  • the stuff they play today ain't country!!! left was great, give me Lefty, Hank, kitty well you get the idea

  • Edging on toward bluegrass in the chorus harmonies. This is good.

  • And what a great piece of songwriting! Grabs your attention like little on today's "country" - but if I remember right it didn't even crack the Top Ten when it first came out.

  • Fabulous stuff, with Lefty in prime form - so simple here to see why Haggard idolized him. Who are the nine strange, sorry SOBs who don't like this video?

  • Country music today will never be back to this, country music, it's gone in a whole new direction, compared with this great country music. I just hope they have a way to save this old time country music, in black and white, before it's gone forever. Like remastered versions, just thankfully we have youtube, so we can enjoy these great old time country music.

  • old time country....today's country music is for people who don't like country

  • Never heard Lefty live. Sounds great!!!

  • a mistake on my part, 50's, i knew better than that. thanks for bringin that to my attention, richard.

  • I was informed that my grandpa played with Left and started in Hagerman NM. How i wished there were some video!...My granpa has been gone for 15 years and that would just keep his memory alive for me as he taught me all the music i know...was one of the best banjo, guitar and fiddle players around.

  • Lefty Maybe the best male country singer ever!!

  • and thats what it is, lothbe, mess. bad rock and roll is what i call it.

  • this is real true country music it is not the mess that they play on the radio today and call country music

  • There is no better music than old style country, a lot of heart and feeling in those days!

  • a pal of mine back in the 80's played fiddle for ole lefty. he was r.l. stewart from wichita falls, texas. r.l. was with him way back when.

  • Was this before the infamous Lefty Frizzel Gibson J200 or did he just not have it on hand during this taping?

  • These new so called country singers aint worthy to shine this mans boots,God Bless Lefty,if these new "country singers" were singing for shit, they couldnt get a smell of it!!Hell, they all sound alike now days.dont get no better than this!!!

  • Fuck yeah!

  • Please tell me, Is lead guitarist Nokie Edwards ?

  • SHouldn't Lefty be playing with his left hand?

  • damm, i can tell im getting old

  • The guy singing the backing look and sing amazingly like Buck Owens...beautiful.

  • @frankipoux the back up with the fiddle is Abe Mulkey

  • @frankipoux i had to watch it a few of times over cuz backup vocalist does sound ( and look) like Buck Owens.. i thought it was him at first

  • Lefty got started singing for beer @ a beer joint in EL Dorado.Arkansas

  • I met Lefty, Freddy Hart and Bill Anderson at La Popular furniture in Los Angeles in 1958. Bill was about 19 years old. He looked like a kid with a scarf tied around his neck. Lefty was very affable and talkative, then just before showtime he said "you boys run along now." He went out to his Cadillac for nip of courage and put on the best country show I have ever seen. I will never forget it!

  • This must be from the porter wagoner show. Great music (Great harmony singing fro your grampa too!)

  • Ripper song. Glenn Campbell did a good version. But Australia's Adam Harvey really takes the gold medal.

  • The real thing.

  • is that chet atkins on guitar?

  • @harborsparrow

The lead guitar is Buck Trent. He played guitar and electric banjo in Porter Waggoner's band for many years and then was a regular on Hee Haw.

  • Great music

  • Wow. Excellent. This tune really swings. Listen to the band. Lefty and Abe are great.

  • @islandguitar how do you know of abe not many people bring up my grandfather.

  • That guy is smiling at YOU!!!! (not me)

  • i just love this stuff! let's not forget the contributions of the supporting musicians who added such country flavor with their voices and instrumental talent:) classic country is definitely a "NO AUTO TUNE ZONE!"

  • Lefty was really great!!

  • how many of us love this ole stile country more than this pop?

  • me!

  • i do :)

  • I do! I wish they would bring back this GOOD music!

  • Thanks for this! Glad to be able to watch and listen to authentic country music still

  • they don"t make it like that anymore lefty is a bad ass

  • who is that guy sing with Lefty?..damn he got a good voice.....

