@mlc2005 she was probably the biggest victim of recent years of the old system. she should have won the Olympic gold, not Hughes. so it's only fitting that this new system gave here a lot of things she deserved and earned! unfortunately no Olympic gold...
I hate Sandra Bezic. Although Slutskaya's program was not classically artistic (it wasn't balletic) it had a lot of energy and personality. This is one of my favorite Slutskaya short programs. She had great jumps and spins, and she greatly improved her spirals. She had great speed across the ice as well.
I have to wonder what Bezic would have said about this music if Kwan had made it to the Olympics. (Kwan also used this short program music)

Irina is always criticized for lacking the grace and artistry of Kwan & company. My response to this is if you want to see a brilliantly acted Tosca go to the Met. This is not the opera or ballet. Skating is an athletic sport and Irina epitomizes that. Her explosive style is electric and mesmerizing! Furthermore I think her spins are some of the most visually appealing in all of figure skating.Interestingly the same can not be said of Kwan whose stiff layback and mediocre spins betray hergrace
although I agree with most of what you are saying, I disagree that Kwan's layback is "stiff". can you do a layback? It's not easy, and you are limited by the nature of the spin. I'm not a die-hard kwan fan, but I will say this: her spins ARE beautiful, even if you don't think so.
@2thinkitive her spins are okay and NOTHING compared to Slutskaya's, and having been a competitive figure skater for 10 years yes I can do a layback spin. The layback is difficult but when Kwan's doing triple combinations difficult isn't an excuse.
i don't really like her skating style, it makes sasha cohen and michelle kwan look so graceful and dainty, but they can both do the jumps and spins as well as actually giving a performance. its kinda like she bulldozes through the routine a bit.

She also commentates the worlds and europeans on tv in her home country.. You were able to see glimpses of her on tv during last season's worlds 'cause they were in moscow..

i've always disliked irina slutskaya, but for some reason i love this program. i think she gave up trying to be an exquisite skater, like michelle kwan or sasha cohen, and became more wild and explosive which worked perfectly for her.
@cw6391 I LOVE this program for her too, although, like you and @manderson610 I don't usually like her style. But she has ALOT of charm and seems like a VERY nice person in interviews. I thiink she's a great athlete and a great ambassador for the sport.
What an interesting coincidence that, after all that rivalry between Slutskaya and Kwan, both skaters who seemingly should have won Olympic golds, both ended up winning an Olympic silver -- and then an Olympic bronze in their next try.
She's very charming and is an amazing jumper, but I personally don't prefer her style. Truly, though, she seems like a very nice person and a great athlete.
I'd like to have seen the battle of the Totentanzes at this Olympics.
I LOVE Michelle, but she would have had to skate her guts out to beat Irina, let alone Sasha in the short here. Give Michelle the artistic mark every day of the week, but there is a speed and an explosiveness about this that I'm not sure Kwan could have matched. Totally healthy Kwan, maybe. Injured Kwan, probably not.

She actually has power and explosive speed unlike those other girls who are built like little twigs. Goddamn I miss seeing her skate. You get no trepidation watching her going for these jumps. :D
Such sheer energy, and from a 27-year old...jeebus. Irina is one of those who's just a born athlete - not even a near-fatal cardiovascular condition could stop her from medalling at her third Olympics. She got criticism for her lack of smoothness and 'artistry' compared to the likes of Michelle Kwan, but I always loved watching Irina's explosive skating style. So entertaining.
Rachael Flatt should watch Irina's performances and learn from her. Irina is powerful but she's not the tiny ice princess type. She has a strong athlete's build, it's what God gave her and she does the best she could with it. I find her program exciting and those JUMPS! Amazing! By far the best athlete there. Shizuka came closest to having the overall package but she did not emote as well as Irina or Sasha. All the young ladies did a great job packaging their skating to feature their strengths.

An awful lot of fans are sadly ragging on Rachael-Irina was this cute little girl with spunk but not much 'artistry' whatever that means compared to say the elegant Kwan in 1998. By 2002 she had worked so hard on improving her presentation, etc. I love the unitard (Debi Thomas was the unitard pioneer!) I think it looks good on Irina and Debi's body types. Frou frou dresses don't work on well built girls-or women. Cohen is slight so she can get away with bangles, etc.
Thanks for your equal, fair and insightful comment! These skating videos draw out the nasty in most people (most of those people don't even know how to figure skate, yet still they judge it as if they're seasoned vets who can easily land quad triple triple combinations).
@Keshira I agree-way back in 1988 when Debi Thomas did a similar program wearing a black unitard our American commentators could not fawn over her enough. I love this SP-Debi's too. Different and DARING not just the ballet-there are other artistic forms.
Wow... she does make it look like sport, in a really good way. Artistic? Such a subjective word. Certainly excellently presented, charismatic, joyous, athletic, energetic. Although v different, kind of reminds me of Midori Ito, who some said also lacked 'artistry' (but I personally love watching).
What I like about Irina's skating even though it's not very elegant, its energetic and exciting to watch. In addition to that, what made her easy to like and recognize is that compelling personality, which is missing today. I miss her a lot =(

