oh, and if your gonna be a finger picker, you must learn to seperate your index finger from your thumb. Play the bass line with your thumb. The mid range with your index finger and you highs with middle and ring fingers. A finger picker must think like a drummer (bass kick, snare, high hats). I know its gonna be hard to seperate your fingers, but just practice it slowly. When you get better, you'll do it naturally anyways, just wanted you to be aware of it.
hopefully soon I'll get a new camcorder and I'll be able to make some video for you to check out. You'll probably like my videos since we like the same type of music.
It's awesome to see you taking on the challenge of finger picking. To me there's nothing like being able to make the guitar sound like a piano. If you ever have any questions about a technique or anything about the guitar, please ask. All my friends say I'm an awesome teacher!! And we're all the same age as you, so adults can learn! When I first started, I tried getting lessons, but it's the hardest thing to find a dedicated finger picker to teach it. So don't be afraid to ask! Good luck!
always a pleasure to meet a fellow finger picker, since we are a rare and dying breed! About lessons...I say you don't need them, you just need some direction. I'm self taught myself, too. First off, palm muting just means to mute the strings with your bottom palm of your finger picking hand, to stop the sound. In actually, there is no wrong way of doing it, so just practice stopping the sound of the strings at first.
Later on after you start getting used to doing that, practice it in the rhythm. When you hear a note being shorten in the beat, it was palm muted. You'll start the hear when you use it natural, after you get familiar with the sound it creates. And soon after, you'll be palm muting after almost every note. Then you'll get into more advance palm muting where you're damping the sound, instead of completely turning it off. But that's for later, after you get the basics down.
I posted a comment by it didn't post, so here's another one. You got way better, I can tell you are dedicated to your guitar and singing. You are doing great in changing your chords on time and strumming your guitar. Now to make the guitar sound cleaner, you must learn the art of palm muting. Palm muting is about 75% of great guitar playing, so it's a skill that you must have. Basically you touch the strings with the palm of your hand, right after you strum the string, to stop the sound.
It's like an on and off switch, you turn the sound on when you strum it, then you turn it off when you palm mute. This is also a must have when you really wanna get a rhythm dead on right. Practice this, it's the key to sounding good. Look up lessons here on youtube, there are plenty of them. I don't play the guitar with a flat pick, I'm a straight finger picker, so the technique is a little different. Good luck to ya!! And keep it up the practicing, you are doing great!
Cool! Thanks for the tips. I haven't had lessons or anything but I definitely want some. I've heard of palm muting and seen people do it but can't figure out in my own songs where they would fit in. I don't use a pick either and most people tell me that I need to start getting comfortable with one but I feel much more comfortable just picking with my fingers. Thanks for checking out my songs and for the advice!