  • the great abe mulkey singing with lefty. great songwriter and harmony singer

  • love that old country music. What a great legend we all had in Lefty. Thanks for the post.

  • @Len44M the people like lefty, hank williams and johnny cash made country music what it is today

  • Okay, I was back for my daily guitar lesson when attempting to hit the play button, I accidentally voted this video two stars. It deserves five. Lefty was da heat. I especially liked Nigel Tufnel on lead guitar. Great song. One of Lefty's best.

  • Glen Campbell did a great cover of this years later. A classic!

  • That would be Abe Mulkey on Harmonies, Buck Trent on Guitar, and Mack Magaha on Fiddle.

  • COUNTRY-LOVER'S QUIZ!

What 3 classic country songs were covered by Van Halen?

Hint: these songs were by Lefty Frizzell and Bob Wills.

No, this is not a joke. Van Halen covered Lefty Frizzell and Bob Wills! Really! (One was even a huge hit.)

  • Who is that singing backup? Is it someone in Lefty's band or the Porter Wagner studio band, or is it Jim Neighbors?

  • Comment removed

  • buck owens?

  • no this is william oliver frizzell

  • I was talking about the backup singer...but someone else is saying it's abe mulkey (?). anyway...it looks and sounds like buck owens...but that was an uneducated guess. The album's discography does list abe mulkey as singing backup vocals...but I don't know what he looks like and didn't necessarily think this was him on some television program. nevertheless...great song, even if the guitar player is a bit off putting. ha.

  • @McTony0 His name is Abe Mulkey. one of the greatest men i ever knew!

  • No wonder this was the"Hags" hero!

  • What year was this recorded? What program was this on? Thanks!

  • Very early sixties on Porter Wagoner Show

  • What a country music legend. He was one of the true greats.

  • not if I have anything to do with it! YOU WERE AWESOME LEFTY!

  • MONEY and the lawyers that be and google sleeping with youtube and those lawyers have completely ruined the whole concept of music being an art. I dream some day of ASCAP and BMI

and WMG offices turning into nothing more then a mushroom cloud of smoke. Till then Music like this will never survive and worse to those fascist morons on music row music can never again be an art.

  • i am honored to be blessed by the frizzell name this is allen side

  • Did Lefty Frizzell have a brother? And did he sing too? Has anyone heard of Peewee Adams who was a country western drummer?

  • David Frizzell had a few hits in the 80s one was a duet with Dottie West I believe

  • @BritanyaVonHex Yes, his name is David. For more information, see b1viih75's comment below.

  • WE ALL MISS YOU LEFTY

  • Sadly, I don't think they will ever bring back REAL country to the mainstream.

  • Great!

This music helped me play the guitar!

  • Buck Trent back there on guitar.

  • the one satanding in the background is my grandfather ABE MULKEY! God rest his soul. I miss you

  • I found a couple of photos of Abe Mulkey on the website of Crockett Frizell . Check it out!

  • I ment Frizzell .

  • @violet8218

this song has been running through my head all day

    wado for posting

  • @violet8218

The guy singing the backing vocals? Fabulous!...

  • @violet8218 The musician playing the fiddle?

  • @RasMajnouni Mac McGahey,.PLayed w/Porter Wagoner for years.I remember playing one of the shows at Opryland w/him when I first moved to Nashville and was just starting to do sessions.Real nice guy!!

  • @violet8218 amen he had an amazing voice

  • @violet8218 I'm very sorry to learn of his passing. Abe taught me about harmony when he spent a Summer in Idabel Ok. I was learning to play bass with his Brother Doug and Doug's Bro-In-Law, Pat Williams. He was as good a singer as Lefty, who I played with on tour in Hawaii in 1962. He told me Abe had gone back to Oklahoma and I looked for him but never found him again. John The Bassist.

  • @lektrikbass i always enjoy hearing stories from people who knew my grand father. he lived in idabel for a few yrs when i was a teenager. i lived with then in 1996 for half a school year. that following Jan is when they moved to WA.