By artistic I think she meant choreography wise. Irina could have really done anything with this music playing because it's such a loud powerful piece of music with little diversions. I'm not fond of this performance myself because I too don't find it the least bit "artistic" and it seems to me that Irina is just doing what's required and didn't throw in any flare or uniqueness into it. But that's only my opinion.
i respect your opinion, and i can see how maybe this performance may not seem "artistic" to some people. i think artistry depends on the person, but i will point out that this is a 3 min short program with a fast and energetic music. also this program (technically) was flawless, from the jumps, spins, footwork and overall performance. but thats just my opinion :)
She is artistic, but there are other ways of being artistic than the Cohen or Kwan style of skating. Just because it does not appeal to you, does not mean its not artistic. Btw, Sandra Bezic is so wrong. Kwan was going to use the exact same music. What was she going to say then? She is soooo biased....

In my opinion it wasn't, and I can say that every skater at one time or another(IMO) had a performance that was based more on technicality. I've not said I thought this program wasn't artistic based on anybody elses skating abilities or programs like Kwan or Cohen. Just as an individual program, I don't like it & didn't get any sence of emotion out of it.
But that is just it. You did not like it and that is okay, but it does not mean it was not artistic.. The word artistry covers so much, so it is really a bad term when applauding a skating performance. But I get what your saying though. :)

Debi did wear a unitard during the 88 SP. They were legal at that time, then the rules changes to prohibit them. They were allowed again beginning in the 04-05 season, iirc.
i love her style! shes so strong and unique. idk how can people say shes not artistic. maybe her techniques and jumps overpower everything else, but look from 2:10- 2:30. shes artistic and has great jumps. im sad shes not competing anymore
I am usually a little sceptic about her skating but this was just great. great energy, power, originality in the costume and coreography. and for once...perfect edges in the jumps.
How can Sandra say that this program is not artistic?!??!?!?!? Seams that if you have a natural jumping ability and a good technique you are not an artist on ice... It's a shame she doesn't compete anymore...
@helyszinelokfan actually, the tune is called the dies irae, and it's an ancient chant about death. Many composers have based compositions on this melody including Berlioz, Liszt, Rachmaninoff, and others.
Irina Slutskaya is the one of my best women skaters because she has a nice fashionable dress, lovely real (not fake) smile, inspiring music, and finally fantastic choreography. She has already achieved many things in women skating. Good Luck in Vancouver 2010!

That was exhausting! Talk about attacking a program. Pure speed, power, and abandonment.
Sandra Bezic needs to zip it about the program not having artistry-It's not pretty princess skating, but the artistry is there.
I think she outskated Cohen on the difficulty alone, and if you add her vastly superior skating skills, she should have been in first with out a doubt.
I guess I'll watch her LP now, but is was a real heartbreaker.
I can tell you, the judges might actually have been surprised them selves. Cohen scored only 0.03 more than Irina, so what that basically means is that the judges did not know who came out on top. It is basically a tie.. :)
personally I do not agree with the commentators that that program was a perfect vehicle for her. I think that both the program and costume exaggerated her weaknesses and made her look more clunky and unartistic than she really is. I do not think that that suit would have been perfect for ANYONEs body type....
I think Sasha lost GOEs on her double axel. While Sasha had the best SP composition wise, the top 3 had some sort minor misshap. Even with a strong landing on her axel, Sasha might have only pulled ahead by perhaps 3 points?
The real crime is that Sasha was 1st after SP. Irina was way better than any of her competitors and Sasha had no business overtaking Slutskaya in the SP. Slutskaya's SP is among the best in the history of this sport and she should be like 5 points ahead of the 2nd.

She actually has power and explosive speed unlike those other girls who are built like little twigs. Goddamn I miss seeing her skate. You get no trepidation watching her going for these jumps. :D

Such sheer energy, and from a 27-year old...jeebus. Irina is one of those who's just a born athlete - not even a near-fatal cardiovascular condition could stop her from medalling at her third Olympics. She got criticism for her lack of smoothness and 'artistry' compared to the likes of Michelle Kwan, but I always loved watching Irina's explosive skating style. So entertaining.

Rachael Flatt should watch Irina's performances and learn from her. Irina is powerful but she's not the tiny ice princess type. She has a strong athlete's build, it's what God gave her and she does the best she could with it. I find her program exciting and those JUMPS! Amazing! By far the best athlete there. Shizuka came closest to having the overall package but she did not emote as well as Irina or Sasha. All the young ladies did a great job packaging their skating to feature their strengths.

