ridiculous sensitivity indeed... YOU kick ass and I'm in love with this Oriental wavedrum from the 1st listen and feel...Got one yesterday! will be using it on the Senza Peso short hands down... pun intended
He says it added 50 kits, does it also have the library of the standard Wavedrum then? I'm looking to getting one of them but it all depends on the collection, I plan on doing a large number of styles.
Why not give it a body so you can play it like a darbuka? Playing hands down like this is crap technique and no one does it. Cool idea but still needs work.
As has been noted, the output isn't overly "hot" - there is a "boost" mode that can be enabled, but it can also result in distortion. However, a preamp would fix that up - it is a limitation.
I have heard that people are not happy with the velocity switching - I assume they mean the detection levels, which are tweakable. It's very sensitive, and can pick up very slight touches. All in all, the closest thing to a real, organic drum you'll find in electronics. I also have a Handsonic HPD-10.
I have a wavedrum, i'm unimpressed with the velocity switching, there is not enough levels to have the realism that is associated with a real drum, for instance the djembe just feels fake to me. The algorithms are the nice part of the wavedrum, and there are some nice instruments but in terms of realism this is not going to replace a real djembe, just so you are not dissapointed when you get one of these. Maybe this update is better but I would try it in the store for yourself before buying
I still can't believe there isn't some kind of USB! I also wonder what has changed under the surface. HAs the low output been addressed better then it was in the original, he mentions sensitivity are there more mics and sensors? How much more advanced is this one or is it just the new algorithms and loops? I still can't get worked up they came out with this because the One I bought last year is still a great instrument and crazy cool pice of gear!
@JohnBertotti OUTPUT ISSUES: The Wavedrum has two selectable output levels, Normal Mode and x2 Mode. If you hold down the BANK button during power-up, the display will read "Set" and then either "1.00" or "2.00" You can then turn the value knob to select between the two output levels. "2.00" will be the louder output.
IMPORTANT: You then need to save your selected setting by holding the BANK button and then the WRITE button. Turn the power off and then on again. Voila!
@JohnBertotti SENSITIVITY: The sensors (transducers) are the same on the Oriental as on previous versions of the Wavedrum. The added sensitivity is in the nine new algorithms. Within these algorithms, "sensitivity" is one of the adjustable parameters. These are accessible in Edit 2 Mode. The factory default setting for sensitivity on these new programs is 90 (from a range of 00...100).
@gbrhythm hey! Thanks for the repy!I did turn the out put up on mine ut it still is't exceptionally loud. I try it through my powered monitors, krk rokit 5, and it works but I wish it were a bit louder. I do love this thing!
@gbrhythm I don't have a drum set and was going to start building a kit but I think I am going to add this oriental then pick up a good solid kick and mount the two WD's on it with a small 10 inch sare we have and a hit hat. Like you said voila! instanst kit with one hell of a lot of versatility!
I have the original wave drum and it is an incredible piece of gear. Yes the new one has 9 more algorithms and that is a bit irritating but the rest is just extra memory. I wish there was a way to update firm ware to include the new algorithms with those you could program in your favorite new sounds the way they are in the oriental. I would like to see some of the programming for the new sounds to see what I could add on my own with the 36 algorithms I have.
Thank you for the clarification. I am very unhappy now. I bought the black one, it will reach me in 20 days overseas and its obsolete now because there is no possibility to upgrade.
The fact that Oriental is now available in the store in my neighborhood does not help either.
This is from Korg's site: "Wavedrum Black Limited Edition. Featuring an unmistakably premium look, the Wavedrum Black is finished with a solid black metallic rim and an exclusive BLACK SUEDE™ Remo drum head."
So Korg is playing with words here and the real difference is just.....color? It's black and is this all the fuss about "Limited Edition" flaunt? If so then I would concur. Korg is definitely limited.
@oncosperma The Wavedrum Black is identical to the previous version in silver/gray in terms of design, sounds, etc. The ONLY difference between the two is color. One can only surmise that the black ones will be "limited" only in terms of how many are manufactured.
The new "Oriental" version is distinguished by the Red/White design but the REAL difference is that the Oriental includes 50 new sound programs and 40 new loops in ADDITION to all of the programs and loops included with the other two.

I just bought a WD BLACK, and I will get it next month, and now an unexpected ORIENTAL is on sale :( With more sounds and loops ...
However Black has Remo head and metal rim, I think Oriental has plastic rim as the original one. Can anybody confirm this?
oncosperma 1 year ago
@oncosperma
No, all three Wavedrums have aluminum rims--last year's silver/gray, the new black, and the Oriental.
They all ship with Remo drumheads
