when I think of my ideal sound, like the absolute perfect drum sound for me, your kit pops into my head... it is perfect, I have NEVER and I mean NEEVEEERRRR heard a drumset or cymbals that sound so perfect...
I thought I was the only one who was still wondering about why Weckl went to Sabian! I remember opening Modern Drummer and seeing Dave hugging a Sabian cymbal. Not sure if it's the main reason he switched but they did let him create two of his own lines!
Love the lessons. The cymbals look different to each other. Perhaps I'm in the minority here but most of those cymbals sound the same to me when they are being played in the solo. How different would it sound if there was just one crash and one ride? I'd be curious to hear them played one after another with your listening notes on each to help me discern the differences. Thanks!
i not only respect you for being an incredible drummer and amazing instructor but you really are an awesome dood and you always stay true to your fans and students its a great thing
Dude sick set up. Im mad jelous right now. Your videos are always inspireing and inspirational. I tried to add one of your phills into a drum solo video I just posted....it didnt go smoothly haha. I just have one request.....keep posting those awsome drum videos!!!
what mic's did you use for the amazing cymblas? and where did you put them!?!? they sound pretty clear, awesome!
Any way I Finally recieve your book!!! I wait like 15 days but now i can't stop practicing. Sice the first time i saw the video of you explaining one pattern of your book, i totally wanted, Thanks Mike, I'm like in the fourth pattern and i can notice totally that my drumming has improve so much (i think i say it wrog but i hope you get me) so again, Thanks! Cheer from Mexico
this video never gets old! Theres a passion that shines through in your playing and facial expressions Ive never seen in any of your videos up until your switch to Meinl
Hey mike!!! glad ya made the switch to meinl. I use them as well byzance series traditional medium cymbals and ride. what is the cymbal sitting above your traditional style cymbal?
@Drumified I'm not sure on all the sizes, but his setup, from left to right, is 14" extra dry hats, (18"?) extra dry thin crash, 20" dark raw bell ride, (18", thin?)jazz crash, 20" traditional extra thin hammered crash, (16"?) vintage trash crash. You can check meinl's website to check the sizes, but I know the cymbals are right.
hey i love the sound of these cymbals but could you do me a favor and tell me about what price range these are in and what cymbals you have thanks alot
Hey mike what's up just want to say that you are super, I'm a big fan of yours, your lessons help me a bunch, anyways about the meinl its a good choice you made, I personally use meinl byzance and I love them, I play Latin music and they sound great.
I love how Mike plays specifically to this set. I'm not saying he couldn't play like this before---there are obviously some familiar grooves and fills that we've seen. But there's a darker tone to this entire solo that compliments the cymbals perfectly. I love it.
And I know it was an artistic choice, but ending the video with a super-duper serious model drummer slow pan & zoom shot, instead of IT'S A RAP! --- I dunno, man. :-p
I must admit, I love me some paiste, but I am really digging that the cymbals don't have a defined intro point. they just swell into the sound. I don't know if thats the microphones you have but you gotta love that swell baby!
hey mike first i will love to say that im a big fan of ur drumming... u rock bro.. but can u please tell us how u make ur drum sound so amazing.... i mean talking about how u tune ur drums and the equiment u use on the studio to make ur drums sound like that..??. becuase im learning how to mix drums on my studio but i will love to hear from u how U!! get ur drum sound . i realy hope that u talk about this on ur next videos
Mike, your drumming is very Dynamic, creative, and very mature. I know you know a zillion patterns, rudiment fills and riffs, but I like how you hold back. Question though, WHAT SNARE DO YOU USE. Awesome...It's not too "Snare-y", has alot of Body to it, and has a Low end Undertone "umph" that I dig. Please Enlighten thee.
How do go about choosing the style of your cymbals? I notice that your drumming style is more modern rock, but these cymbals have a softer, warmer crash tendency. It doesn't sound bad, but it does seem a little strange to hear such an aggressive style paired with those hats and rides... even some of the crashes sound a little "wimpy" to my ears. I am a long time Paiste dood, but Meinl has won me over. I'm selling my Dry Crisp Signature ride and getting the Raw Bell ride ASAP. I want every cymbal in this video, and that NEVER happens with me!
Meinl deserves the success they are achieving with their innovation!
I gotta say Mike, that these cymbals, combined with the depth of your kit, gives you a whole new sound. I dig very much. And overall, it gives a much more--musical sound? I guess for my ears, because you can almost hear concert pitches between the cymbals and your drums. Keep it up!

