  • Great job!

  • Excellent! I make movies for a living and you did a great job. Yes!

Prep and painting of my 81 Westy is my next project and your tips were very helpful, especially the filter for the compressor to keep the water out. Have done a lot of body work before so that's something I understand, but buying the right paint, reducers, hardners, etc., is a complete mystery. Got one of those purple-colored harbor freight HVLP spray guns. Is that acceptable? Beer works as well as "7", right?

  • @johnt17724 Make sure the gun you buy matches the PSI of the paint. The manufacturer will have that info for their paints. Be sure you have a compressor that can not only create enough pressure but continue to deliver that pressure while painting. Mine could not.

  • @johnt17724 Oh, and you can use beer but it takes longer. ;)

  • nice work....i love the solvents comment

  • Looks good. One Day Paint and Body gave a quote of 850 wholesale when I filmed a Westy they were sanding. I went back to film the aftermath and couldn't upload the video. Their lawyers might sue me. It looked painted with a roller.

  • did you have any problems with dust?

  • @Thevinylhouse

Are you kidding? hahahaha The whole passenger side feels like sandpaper. I just started sanding and buffing and will have all that out soon. I'll be filming that too. All the dust particles and orange peel will be gone. I just ordered a better buffer so I am waiting on that to arrive. Stay tuned for part III where I clean up all my mistakes.

  • @uprightbassghost Awesome, i cant wait to see it!

  • had my westy done at maaco for $650 and it came out great----sanded, primed and sealed and 9 quarts of paint --they did a great job---it was a half price sale---this is the maaco in melbourne fla.

  • That is quite often a route allot of Vanagon owners take and I have heard good and bad stories. I was thinking of doing what allot had done and do all the prep work, tape, etc. and let Maaco shoot it. That usually comes out the best. The problem is my local Maaco quoted $1,000 just to shoot it. Soooo, that was out of the question. Had they done the entire thing for $650, I may have considered it but I'm pretty happy with the job I did and will be buffing it out as soon.

  • nicely done bryan, thanks!
