I thought that there was more of a grappling aspect to this form of martial arts and that the striking was more inline and not so sweeping. Do they use this in MMA or dose it become a little ineffective when you don’t have a gi or clothing to grab?
thats what I love about hapkido. it is pretty complete. we have both TKD kicking and aikido grabing, and a lot of other influences to. we can fight well at long, mid and close range and in the soil. of course no martial art is perfect, but hapkido has a bit of everything, and thats why it is very good and effective.

If you guys want to do more acrobatic kicks, first of all, learn how to control your posture, all the acrobatic kicks you guys are doing are just flying all over the place. It looks messy. Learn some gymnastics and speak to some wushu masters.

Ok, the atheletism is fantastic guys, but don't try to copy the kicks they do in Wushu, ie, butterfly kicks, butterlfy twist, tornado kicks are done with body upright, not leaning downwards. Also, don't try to do a split landing after the butterfly twist with head looking down, it's just doesn't look neat and make sure do a better split.
HAHAHHAHA so wat ur saying is....nobodies allowed to do those kicks/tricks unless they're in Wushu? ur a dumb fuck, try checking up "urban ninjas" they do it all the time. im pretty sure there are a lot of non-wushu people who do the butterfly kick/twist. Also they are not doing tornado kicks, its called a "540 kick" and 540 kicks are easier done wen the body is leaning downwards.
wow your such a dumbass. so your basicaly saying that you can only do moves like those if your in wushu? wow, so i guess you can only punch if your leaning boxing?
That's crazy, because my wushu teacher (the granddaughter of wang ziping) has told us it isn't extremely important to do any of the things you've said.
ur a dick man.... those technique exist in korea for ages too... martial art is martial art... u better should blame kickboxers and UF pratcicer who , them , stole and try (only) to copy all techs from all martial arts...
You guys obviously work pretty hard. Id work on the accuracy and landings of the acrobatic kicks. Other than that I liked the joint locks and wanted to see more in the video. Overall its a good vid. Nice

You're missing the point, bghammer11. The point is to learn to do the joint locks effectively, with power and speed. But the only way you can practice them like that is if the defender learns to fall or flip himself to protect his joints. So both parties must learn locks and falls in order to practice.
i am well aware of what has to be taught and learned in hapkido i was taught the traditional yool sul hapkido by master wahid halimee who in turn was taught by the recently deceased master park from the origional teachings there is no necessity to flip it gives students unrealistic expectations what to expect from a technique who created these kicks for hapkido?
yong sul hapkido instructor the flip is not necessary it is far more important to learn how to move with your partner than to fly through the air like paper and i have never seen a yellow belt hapkido student perform either a butterfly kick or a 570 kick (yong sul is the original traditional hapkido style)
If you are an instructor then you should realise that students come from other martial arts backgrounds and therefore can be capable of these kicks - yellow belt or not!!!!!!!!!!!!
i agree. the person falling needs to learn to fall the way he would really fall if someone did that technique to him....on the street or on pavement, that flip would build up way too much momentum, and you'd likely break some of your own bones.
That is so true...If you don't flip and do a break fall you will hurt yourself. If you are "on the street" the arm will be broken before the attacker hits the ground.
i agree that is what the technique was designed to do. but i've also done this to people and had them go down in a myriad of different ways. and none of them ever did a flip. i understand it is just how you breakall.
maybe that wasn't an actual display thing.... that kid coulda just walked up to the one sitting down and told him he sucked so the kid sitting in the chair taught the bitch a lesson and it was caught on film.
Welllll.... If i could spin kick like THAT, and i was like, getting jumped by like, 5 muscular black guys in a dark alley on a friday night.... I wouldn't do anything except spin kick like that hoping i scare them away or something :) lol
you need to spar to get the feel for a resisting opponent. Otherwise you can't actually learn the techniques. A class room scenario where the guy lets you do the technique teaches you nothing.
hapkido would be a great system if they could take out all the spinning kicks and make the striking a little more realistic. The best Hapkido striking is learned in the early belts because the spining shit doens't work.
omg, if i could spar every single day of my life, i'd be in eternal nirvana... <:) i'm only a green belt in hapkido, but my favorite thing to do in it is spar, and the pride of knowing, i just owned a guy twice my size because i caught his kick and threw him... (sigh)
learning martial arts is not about 'you are good in fighting' but it is more to defend your self and apply the techniques that you've learned when necessary. don't tell me you get your ass in trouble everyday yakboy, that you need to sparr everyday? no offence actually, just i believe in traditional values in martial arts.
yes, there is so many different hapkido styles, but... looks very modernized.. so acrobatic and artistic..... and i don't see any sparring..... i prefer the traditional style whit blocks, and weapons, and all the kicks and poomses, and of course.... whit sparring.... but yes... there is so many different styles of hapkido...
There's many different styles of hapkido. Ours is dukmoo, and our speciality is acrobatic kicks and weapons. A common misconception is that hapkido does not teach advanced kicking, but most do.