You are looking good man! sounds like a gay comment but its not! haha I mean, looks like your enjoying your new cymbals.Awesome drumming as always Mike! Major kudos for you (dunno what kudos mean but i saw a guy saying that on another video and sounded like something good =D) Keep the good work dude,
If Volkswagen has taught us anything, it's that you can't go wrong with German engineering, good choice Mike, stoked to hear some new lessons with those beauties.
Omg, I hit enter too soon, I was totally joking. I know what you mean, I play guitar and was like pshh. I'll never play Schecter. What am I playing. Schecter. Bottom line, we both know if the gear you play makes the sound you hear in your head, its gonna serve as an instant catalyst. I'm glad you found your pocket. Your great Mike(and totally not a traitor) post a challeng so we can win your old gear!!?
What ever happened to drummers mixing and matching cymbals? I swear, almost every drummer I know swears by a certain brand. I think they all have different perks. I love Zildjian crashes, Meinl rides, Paiste splashes, etc. (Of course, I can't afford to actually buy them). But still, any insight Mike?
Mike, I LOVE the Raw Bell Ride, but I don't know if it would be loud enough for the rock that I play. I can see it being used for lighter rock, country, maybe even a little hip hop. But I don't play any jazz, and I sometimes just bash to some heavier rock. I was wondering if it would do well with that. Thanks!
Isn't that what is great about drumming... Nothing has to sound perfect for anyone but you. There are so many varieties out there from the wood species of your drums to the way you tune them to the cymbals you use. I have always felt that you should go for the sound that you are looking for, not the sound someone else has. Problem for me is that when I realize that one of my cymbals doesn't have the sound I really want it to I have to buy a different one, if I can afford it. Follow your ears
Hey mike, send me your old cymbals! Haha no really, dude you should feel like its christmas every day b/c you are you! You are the shiznit! Love the sound man!
I really like the sound these Meinls produce. I'm usually into A customs because of how insanely bright they are but these offer a really nice dark, shimmer effect that takes some of the obnoxious out of cymbals. I think that's a quality Paiste signatures had. These sort have got a jazz vibe to them but are applicable in rock. I also think it's cool you are so responsive to your fans and hopefully that continues; undoubtedly you will continue to see success if you do so.
Looks like Meinl finally found somebody to invest on who's worth it! I'm glad for you Mike, congrats... By the way, please stop placing that overview cam on the sub-bass or whatever. I'm shaking with it every time you hit the bass drum, lol :)
Your playing is so so sweet. Not to mention your cymbals and drums sound like a peach. The lick you did at 4:02 was killer. Is it by any chance explained somewhere in one of your lesson packages or videos? Cos I'll gladly pay to learn something as cool as that.
Just a suggestion. You should have a link on your youtube page to some kind of picture website where a picture of your drumset is in 3D and all of the drums are labeled so you don't have to keep answering all of these "what size is that symbol?" questions. Everyone who asks about a drum you could just give them a direct link to the site and bam, less work for you...
I think all the cymbal manufacturers have something to offer but I definitely dig the sound you have going on with this set up. Everything in the video sounds great, however on your page at Meinl where you can click the cymbal and hear it, I don't really like any of them. Maybe the recordings are weird? I don't know. I dig them though!
HEERNT!!!!!!! Sounds great man! I just have a suggestion though; could you start mentioning the music in the backgrounds or what you're playing along to so that people know where to look to find similar music.
What does it mean exactly that you are going with a different company? Does it mean that you will not use any other cymbals?
What will you do then with all your old ones? I could really use a some good hand-me-downs. My dad bought me a set this Christmas and it only came with one cymbal. crazy ;)
@drumteacher76: i just wanted to say you are a great drummer and you are the one that inpired me to take up drums and i was wondering how you build up left hand speed and strength once again thanks
oOOooh baby. Those we're some of the darkest grooves I've ever heard you do. Think "Reckoner" from Radiohead turned into a world-class drum solo, and then just make it nasty. That's what you did.
How do they feel in terms in thickness and subsequent durability? I love my 2002 and Signatures.. and only having broken one ever due to my fault, I enjoyed that finding another almost anywhere sounded exactly the same. Do like your choice here though. Thank you for not switching to Zildjian Pitch Blacks, though that would have been a great April fools joke.. :D
They really sound excellent Mike. Meinl, Paiste, Zildjin, Sabian, no-name cymbals that invert every time you hit them, regardless of your choice, you'll always be an amazing teacher and inspiration. Keep it up!
Mike, you groove so hard!!! I love the way you accent the cymbals, drawing numerous tones from even just one cymbal!! Your kit sounds superb!! When I'm setting up mine, I'll definitely be back here for some visual pointers!!
dude u just changed my outlook on meinl. Was never a big fan until I heard them hear. I realize that ur using mics and prolly sound processors but still. Love the ride the most (would be cool to hear some hihat work, which u might have but I zoned out lol(drummer ADD))
@RA710: Why? I don't mean to be rude but did you listen to the part of the video where I explained why? Or did you go "YouTube Drum Video A.D.D" and fast forward to the part where I go really fast, lol. I do that a lot when watching drum videos too :)
