  • This was more of a Hot Tuna record at this point....Jorma & Jack were nice enough to Call It Jefferson Airplane.

  • come on and join us, on the other side of the sun

  • Have u?

  • yes i have the flying saucers, they're flyin' around me man!

  • One guy had an aneurysm from euphoria while listening to this song.

  • me and my pet mountain lion seen the saucers last night and he's got pink eye now!

  • This was an unexpected joy from the Airplane live. Plus the Flying Toasters sort of symbolize the end of an era.

  • this is my favorite song by them haha

  • Not the only band to blend the electric guitar with the electric fiddle, a great job by 'It's a Beautiful Day' live at Carnegie Hall about this same time, also great guitar in that song 'White Bird'.

    Gads I love this introduction!

  • 2400 Fulton St........was "The Airplane House". still there 2day. But back then it was painted Black and had banners outside at times with symbols welcoming the saucers

  • I just pooped to this song... And it was amazing.

  • Freedom is located in your mind...:-)

  • Start this song, turn on repeat1. Enjoy.

  • seriously fatty rock

  • For a band filled with members who could barely stand each other(at this time), this is as tight as it gets. I can listen to the segment from 2:32 to 3:10 over and over and over and.........

One item that does not seem to be acknowledged as often as it should: how many bands can anyone name with 4 major songwriters.

    4!

  • @neocritic422 Off the top of my head? Queen. All 4 had a major hit.

  • @neocritic422 not many csny was probably the most prolific

  • Awesome album cover and song.

  • Thanks for uploading this gem, as this is perhaps one of the very few all-time best live albums ever released by anyone, recorded when they were on tour for their "Long John Silver" studio release, another albeit downpalyed treasure of theirs. I saw them just a year later. They pretty much were doing the 1st incarnation of Starship, you Gno, "Blows Against the Empire" material. Kansas opened. Keep the faith. It won't be this horribly corporate a world for much longer. Namasté ~ (•8-D

  • @Clematisian I'm sorry you had to see Kansas. . . . I'm afraid that if it won't be a "horribly corporate world for much longer" it'll only be because will be forced to memorize the Koran.

  • what does saucers mean????

  • @keo774 ....flying saucers...UFO's

  • If nothing else it is one of the great album covers of ALL TIME!!!

  • @npspec34 Admittedly Berkeley Systems ripped it off for the Flying Toaster screen saver. Airplane still lost that battle.

  • saw the airplane many times with the dead and quicksilver and santana.they took turns headlining nobody cared we came to see them all.played at winterland hence the title of the album.was a great time for music.I moved out here from Boston just because of the music.I'm still here

  • running linux and u-toob isn't allowing my comments but the airplane were stellar live, in fact the best along with the dead, saw them both fillmore east, 1968? warp has ensued...

  • Yes, I saw the saucer.

  • bloody toasters with wings flying through the clouds haha

as if it was a common occurance in 1969 or whenever it was. awesome band, sensational tune.

i often wish i was grace n pauls kid haha.

  • I'm so jealous of the people who were alive to actually see bands such as these live. It also gives me goose bumps.

  • This song could just as easily been written by someone in the band Muse or Chevelle. But it came from the past. Look for the lyrics and read the words.

    "first-born atomic generation

open the door, don't you know that's what it's for"

  • I saw them back in 66 or 67 at the Roundhouse in London, with the Doors, Terry Reid, etc. Sat on the floor with everybody else throughout the night, 2 sets each by the Airplane and Doors. The Doors were amazing but the Airplane were even better.

  • @rhodatutube Just curious, who headlined?

  • God I wish I had the chance to see them!

    Gotta build a time machine

  • Best version!!!!

  • I saw this show when they were at Radio City in NYC. I also loved Papa John when he played with Hot Tuna and saw them many times before he left us, I think that may have been at the Academy of Music.

  • Jefferson Airplane At It's Best!

  • Goose bumps all the way!

