  • His german is not good,but what a voice!!!Bravo!This is a Hero!!!!

  • This is an excellent rendition of MDM. I am surprised. Fortunately I don't perceive any resemblance with Domingo's rendition at all. MDM shows a huge differenciated dynamic range and fascinating impressive high tones.

  • Superb. Who cares if his German isn't idiomatic and his style Italian? Wagner himself liked singers who used Italianate sound. His unique tone, caressing phrasing, much of it sung mezza voce, is irresistible. We would be on our knees praying for the privilege of seeing and hearing such an immense artist today!

  • Superbe. Super. so soll es sein.

  • @VivaRenat. Comparalos y no veras grandes diferencias, chata¡.

  • Forever Mario. The greatest!!!

  • Merci Onegine !

  • Hör och njut!

  • This is fantastic..! I wish he would have sung much more Wagner.. I love his Italianate sound in this rep. And he seems to enjoy it...!

  • Along with his recording of Fanciulla, this is the best I've heard him sound. A formidable voice and would have a fabulous Wagnerian as the tessitura suited his voice well.

    Liebe Gruesse

    Frankie

  • Wagner brought out the best of his voice! unbelievable, powerful, but sensitive, no yelling like often in his italian roles, very surprising!

    BRAVO!!

  • The overall reactions are even more interesting than the video. This might be the closest Del Monaco got to real singing in his entire career, making some non-admirers admire the recording, while a number of die-hard fans are considering it a moment of disappointment!!

  • @RoyKa2010 yes, you are right! It is funny, here he had the chance to scream everything out he want.

And.... what happen?, he sings it like Domingo.. oh my G_D, very funny indeed.

    Even I sing it louder!

Bravooooo!!!!!!

  • This must stand as one of the finest interpretations of this "aria" and the only one that can be compared to that of the great Set Svanholm.

  • Celà ne lui va pas mal!Mais tout juste...

  • @abracadabranque

  • He should have been a Wagner singer. Frankly I can't stand his awful shouting in Italian opera, but this is by far the best Del Monaco yet. So he COULD sing without yelling, why didn't he more often? One could cry when hearing him in this. Albanese said once that it wasn't that he wouldn't, but couldn't sing without shouting. But obviously this isn't true. What a waste. And yet what lame applauds after this truly beautiful singing, compared to the furor he made when he screamed!

  • @zgopify I do not agree with you here! MDM was one of the best singers ever put his feeds on this world. If somebody used the word"yelling" then this person dosen't know anything about a dramatic role.If a Tenor would start to yell, he is tired after only 10 minutes. You cannot excercise this!MDM does here in Lohengrin not his best.Probably he was thougt fo this by a german teacher. He sings here almost like a lyrical tenor and far away from his abiblities, with the correct power, like e.g.L.Melchior

  • @zgopify You are right! I honestly never thought I'd like anything from MDM ever. But this is very good! A nice controlled vocal projection, nothing like the Del Monaco w hear in the Italian rep. Looks like the German coldness and discipline has done him a lot of good here ;-)

  • @zgopify Even though Del Monaco sings with nuance and caresses the music, his tecnique made it very difficult to do this on a steadybasis. He does have a great Forza where he does sing piano and employs mezza voce.He also has a terrific Cielo E Mar O Paradiso an early Ballo,The flower song,But for the most part he did sing loud. If he were SHOUTING, He would not have lasted as long as he did.Miss Albanese was a fine artist but she did not have the abilityto sing Forte like a Tebaldi for instance

  • This aria has to make an impact, and MDM certainly delivers! I agree that his diction here is also fabulous. The whole thing is kinda loud and straight forward, but that was his style and it certainly works.

  • we would be on our knees to hear a voice like this singing Wagner now. I think my Teacher, Norman Bailey would agree and he is still a formidable Wagnerian singer!

  • @rjhibberd... don't worry, the waiting time is soon over....

  • @rjhibberd the reason why such tenors are so rare are the teachers!

  • @rjhibberd

I prefer a more "heroic tenor" timbre like Peter Seiffert (20 year old recording) - this one's too baritoney for my taste ;)

  • ? Klaus who? James King, Jon Vickers perhaps?

  • Gefällt mir besser als die Domingofassung.

  • @vocede Stimmt!

  • It makes me smile to hear Del Monaco in this rep. I personally prefer the more italian sounding dramatic tenor in this role but both are really lovely. Thank you so much for letting us hear something this wonderful.

  • I was proud of my Del Monaco to sing this most German of all arias (except for the rest of Wagner) and do so well, and really I did not expect the near perfect diction, although I was prepared for passion, which Del Monaco never lacked.

  • one of the great tenors, this posting is much better than the other on youtube . I could listen to MDM and Corelli all day with their huge voices, Enjoy this as much as you can

  • This is the first time I hear del Monaco sing Wagner. He has hardly any accent - really great. Italians normally have a heavy accent when speaking German. This is a really excellent performance also from a linguistic point of view.

  • a shame that he did not more wagner...

MDM did know German...there is an interview with him in Youtube, by german television with Aneliese Rotembergher...very interesting

  • True, but it's sort of the only 5 Minutes in his life where he DIDN'T have a strong accent. Check out his other In fernem Land or Winterstürme, that's hardly German.

  • simply great... the only pity is that no complete Lohengrin from MDM arrived on tape....

  • Sir Tomiszlav,this men was a true complete symphony...his voice,his body,his acting...harmony and fury!!I love him!

    ankhsnammon

    Thank you very much onegin

  • Mario del Monaco has just the right temperament for Wagner, especially Lohengrin. Thank you.