  • Great music, Lefty is the one many later singers emulated. He started singing on KELD AM in El Dorado Arkansas when he was about 12 years old. KELD is still in business and I wish Lefty was still here to sing again!

  • Lefty is where Merle Haggard got his style

  • Lefty's 1963 Cadillac is on Ebay right now!

  • weird thing is Lefty is my great uncle on my moms side but im still not a huge fan of country but i wish i could have met him cause music is my passion too

  • Lefty's brand of country is true country...roots. Without the roots, the tree can't survive! Lefty was truly one of the giants of country music and you'd do well to explore everything from 1952 back.

  • God bless you Sir ~

The closest I've to music is my Mum; a Wagnerian opera singer under Stokowski.

Do you think she knew Lefty?

    I do, and ta,

    ~~""

  • real good country

  • Check out the Roan Mountain Hilltoppers. The guy on the banjo is my great grandfather. His name was Creede Birchfield. If than ain't country, I'll kiss you a _ _ . lol

  • What a great song by Lefty.

  • so i just found out that my great grandma was married to him for a while. crazy stuff.

  • Wow, what a young Buck Trent on the electric guitar!

  • Amen.... Bring back REAL country Music !!! :-)

  • You can't have real country music without real country people. And that, my friend is a breed that has all but died out.

  • CADMIUM

I can skin a buck. I can run a trot line. We will survive.

  • Love this

  • That was really good.

Are they touring in my chicago neighborhood?

  • They have some good Country on WHPK 88.5 at the University of Chicago. Looking at your name, you have to be within the boundaries of WHPK's transmission. 90.9 from DuPage College has a bigger signal and you can hear some good things from them on weeknights. There's always AM 650 - far as I'm concerned it's the only country station in Chicago, though it transmits from Nashville.

  • I listen to Lefty alot. My dad got me into classic country. I hated it when I was little. I love it now. I guess tastes change.

  • i love this song

  • We do this in jam sessions all the time.

The tenor is Abe Mulkey, probably one of the greatest I ever heard.

We do carry this music forth, unto eternity.

    Come join us.

GOT TIME TO BREATHE: GOT TIME FOR MUSIC...........................BRISCOE DARLIN'

  • funny my last name is Frizzell =)

  • Magnificent :D

  • this is way better than the new Robert Plant/ Alison Krause song!!

  • Buck Trent was a GENIUS...ever listen to the intro to some of the Porter an Dolly songs that sounds like PEDAL STEEL?...It is Buck with his ELECTRIC BANJO AND SCRUGGS TUNERS...He could make it sound like a pedal steel...STILL CAN!..

  • This is so great. I love how happy they are when singing about loss and depression, regret.

  • Nothing sounds better than Old Countrysongs, please go on posting them ,

    Greetings, Jean.

  • Does anyone know who the harmony singer is?

  • Lefty is still great and many singers of today are standing on his shoulders. Go Lefty

  • Hes related to me hes my grandmas cousin :) Go LEFTY I wish i could have met him

  • was that buck

  • My guess is that the lead player is a very young Buck Trent who went on to become a fabulous banjo player and regular on Hee Haw with Buck Owens and Roy Clark. I am puzzled that the tone and sound track of the lead guitar does not match with his hollow body guitar. He may have gotten a camera shot but is not the actual lead player.

  • Not to mention all his great pickin' with Porter Wagoner. His intro to "Carroll County Accident" is a classic. I can't verify that it's Buck playing guitar on this, but it sure sounds like something he'd play!

  • Yeah, he looks like Buck Trent!

  • is that don rich on the lead guitar?

  • this is seriously cool.

  • When it comes to real country music, Lefty was (and still is) the real deal. His passing left a gap that no one has ever been able to fill.

  • Hell yes! God Bless Lefty!

  • This what I call country music. Thanks for posting.

    Dianne

  • absolutely fantastic music. We need that sound back in today's music.

  • this is the sound of the voice of God calling young Johnny out into the world to become an American man

  • Lefty Frizzell Rules all

  • Fantastic. Utterly Fantastic.