@drumteacher76 hey mike i am so happy for you!! i have been in love with 3 things. 1ST God 2nd :the way you play drums and 3rd the sound of MEINL their sound for me its the best!!! and i looooooove it!!!
@drumteacher76 I've thought about it one day, to buy them too, but they're just not fitting in total to what I wanna play, but they're still one of my favorites :)
Very great sounds! I noticed you're accomplishing a similar sound with one Meinl cymbal to the "stacker" you had created before with a splash/crash. I've been a fan of Meinl's sounds for years since first introduced to them at a Thomas Lang clinic in LA. He was bashing the snot out of em and couldn't break em--even hit one crash so hard he turned it inside out and he just popped it back and kept playing. Love my Paistes but when I expand my palette will be looking hard at Meinl.
@Galeontanilla: No worries at all my friend. It's a totally valid question and I have no problem giving you an honest answer. I'm lucky enough to be at a level in my career where the "perks" would be the same at all of the big 4 cymbal companies. This decision has been in the works for almost 2 years and it was very difficult. But when I saw Chris Coleman play at NAMM... his cymbals sounded like what I have always dreamed about. Then the decision became very easy for me. It was ALL about sound.
@drumteacher76 So, I have a question... How do companies react when you switch to another company? Do they, like, question you? or do they act like "it's cool"...
@jiz1825: Heck, I STILL love the Twenty Series, but this was a sound that I had been looking for for over 3 years. Honestly, all cymbals companies make great cymbals, the most important part is finding the one that makes you feel at home on the kit :)
The best feeling in the world is finding kit that suits you. And when you get it, it really does make playing that much more fun. Connecting with the kit is really important I think. I love the sound of those cymbals, the dark (unlathed?) ride in the middle especially. Been looking for a new ride, might invest. With the electronics in the back this is just amazing.
@Xynok111: Wow, thanks for understanding where I was coming from with this difficult decision. Ya, that Dark Raw Bell Ride is a little slice of heaven. Glad you dig it.
Absolutely amazing Mike! I'm about to switch to meinls also but the way you've played with that sound you've always wanted was phenominal...I feel like I should've payed a ticket to hear you play. Keep rockin Mike there is no doubt that you are one of the most gifted educator in percussion and player of our time... definitely up there :)
@TheKoreanX: No secret there my friend. I always use Aquarian Super 2's. Coated for warmth and Clear for More attack. I use Super 2's on my toms and my snare. The Kick has a Super Kick 1 and a Regulator.
@mysweetnothing I think it's probably your speakers bro, because Mike's vids, especially since he moved to his new studio, have some of the best sound quality on YouTube, and though I'm not sure of his exact mic setup I'm quite sure it is stellar.
@LSweener012 No it's not.Their better compared to other youtube videos but most youtube videos aren't great at all. And it's not really 'stellar' he uses Shure pg series mics which are budget. It seems a waste to have such nice gear and not hear it in it's true glory. Why talk about what heads he uses when what we hear is probably not what he hears. The only difference I hear in his new place is the hd audio is slightly better than before.
@mysweetnothing Way to be a super pessimist. Please let me know of drum vids with better sound quality on youtube, I am interested in checking them out., thanks. Also, of course what we hear is not what he hears, it is a recording and is therefore not what he hears while playing.
@Swashbukkles: Bro, I would HIGHLY recommend it. I spent 2 full days at the MEINL Facility in Nashville and I played through every ride they make. They were all great but The Raw Bell Ride was just... well....damn the white man, I'm getting teary eyed just talking about it, lol. It's amazing.
@TheBigDaddyXL When individuals get sponsored by any drum manufacture there is no money involved. They usually receive free gear or if they are required to pay for the gear they get a huge artist discount. If there is a signature item involved like Benny Greb's Sand ride Benny might receive a small small small portion of the sales of that item.
Hey Mike, love the sound of this mix! I have a quick question sorry if you get asked this a lot but how did you get that amazing sound out of your snare without using any type of dampening system ie studio rings or moon gels? I cannot get the overtone ring out of my snare without using a studio ring. Any suggestions?
I've never really been a big follower or supporter of Meinl (more than likely because here in upstate new york, there are no Meinl dealers).
i do have to say that i love the sound. and mixed with the way you tune your drums, the sonic colors go together like rice and soy sauce. id love to see you play some cool jazz, a la john coltrane and miles davis from the late 50's. with this set up it would be mind blowing!!
cheers to you for all that you do and what you inspire.
Awesome, Mike! I was surprised by this. Not only you switching from Paiste, but the actual Meinls you chose. I adore the Byzances, particularly the Jazz and Vintage series. Just seems a far stretch from the brighter, cutting Paistes you had, but your new sound is right up my alley. :)
Hey Mike, I tried those cymbals in a music stores long time ago and couldn't find anythinkg I didn't like. I absolutely love Meinl, especially the Byzance series; just amazing sound. I have always played Zildjian since the day I started learning drums but Meinl would definetely a change I sould consider. Congratulations on finding the right cymbals for you. Cheers!
with these cymbals so beautiful any changes of company, or that we have good taste. I will attend the Meinl Drum Festival and I will buy a Byzance.