  • That was so great to hear a live version of this fantastic song.

  • Best San Francisco band ever. Their sound is just unreal.

  • 30+ years ago, after hearing the harmonic perfection on Grace, Paul and the guitars I decided that one day I too would dive into the world of such perfect balance. Now as I approach the end of my life I have finally started to live my dream.

I spent my life working for a living when I should have been learning to fly.

  • this is a great album

  • Far out .Thx !

  • Where is the Effing Mothership ! Puny Puny Earthlings......

  • It got here years ago! More and more people have been getting on board...

  • ...the saucers were always around when the Airplane tripped you out!

  • There hasn't been another like Papa John Creech

  • Sad the Papa John died before more solo recognition.

    T'was the era.

  • Toasters!? Were the Airplanes really Cylons afterall?

  • ....No I have'nt seen the sausers...but something tells me were gonna..maybe that will be the beginning of the end.

  • Yes, the beginning of the end of this kind of life.

Just lets hope they dont think in using us as slaves or something.

  • I fucking love this song.

    This and Ohio by CSNY.

    Awesome.

  • Hahahah!!! I totally agree Christopher :P

    xxx ^-^

  • This wasnt me!

  • The band in its current form finished the show and did one song of the encore, then Grace said something like, "we'd like to bring out an old friend, Marty Balin" The place went Berserk. Marty came out and did 20 minutes with the band. A revolutionary version of Volunteers, You Wear your Dresses to Short, and an Eye to Eye, Nose to Nose duo with Grace of Somebody to Love, probably the best version I ever heard. Suddenly, the issues between Paul and Marty became very clear.

  • Sure enough, Marty was hanging backstage, behind some big speakers.

Th band was stunned, the crowd went wild, chanting "Marty , Marty"

What ensued was 5 to 10 minutes of

Rock Star Soap Opera drama acted out on stage.

Jorma went over and talked to Marty, Jorma went over and talked to Paul, then Jorma talked to Grace, and Grace talked to Paul while Jorma talked more to Marty and again with Paul. All the while the crowd chanting "Marty". Grace came to mic and said, "This will be our last song".

  • this album was recorded from two shows, Chicago Auditorium and Winterland in San Francisco.

I was at the SF show, siting in the back Balcony with a great view of the entire stage.

It was the Airplane's first show in their Home of SF in about two years, and their first since Marty left.

Also their first with drummer Barbatta.

Towards the end of this Great concert, at a quiet moment between songs, shouts, pointing backstage "There's Marty!"

  • great, trying to find this.

  • My favorite version of this song. Kantner's ascending chords at the end with the feedback is pure mystical JA.

Yes, and I was at this concert also. Don't remember much so I must have been. ;-)

  • Awesome. Thanks so much for posting it.

    RG

  • anyone tried listening to this song while on lsd?

    it ruuules

  • the guitar is dull and typical. even for its time.

  • their best song alongside Lather in my opinion.

  • Great song ! Thx

  • My teacher brought this on vinyl to school today, he also brough Led Zeppelin One, just doin' our part to educated musically retarded people of my sad generation : )

  • your teacher is a fucking legend

  • I haven't seen the saucers.....but they've seen me!! aaaaarrrrghh!!

  • This is this band at it's "Pinnacle" ! The "heights" of the airplane ride, pre- starship. The "haunting" guitar licks with a touch of Papa John's licks. The mixed vocals with Kantner's backgrounds gave it that California sound of the sixties ! Awesome !

Saw these guys at William & Mary Hall 1974. Still one of the best of the many acts from the 60's and 70's I've seen. A JA/HT mix at it's best !

  • I met and fell in love with Leslie Ann Sterling at this show. Hope she is doing well.

    I still miss her.

    Kevin

  • I actually think this version is better than the older, studio version with marty. The complete CD of this tour is actually quite good performance-wise tho the sound is pretty bad.

  • This song it's a Masterpiece.

    Guitar is great.

    Thanks