An awful lot of fans are sadly ragging on Rachael-Irina was this cute little girl with spunk but not much 'artistry' whatever that means compared to say the elegant Kwan in 1998. By 2002 she had worked so hard on improving her presentation, etc. I love the unitard (Debi Thomas was the unitard pioneer!) I think it looks good on Irina and Debi's body types. Frou frou dresses don't work on well built girls-or women. Cohen is slight so she can get away with bangles, etc.

@Keshira I agree-way back in 1988 when Debi Thomas did a similar program wearing a black unitard our American commentators could not fawn over her enough. I love this SP-Debi's too. Different and DARING not just the ballet-there are other artistic forms.

Wow... she does make it look like sport, in a really good way. Artistic? Such a subjective word. Certainly excellently presented, charismatic, joyous, athletic, energetic. Although v different, kind of reminds me of Midori Ito, who some said also lacked 'artistry' (but I personally love watching).

What I like about Irina's skating even though it's not very elegant, its energetic and exciting to watch. In addition to that, what made her easy to like and recognize is that compelling personality, which is missing today. I miss her a lot =(

By artistic I think she meant choreography wise. Irina could have really done anything with this music playing because it's such a loud powerful piece of music with little diversions. I'm not fond of this performance myself because I too don't find it the least bit "artistic" and it seems to me that Irina is just doing what's required and didn't throw in any flare or uniqueness into it. But that's only my opinion.

i respect your opinion, and i can see how maybe this performance may not seem "artistic" to some people. i think artistry depends on the person, but i will point out that this is a 3 min short program with a fast and energetic music. also this program (technically) was flawless, from the jumps, spins, footwork and overall performance. but thats just my opinion :)

She is artistic, but there are other ways of being artistic than the Cohen or Kwan style of skating. Just because it does not appeal to you, does not mean its not artistic. Btw, Sandra Bezic is so wrong. Kwan was going to use the exact same music. What was she going to say then? She is soooo biased....

In my opinion it wasn't, and I can say that every skater at one time or another(IMO) had a performance that was based more on technicality. I've not said I thought this program wasn't artistic based on anybody elses skating abilities or programs like Kwan or Cohen. Just as an individual program, I don't like it & didn't get any sence of emotion out of it.

But that is just it. You did not like it and that is okay, but it does not mean it was not artistic.. The word artistry covers so much, so it is really a bad term when applauding a skating performance. But I get what your saying though. :)

Debi did wear a unitard during the 88 SP. They were legal at that time, then the rules changes to prohibit them. They were allowed again beginning in the 04-05 season, iirc.

i love her style! shes so strong and unique. idk how can people say shes not artistic. maybe her techniques and jumps overpower everything else, but look from 2:10- 2:30. shes artistic and has great jumps. im sad shes not competing anymore

she drives from one end of the rink to the other and does her jumps.....nothing more
there is no comparison to sasha cohen or michelle kwan....
i respect her because of her jumps and her pirouettes...but there is a lot more you have to show on ice....and she has nothing of it...

@helyszinelokfan actually, the tune is called the dies irae, and it's an ancient chant about death. Many composers have based compositions on this melody including Berlioz, Liszt, Rachmaninoff, and others.

Irina Slutskaya is the one of my best women skaters because she has a nice fashionable dress, lovely real (not fake) smile, inspiring music, and finally fantastic choreography. She has already achieved many things in women skating. Good Luck in Vancouver 2010!

That was exhausting! Talk about attacking a program. Pure speed, power, and abandonment.
Sandra Bezic needs to zip it about the program not having artistry-It's not pretty princess skating, but the artistry is there.
I think she outskated Cohen on the difficulty alone, and if you add her vastly superior skating skills, she should have been in first with out a doubt.
I guess I'll watch her LP now, but is was a real heartbreaker.

I can tell you, the judges might actually have been surprised them selves. Cohen scored only 0.03 more than Irina, so what that basically means is that the judges did not know who came out on top. It is basically a tie.. :)

personally I do not agree with the commentators that that program was a perfect vehicle for her. I think that both the program and costume exaggerated her weaknesses and made her look more clunky and unartistic than she really is. I do not think that that suit would have been perfect for ANYONEs body type....

I think Sasha lost GOEs on her double axel. While Sasha had the best SP composition wise, the top 3 had some sort minor misshap. Even with a strong landing on her axel, Sasha might have only pulled ahead by perhaps 3 points?

The real crime is that Sasha was 1st after SP. Irina was way better than any of her competitors and Sasha had no business overtaking Slutskaya in the SP. Slutskaya's SP is among the best in the history of this sport and she should be like 5 points ahead of the 2nd.