FieroGT808 10 months ago 19
You should have a drum challenging and give your winners your old Paistes you traitor!
FieroGT808 10 months ago

Thanks!
gtrocksyosocks 10 months ago
Isn't that what is great about drumming... Nothing has to sound perfect for anyone but you. There are so many varieties out there from the wood species of your drums to the way you tune them to the cymbals you use. I have always felt that you should go for the sound that you are looking for, not the sound someone else has. Problem for me is that when I realize that one of my cymbals doesn't have the sound I really want it to I have to buy a different one, if I can afford it. Follow your ears

Hey mike, send me your old cymbals! Haha no really, dude you should feel like its christmas every day b/c you are you! You are the shiznit! Love the sound man!
moosedrummer1 10 months ago
I really like the sound these Meinls produce. I'm usually into A customs because of how insanely bright they are but these offer a really nice dark, shimmer effect that takes some of the obnoxious out of cymbals. I think that's a quality Paiste signatures had. These sort have got a jazz vibe to them but are applicable in rock. I also think it's cool you are so responsive to your fans and hopefully that continues; undoubtedly you will continue to see success if you do so.

Mike i know you just cant leave piaste like that, your mind says MEINL,your heart says piaste

Great choice of cymbals there, Mike! I think that 20" extra hammered thin crash (forgot the exact name) will sound even better with a sizzler chain.
If only meinl would make a 22" version of the dark raw bell ride, I would be very happy

What is the sticking/footing pattern for the lick at about 3:20 seconds between your floor toms and kick drum? It sounded realy cool.
possumofdestruction 10 months ago
Your playing is so so sweet. Not to mention your cymbals and drums sound like a peach. The lick you did at 4:02 was killer. Is it by any chance explained somewhere in one of your lesson packages or videos? Cos I'll gladly pay to learn something as cool as that.

Just a suggestion. You should have a link on your youtube page to some kind of picture website where a picture of your drumset is in 3D and all of the drums are labeled so you don't have to keep answering all of these "what size is that symbol?" questions. Everyone who asks about a drum you could just give them a direct link to the site and bam, less work for you...
just a suggestion
shanemeares 10 months ago
I think all the cymbal manufacturers have something to offer but I definitely dig the sound you have going on with this set up. Everything in the video sounds great, however on your page at Meinl where you can click the cymbal and hear it, I don't really like any of them. Maybe the recordings are weird? I don't know. I dig them though!

What does it mean exactly that you are going with a different company? Does it mean that you will not use any other cymbals?
What will you do then with all your old ones? I could really use a some good hand-me-downs. My dad bought me a set this Christmas and it only came with one cymbal. crazy ;)

Keep it up!

Love my Paistes but when I expand my palette will be looking hard at Meinl.
russdonruss 11 months ago
I hate to ask, but do you actually like MEINL cymbals or are you just endorsing them because of the perks? S= No offense.
Galeontanilla 11 months ago
@Galeontanilla: No worries at all my friend. It's a totally valid question and I have no problem giving you an honest answer. I'm lucky enough to be at a level in my career where the "perks" would be the same at all of the big 4 cymbal companies. This decision has been in the works for almost 2 years and it was very difficult. But when I saw Chris Coleman play at NAMM... his cymbals sounded like what I have always dreamed about. Then the decision became very easy for me. It was ALL about sound.
drumteacher76 11 months ago 17

With the electronics in the back this is just amazing.

mysweetnothing 11 months ago
@mysweetnothing I think it's probably your speakers bro, because Mike's vids, especially since he moved to his new studio, have some of the best sound quality on YouTube, and though I'm not sure of his exact mic setup I'm quite sure it is stellar.
LSweener012 11 months ago
@LSweener012 No it's not.Their better compared to other youtube videos but most youtube videos aren't great at all. And it's not really 'stellar' he uses Shure pg series mics which are budget. It seems a waste to have such nice gear and not hear it in it's true glory. Why talk about what heads he uses when what we hear is probably not what he hears. The only difference I hear in his new place is the hd audio is slightly better than before.
mysweetnothing 8 months ago
@mysweetnothing Way to be a super pessimist. Please let me know of drum vids with better sound quality on youtube, I am interested in checking them out., thanks. Also, of course what we hear is not what he hears, it is a recording and is therefore not what he hears while playing.
