrison. Anyways.Love the song. It almost has an eerie tune, like the ending credits to a catastrophic movie or something.
Some speculation that this tour was his last. He wrapped up with the walmart shareholders meeting in Arkansas before they all went home. I hope he continues on but only time will tell!
The ten "dislikes" are probably people who, indeed, do love the song and they just want to be argumentative. I mean.........seriously..........who WOULDN'T love this song? No offense to the hearing-impaired, but, you'd really need to be deaf to truly say you don't like this. This is classic American music at its finest. Brings back a ton of fond memories, too!
This past saturday I went out and at the end of the night after the bar closed I was able to hear one more song from the DJ... Out of all the songs in the world this was the one i chose "BOB SEGER MAINSTREET'. I danced all alone in the middle of the dance floor holding my drink up like the statue of liberty lol.. It'll go down as one of my crazy nights. AULANDER NC WOOT WOOT!!!
This is one of his best. Love the Allman's "Melissa" guitar answering the chorus. I love any Bob Seger song that doesn't make me think of Tom Cruise in Risky Business.
I'm a huge hip-hop fan, but Bob Seger and his music in general is so chill. From my opinion, this is his best song. I just saw him in concert and it was actually pretty cool!
I went to high school from 1980-1983, and this music was still fairly young then. This is one of the best songs ever, and it takes me back to a very special time when the world was not as fucked up as it is now. Great memories. Thanks Bob!!!!
I grew up in the sixties in peoria illinois ,Main street was fill on a saturday night with beautiful cars,pretty girls ,hoods ,jocks ,no bodies and was an all america street that everyone loved .memories forever!
My dad owned a gas station on main street in a small town in New Mexico. Good times, pretty girls, and a simple life style. That is what this song reminds of.
@judeyorke Considering there's a Main Street in almost every city and town in America, I think most of us have been on Main Street before, possibly stuck in traffic. Good call. ^_^ Despite its obvious flaws, this is still one of Bob "Over rated" Seger's best songs, though, along with the stripper joint song, "Her Strut", and the country boy song which is so fun to say, "Kat-man-doo!".
you're an idiot. if Bob Seger is overrated, then stay off his videos. That is absurd. So so so stupid man. If you hate it, don't come one here. If it is overrated, then why comment on it?
@AaronLM527 Whoah! Scary! Take a chill pill please and let me explain myself. I think some of Bob Seger's songs are pretty good like Her Strut and Katmandoo, but I don't think his consistency is that great, so I think he's kind of over rated for having only a few songs that I would consider really great. And that's just my personal opinion, too. You can't be an idiot for having an opinion, because opinions can't be wrong, like I respect your opinion that Bob Seger is a good musical artist.
You're right, you're entitled to your opinion. Don't call him overrated though. In my opinion, you might need to do your research before you count Bob off. "Her Strut" and "Katmandoo" are both great songs, but far from his best stuff. Check out Turn the Page, Roll Me Away, Night Moves, Like a Rock, Main Street, Beautiful Loser, Still the Same, We've got Tonight and many many more before you knock him off as overrated.
@AaronLM527 I've been paying more attention to Seger on the radio, and he's got some good music. He just isn't one of my personal favorites. Besides Her Strut, which I've got to admit is bad ass, and Katmandoo, which's so down home country it's awesome, I like Main Street, Night Moves and I don't think anybody's mentioned Hollywood Nights yet, which I also think is good. Being a hard core rock fan, I tend to be very picky, and I rip on certain artists, which might accidentally bug some people.
Old Time Rock and Roll by Seger is #2 on the list of song most played on Jukeboxes, it was voted one of the greatest songs of the 20th century. He wrote a lot of songs too (Heartache Tonight for example, sang by The Eagles), Bob Seger is legendary, no matter what your opinion. I might as well add Hollywood Nights, In your Time, and You'll Accompany Me to the list while I'm on the topic
@AaronLM527 I'm not a big fan of the Eagles either, so I don't care if he wrote for them, but Old Time Rock and Roll and Hollywood Nights are both good songs. You're making me remember a few of the good Bob Seger songs I've forgotten about. I've got to admit Bob Seger is a lot better than a lot of other classic rock groups. I'd consider him somewhere in the middle when I compare him to other rock groups. I never said he was bad. I just said I thought he was over rated.
You don't like the Eagles?????? And you think Bob Seger is "somewhere in the middle," so we will just agree to disagree. I'm just curious, who tops your list? Give me a few.
@AaronLM527 I like hard rock and blues rock a lot more than soft rock. My favorite hard rock groups are Aerosmith, Saliva, Van Halen and Guns and Roses. My favorite blues rock artist is Jimi Hendrix. Even though Ozzie Osbourne is a douche, I like his music. Too bad his music wasn't made by somebody else, because it really rocks. My favorite kind of music is rock, but I like soul music, too, like Diana Ross. AC/DC, Bon Jovi, Foreigner and Def Leppard are good, too, but. Van Halen's my favorite.

I went to high school from 1980-1983, and this music was still fairly young then. This is one of the best songs ever, and it takes me back to a very special time when the world was not as fucked up as it is now. Great memories. Thanks Bob!!!!

My dad owned a gas station on main street in a small town in New Mexico. Good times, pretty girls, and a simple life style. That is what this song reminds of.

According to Bob Seger from his greatest hits cd, this song its about a street in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Im more inclined to believe that.

@19torento
you're an idiot. if Bob Seger is overrated, then stay off his videos. That is absurd. So so so stupid man. If you hate it, don't come one here. If it is overrated, then why comment on it?
AaronLM527 10 months ago
@AaronLM527 Whoah! Scary! Take a chill pill please and let me explain myself. I think some of Bob Seger's songs are pretty good like Her Strut and Katmandoo, but I don't think his consistency is that great, so I think he's kind of over rated for having only a few songs that I would consider really great. And that's just my personal opinion, too. You can't be an idiot for having an opinion, because opinions can't be wrong, like I respect your opinion that Bob Seger is a good musical artist.

@19torento
AaronLM527 10 months ago
@AaronLM527 I've been paying more attention to Seger on the radio, and he's got some good music. He just isn't one of my personal favorites. Besides Her Strut, which I've got to admit is bad ass, and Katmandoo, which's so down home country it's awesome, I like Main Street, Night Moves and I don't think anybody's mentioned Hollywood Nights yet, which I also think is good. Being a hard core rock fan, I tend to be very picky, and I rip on certain artists, which might accidentally bug some people.

@19torento
AaronLM527 10 months ago
@AaronLM527 I'm not a big fan of the Eagles either, so I don't care if he wrote for them, but Old Time Rock and Roll and Hollywood Nights are both good songs. You're making me remember a few of the good Bob Seger songs I've forgotten about. I've got to admit Bob Seger is a lot better than a lot of other classic rock groups. I'd consider him somewhere in the middle when I compare him to other rock groups. I never said he was bad. I just said I thought he was over rated.
19torento 10 months ago
@19torento
You don't like the Eagles?????? And you think Bob Seger is "somewhere in the middle," so we will just agree to disagree. I'm just curious, who tops your list? Give me a few.
AaronLM527 10 months ago
